Environmental economics is growing rapidly. It is simply not sufficient to consider consumption, production, and welfare in isolation from the natural environment. Integrating ecological systems in economic analysis requires to take the possible occurrence of tipping points or regime shifts into account. This Element focuses on two recent developments in environmental economics theory. One is economic management of ecological systems with tipping points, with the lake as the classical example. The other one is investigating the consequences of uncertain possible shocks to parameters in economic models, with the carrying capacity in a fishery and total factor productivity (due to climate tipping) in Ramsey growth as examples. This Element provides a precise account of the concepts, techniques, and results in the analysis of these models, which shows the effects of tipping and allows for other applications. One of the most pressing issues in development today is the employment challenge in low- and middle-income countries. As more young people enter the labor force--and as structural transformation unfolds amid deindustrialization, technological disruption, and global competition--the question of how to create sufficient decent jobs has become central to the economic future of the Global South. Although this is a shared challenge across developing regions, it is particularly acute in Africa, where rapid demographic change and urbanization are colliding with limited industrial expansion. This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other.&nbsp;It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically. Patrick Bond is a political economist and professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent more than two decades teaching at the Wits University School of Governance in Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban. During the late 1980s he pursued doctoral studies in economic geography at Johns Hopkins University, while learning politics in the anti-apartheid, labour, student and community movements. This book analyzes the impact of national culture on a range of corporate carbon practices in major economies since the Paris Agreement. It does so by exploring the interaction between hard institutions such as carbon policies and regulation and soft institutions such as national culture.The book focuses on national culture as a key factor in corporate decarbonization practices, one traditionally overlooked by analytical frameworks rooted in economic development, laws and regulation. It argues that fighting climate change requires collaboration from organisations in countries with diverse cultures. Managers and various stakeholders who exert significant influence over climate actions are likely to respond to a climate threat in accordance with their cultural prescriptions towards risk, regulation, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement. Analysing a large, cross-country dataset covering firms from both developing and emerging companies, the book analyses firm-level decisions, behaviours, strategies and outcomes related to decarbonization. It finds that corporate decisions to decarbonize are influenced not just by formal institutions such as macrolevel regulations, climate standards and policies, but softer institutions such as national culture which either facilitate or constrain a firm's ability to adopt effective climate strategies.
