A Comparative History of Early Monetary Theories (1358-1918)

Currency and Credit Money

This book undertakes an in-depth exploration of the pivotal role of rice, which is the world's most essential food crops, sustaining over half of the global populace. It meticulously analyzes how rice cultivation constitutes the material bedrock and defining characteristic in the evolution of Asian civilization. Additionally, it scrutinizes rice culture, which holds sway as the traditional mainstream in China and the majority of countries in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. The author, with an extensive background in archaeological research within the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, anchors the specific content of this volume in materials sourced from this region. The book then proceeds to engage in a comprehensive inquiry into the fundamental question of the origin of rice cultivation, drawing on archaeological evidence, historical records, and interdisciplinary perspectives to offer a nuanced understanding of this significant aspect of human history. The book is divided into six chapters, which describe and analyze the origin, evolution and development of rice farming in the world and focus on the rich and diverse cultural styles and diversity characteristics of rice cultivation civilization in various parts of Asia due to geographical location and regional environmental differences.

Ancient temples, haunted bridges, and spectral women—discover 87 supernatural tales where Kyoto’s history and Buddhist lore entwine with restless spirits, Hungry Ghosts, and the rituals that keep them at bay. In Kyoto, ghosts are not just stories—they are neighbors, warnings, and, sometimes, protectors. This atmospheric collection gathers 87 supernatural legends from Japan’s former capital, where every street corner, shrine, and cherry tree harbors its own haunting. From the fires of Obon guiding the ancestors home to the Demon’s Gate and the wells said to lead straight to Hell, each tale pulses with the city’s living relationship to the otherworld. Meet vengeful onryo, Hungry Ghosts with insatiable cravings, and poetic spirits trapped in the Six Realms. Witness monks who bargain with the King of Hell, statues that bleed or move, and women whose longing lingers for centuries. These stories are drawn from centuries-old chronicles, temple lore, and the whispered warnings of Kyoto cab drivers. Written with the intimacy of a local and the curiosity of a folklorist, this book is a rare English-language treasury of Japanese ghost stories—perfect for readers fascinated by yokai, Buddhist afterlife, and the mysterious rituals that shape Kyoto’s everyday life. These tales will change the way you see the city—and what walks its shadowed lanes.

87 Supernatural Tales from Japan

Ghostly Kyoto

A newly discovered firsthand account of the Hiroshima bombing and its aftermath from one of the survivors-a lost classic that brings unprecedented immediacy to our understanding of this world-changing event. The whole city was covered with dark clouds, and conflagrations were breaking out in various directions. Could all of this have happened at once? It was then that black drops of rain, as big as blackberries, began to fall - rain caused by the atomic bomb. I wondered what had happened to my home and church. With a pale face, I ran down the Koi highway...When the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima at 8.15am on 6 August 1945, Methodist minister Kiyoshi Tanimoto was just beginning his day by helping a neighbour on the outskirts of the city. Unbeknownst to him at that moment, the events that awaited him over the following days and weeks were full of horror, but through his courageous determination to save his family, church and city from total devastation, Tanimoto would become internationally recognised as a hero of Hiroshima. In 1946, he featured in American journalist John Hersey's seminal book Hiroshima which catapulted Tanimoto into global fame - but it is only now that we have discovered the manuscript that he wrote in his own words. With a powerful introduction from Tanimoto's daughter, Koko Kondo, a renowned peace activist in her own right, Hiroshima, 8:15 is a remarkable eyewitness account of this devastating moment of history. Written in the immediate aftermath of the bomb, the manuscript had been lost for many decades and was only recently discovered in a university archive.Today, over eighty years later in a world fraught with conflict, Tanimoto's story is a moving and powerful reminder of how the strength, love and resilience of the human spirit will always triumph over the things that divide us.PRAISE FOR HIROSHIMA, 8:15"A gripping real-time search for life and hope" - The Guardian"A stunning historical discovery and a heartrending testimony." - Kai Bird, Pulitzer Prize-winning coauthor of American Prometheus, the book behind Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer"More than 80 years after the bombing, Tanimoto's voice rings out... Hiroshima, 8:15 flows with the relentless intensity of eyewitness testimony." -The Economist"An extraordinary find" - The Sunday Times"Now, more than ever, we need what Tanimoto supplies: a fresh, vivid reminder of the tragedies these weapons inflict on the innocent" - The Telegraph"We have apparently spent eighty years forgetting what atomic warfare actually looks like. This intensely moving book is also an unsparing chronicle of the reality of mass destruction. Pray God it will restore some sense of urgency to our commitment to a nuclear-free world." - Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury"More urgent today than at any time since the end of the Cold War." - Serhii Plokhy, author of The Nuclear Age and Chernobyl"A rare and important addition to history." - Susan Southard, author of Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War

The Economic Legacy of Eugen Varga

A NEW YORKER BEST BOOK OF 2025 A spellbinding look at the history of the world through the stories of twelve carpets Beautiful, sensuous, and enigmatic, great carpets follow power. Emperors, shahs, sultans and samurai crave them as symbols of earthly domination. Shamans and priests desire them to evoke the spiritual realm. The world's 1% hunger after them as displays of extreme status. And yet these seductive objects are made by poor and illiterate weavers, using the most basic materials and crafts; hedgerow plants for dyes, fibres from domestic animals, and the millennia-old skills of interweaving warps, wefts and knots. In Threads of Empire, Dorothy Armstrong tells the histories of some of the world's most fascinating carpets, exploring how these textiles came into being then were transformed as they moved across geography and time in the slipstream of the great. She shows why the world's powerful were drawn to them, but also asks what was happening in the weavers' lives, and how they were affected by events in the world outside their tent, village or workshop. In its wide-ranging examination of these dazzling objects, from the 5th century BCE contents of the tombs of Scythian chieftains, to the carpets under the boots of Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill at the 1945 Yalta Peace Conference, Threads of Empire uncovers a new, hitherto hidden past right beneath our feet.

Der Aufstieg der chinesischen Volkswirtschaft

This edited collection is composed of four uniquely authored chapters, each of which examines collective identity in early modern East Asia through biography and historical accounts. In addition, an introductory chapter lays out the overall principles and concerns of biography in Early Modern East Asia.

The book covers five civilizations (China, Japan, Ry¿ky¿ Kingdom, and Vietnam) while also touching on relations among these civilizations. This volume considers how biographies or life stories can help us better understand these civilizations. Each contributor explores shared concerns about biography, writing, group and individual identity, and the implications of these on the overall genre of biography in East Asia in the early modern period.

'A history that somehow manages to be at once succinct and sweeping: essential reading for anyone interested in this most fascinating of countries' - Tom Holland 'The perfect introduction to [Japan's] intriguing society is Christopher Harding's lively new A Short History of Japan... The book is short, yes - but its scope is long, deep and rich' - Rana Mitter, History Extra, History Books of the Year 2025 In this enormously enjoyable introduction to a remarkable country, Christopher Harding traces Japan's rich history over several millennia. Beginning with its earliest coastal communities through to the spread of Buddhism, the rise of the warlords, the promise and menace of the West and Japan's own empire-building, Harding explores how a distinctly Japanese society and culture was forged.Drawing on the latest scholarship, A Short History of Japan moves beyond traditional tourist-board clichés to consider Japan's own view of its past, values and culture, from ceramics and theatre to food and architecture. The result is a sensory, tactile history conveying to the reader much about Japan's special nature. Harding skilfully shows how these everyday details are intimately bound up with the bigger historical picture, as an expression of the values that have been extraordinarily successful in helping the country to cope with centuries of radical change.
