It discusses the transformations to central banking brought about by the upheaval of the 20th&amp;nbsp;century, including world wars, economic crises, and social unrest, with the creation of ‘fiat money’ replacing a rigid gold standard, and charts these changes across different country settings including the evolving relationship of central banks to both democratic and authoritarian political systems. The book argues that challenges to central banking come from opposite sides: theories that see the government as the sole creator of currency and deny any autonomy to the central bank, and the emergence of private, unregulated cryptocurrencies, where the concept of money is framed in an anarchic vision of the society. It details the US agricultural education that made an impact on Brazil and how this translated into private capital in the US. The book highlights the shifting priorities of Brazil's regional elites during the First Republic and takes readers through the its downfall in 1930. Chapters cover how US educators implanted the philosophy and practices of US agricultural education at the nation’s three most prominent university-level institutes of agronomist education. The history also documents the activist role played by the United States in the agricultural development of Brazil during an early part of the century, which was before the US was a world leader economically. Earl Richard Downes provides detailed documentation of the creation of the major agricultural education institutions in Brazil and their initial contributions to Brazil’s agricultural development. He also provides insight into the Brazilian federal government reaction to international crises with opportunities for profit through increased production for external markets. The resulting book breaks down the specific social and economic history that led to heightened economic development in a developing nation.&lt;/p&gt;

The difficulties involved in measuring time devoted to housework and other forms of household labour in the past have meant that most attempts to assess the process of industrialisation have failed to recognise the ways in which such labour is essential to the sustainability and welfare of the population. In this context, Japan presents a significant example of a historical case of industrialisation occurring within an economy that continued to be dominated by the institution of the household. This short study argues that this must have led to a particularly significant underestimation of Japanese living standards in the past, with implications for comparative and global analysis, and to neglect of the key role of women in the historical economy. Providing a nuanced yet concise analysis, this book will be valuable reading for scholars of economic history and feminist economics, as well as introducing important comparative angles for researchers in Japanese studies and gender studies more widely.
