Canadian Silk in a Global Economy

This book investigates the history of the Protestant voting blocs and associations in the Irish border counties of Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, from 1920 to 2016. While there are many studies on the history of Irish Unionism and Protestantism, there has been a lack of research concerning the political history of the Protestant community in the border counties following partition. Many Protestant Unionists in counties Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan felt betrayed by their six county counterparts breaking the Ulster Covenant in abandoning a nine-county Northern Ireland. However, the Unionist Associations of these counties evolved after the implementation of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922 and adapted to their new political environment by becoming ‘Protestant’ Associations. The author seeks to explore how these Associations were established, and how they reacted to political changes during the twentieth century. Arguing that Protestant Associations arose as a Unionist shock response to Ireland’s partition in 1922, the author demonstrates how they aimed to ensure their political representation and the maintaining of Protestant interests. Support for these associations dwindled over time due to demographic change, a decline in membership of the Orange Order, and the gradual erosion of Southern Protestantism as a separate political identity over the course of multiple generations. Shedding light on why these associations lasted until the twenty-first century, and then disbanded, this book examines how former Southern Unionists in the border counties evolved their political identity following partition.

Literatures, Cultures, Translation

Interpreting The Amistad Trials traces the signal importance of interpreters and translators in the famous 19th-century Amistad case and discusses how race, ethnicity, slavery, and colonialism shaped this story. From the recruitment process to the various oral to sign languages that mediated linguistically in the Africans' life inside and outside the courtroom, and from evidentiary documents to fraudulent translations to credible testimonies, Jeanette Zaragoza-De León demonstrates the crucial importance of translation and interpretation in the Amistad plot and outcome. De León examines handwritten letters, pamphlets, newspapers, and judicial files, and adopts a critical race theory and postcolonial lens to analyze these materials. Although these critical interpretations and translations travelled transatlantically via Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States, De León highlights the common thread which also geographically unites Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic as part of the Amistad story. One of the most comprehensive studies of recorded events in the history of interpretation and translation in the Americas, Interpreting The Amistad Trials is a valuable resource for researchers studying coloniality, enslavement, race and ethnic studies and examining how these issues mattered then and now.

Oxford New Histories of Philosophy

This volume comprises forty-five philosophical texts about slavery that were composed in Europe and America between 1765 and 1800. The texts, selected and in some cases newly translated by Julia Jorati, discuss various aspects of slavery, and from many different perspectives. Written by enslaved and formerly enslaved antislavery authors, their allies, and a few of their opponents, they demonstrate that the debate about slavery in the late eighteenth century, during the first major transnational abolitionist movement, was remarkably multifaceted and philosophically sophisticated. Some authors base their arguments on the moral principles embraced by revolutionaries in France and America, such as the principle that all men have an inalienable right to liberty; others draw on different moral frameworks such as utilitarianism, natural law theory, social contract theory, and Biblical ethics. In addition to arguments for and against the moral permissibility of transatlantic slavery, the texts in Slavery in Early Modern Philosophy 1765-1800 also examine other related philosophical issues, such as complicity, reparations, racial bias, the right to rebel, the effects of enslavement on the human mind, and the epistemic dimensions of oppression. This volume serves as a companion to Jorati's Slavery in Early Modern Philosophy 1500-1765: Essential Readings and will interest scholars and students seeking a deeper understanding of these underexamined debates.

Slavery in Early Modern Philosophy 1765-1800

A bold reinterpretation of French colonialism from its medieval roots to the early nineteenth century

Between 1400 and 1800, the people of Europe, Africa, and the Americas grew ever more connected by overseas trade and colonization. Histories of this transformative era have been dominated by Iberian and British experiences, overlooking the vast reach of the pre-Napoleonic French Empire. Yet by the mid-eighteenth century, France claimed nearly a third of North America, ruled over the Caribbean's most profitable and brutal plantations, and controlled a substantial proportion of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

In Beyond the Ocean, Christopher Hodson and Brett Rushforth reveal the significant role that France played in the history of the Atlantic world and the ways the Atlantic shaped France in return. Drawing on expansive original research in multiple languages, they craft an unconventional history of empire that highlights the experiences, priorities, and influence of Native Americans and West Africans, both free and enslaved. French sailors, nuns, smugglers, and weavers also appear as dynamic historical actors who shaped the emerging empire as much as kings and bureaucrats.

Driven by compelling individual stories woven into a sweeping chronological narrative, Beyond the Ocean offers a bold new interpretation of French colonialism that recovers the full complexity of a misunderstood empire and reveals its profound significance to the interconnected Atlantic basin and the early modern world.

From Tea Party to Trump

A Short History of America

Why Big Labor moved to the right— and the fight ahead for the left to win back America’s working class Unions helped construct the American middle class, defeat Jim Crow, and advance progressive rights, but in Trump’s America, the labor movement is changing. In Big Labor's Big Shift, journalist Nathan Bomey explores how Big Labor and the working class are no longer an automatic ally of the American left. Fueled by decades of economic decline, political disillusionment, and cultural disenfranchisement, new politically nebulous and economically populist leaders in the movement are building a powerful new movement based on class warfare that prizes wage and benefit gains over traditional progressive priorities. Through original reporting and first-hand interviews, Bomey traces key events that have led to this political shift. Bomey reveals: -At the Teamsters, president Sean O’Brien is cozying up to Donald Trump and blasting Democrats as tools of big business, even showing up at the Republican National Convention to deliver his message. -At the United Auto Workers, president Shawn Fain is seizing an opportunity to break the free trade consensus in Washington. The devout Christian, who wields religious rhetoric from the stump, is aligning with the Trump White House on tariffs and blasting Democrats for aggressively pursuing electric vehicles to fight climate change. Bomey shows how the two interconnected phenomena represent a massive political realignment—not just along cultural and nationalism lines, but of the working class itself away from its historic roots in the Democratic party. Urgent and compelling, Big Labor's Big Shift encapsulates the fight for the soul of the union movement.

'Few historians write with Serhii Plokhy's authority, clarity or global vision... Essential reading, and a marvellous book' Peter FrankopanFrom the bestselling author of Chernobyl comes a sweeping history of the geopolitics behind the nuclear arms race, from the first atomic bomb to today On 16 July 1945, the Nuclear Age began with the explosion of the first atomic bomb and the words of J. Robert Oppenheimer: 'Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.' While the threat of mutually assured destruction kept a lid on a simmering and tense geopolitical landscape, events like the Chernobyl disaster and near-misses like the Cuban Missile Crisis showed that total destruction was only ever one malfunction, mistake, or miscommunication away. Now, as governments re-arm their nuclear arsenals, treaties designed to limit the acquisition and use of nuclear weapons fall away, and nuclear weapons come increasingly within reach of non-state actors, we are on the brink of a renaissance of the nuclear industry. In The Nuclear Age, acclaimed historian Serhii Plokhy paints an intricate picture of a world governed by fear. From the first artificial splitting of the atom in 1917 and the race to create the first atomic bomb in World War II, through the fraught arms race of the Cold War, to the imperialism, neo-colonial motivation and wars being waged today, the threat posed by nuclear weapons is as pertinent as ever.As he examines the motivations of key players, Plokhy confronts the crucial question of our age: what can we learn from the first nuclear arms race that can help us to stop the new one?

Mexico City was America's largest city in the seventeenth century - a genuine metropolis. In this deeply researched book, Tatiana Seijas reveals a rich tapestry of stories about essential workers who remade and transformed the city during this period. Her narrative style carries readers to a unique place and time with residents from around the world who sold food, facilitated transportation, provided care, and valued the city's silver. Free and enslaved people from Africa and Asia, immigrants, and Native Americans pursued opportunities in a wealthy, yet deeply unequal environment, where working people claimed parts of the city for themselves. They carved out spaces to create new businesses and protect their livelihoods, altering the cityscape itself in the process. American Metropolis brings Mexico City to life from the perspective of the working people who transformed this early modern metropolis.

“In Disrupting Order, authors Nona and Virgil Storr provide a compelling reassessment of the significance of the Burma Road Riot.… Beyond a solid theoretical intervention, the authors are to be commended for the depth of archival and ethnographic research that makes this study an excellent contribution to Bahamian social-political history and larger studies on public disturbances.”—Christopher Curry, author of Freedom and Resistance
"This book provides a fascinating account of the 1942 riot that occurred in the Bahamas.”—Matthew Moran, author of The Republic and the Riots
“It does not glorify unrest but provides a thoughtful framework to understand why such moments arise and how they shape the trajectory of a people.”—J. Kwasi Thompson, Member of Parliament for East Grand Bahama and Former Minister of State for Grand Bahama and Finance
Are riots more than just breakdowns of order? Are rioters just violently and chaotically disrupting the status quo or are they individuals acting together in a surprisingly orderly manner? In Disrupting Order, Nona Martin Storr and Virgil Henry Storr argue that riots are rule-governed, self-generating, emergent phenomena. Viewing riots as what they call “tensive emergent orders” offers a grammar for discussing riots that foregrounds the motivations and actions of individual rioters, the tacit rules that rioters follow, and the socio-political causes and consequences of riots. Applying this grammar to the 1942 riot that occurred in the Bahamas, Storr and Storr demonstrate how the 1942 riot was not just a momentary outburst but a watershed event in the country’s history, ushering in far-reaching socio-political changes. As we move into an era of frequent extreme protests, Disrupting Order urges us to rethink why the threatened and marginalized sometimes speak through riots and gives us a framework to assess the impact of their speaking in this way.
Nona Martin Storr is Senior Affiliated Scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Her writings on riots have appeared in the Journal of Caribbean History, Island Studies Journal, and Space and Culture.
Virgil Henry Storr is Don C. Lavoie Senior Fellow in the Mercatus Center's F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and Professor of Economics at George Mason University. Storr’s previous books with Palgrave Macmillan include Do Markets Corrupt Our Morals? and Community Revival in the Wake of Disaster.

In collaboration with JVL Media—a captivating exploration of why many high-performing Black business leaders attribute their transformational leadership qualities to their experiences growing up in the Black Church and how we can foster these skills in younger generations despite waning church attendance. The Black church in the U.S. has long been a “one-stop shop” for developing Black leaders, teaching them many of the qualities required to lead effectively in today’s ultra-competitive, digital, and swiftly transforming corporate world. Many high-performing Black leaders benefited from their experiences growing up in this cultural institution steeped in rich history.Merging cultural study with applied neuroscience and tenets of positive psychology, L. Michelle Smith dissect how these qualities are demonstrated by leaders across industries, from resiliency to their sense of undeniable purpose, their ability to build community and collaborative environments, the delivery and language of their speaking style to their unique leadership flair. She reveals how this historic institution has served as a timeless wellspring of leadership development, empowerment, and cultural preservation and ultimately, is Black leaders’ “secret sauce.”Call and Response also explores whether the Black Church will be able to continue to ingrain these skills in future generations. Smith examines how cultural shifts have resulted in a decline in church attendance, how online attendance has risen since the Covid pandemic, and finally, how Black leaders may—or may not—be passing these traditions down to their children.

Very Short Introductions

Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring

Asians have migrated to North America for centuries, in search of opportunities and conveyed by increasingly dense, international circuits of trade, labor markets, and family networks. Drawn by the riches promised by the relatively undeveloped, but not unpopulated, New World, Asians joined a diverse array of immigrants arriving in capacities such as merchants, farmers, fishermen, soldiers, missionaries, artists and artisans, industrial and agricultural laborers, technicians and scientists, journalists, sailors, diplomats, tourists, bankers, students, and entrepreneurs of every stripe. They contributed significantly to the massive transformation of the United States into the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world, particularly on the west coast and Hawaii. Unlike their European counterparts, however, Asians challenged American conceptions of racial homogeneity and national culture which produced legislative and institutional efforts to segregate them through immigration laws, restrictions on citizenship, and limits on employment, property ownership, access to public services, and civil rights. Only with World War II, the Cold War, and the Civil Rights era's remaking of racial ideologies and forging of a more egalitarian, multiethnic democracy Asian Americans have gained ground and acceptance, albeit in the still stereotyped category of "model minorities."

Asian American History: A Very Short Introduction provides a narrative interpretation of key themes that emerge in the history of Asian migrations to North America. Clearly written and elegantly argued, this book complements typical American history narratives by highlighting how Asian immigration has shaped the evolution of ideological and legal interpretations of America as a "nation of immigrants."

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
