In collaboration with JVL Media—a captivating exploration of why many high-performing Black business leaders attribute their transformational leadership qualities to their experiences growing up in the Black Church and how we can foster these skills in younger generations despite waning church attendance. The Black church in the U.S. has long been a “one-stop shop” for developing Black leaders, teaching them many of the qualities required to lead effectively in today’s ultra-competitive, digital, and swiftly transforming corporate world. Many high-performing Black leaders benefited from their experiences growing up in this cultural institution steeped in rich history.Merging cultural study with applied neuroscience and tenets of positive psychology, L. Michelle Smith dissect how these qualities are demonstrated by leaders across industries, from resiliency to their sense of undeniable purpose, their ability to build community and collaborative environments, the delivery and language of their speaking style to their unique leadership flair. She reveals how this historic institution has served as a timeless wellspring of leadership development, empowerment, and cultural preservation and ultimately, is Black leaders’ “secret sauce.”Call and Response also explores whether the Black Church will be able to continue to ingrain these skills in future generations. Smith examines how cultural shifts have resulted in a decline in church attendance, how online attendance has risen since the Covid pandemic, and finally, how Black leaders may—or may not—be passing these traditions down to their children.

Markets and Governments in Economic History

How the market that made the American Dream was made--and what that history tells us about its future and fluctuations. When Americans poured into cities and suburbs during the twentieth century, they needed capital to build and own homes. The market that emerged did more than merely provide it: the American mortgage market became the consequential, if occasionally misunderstood, cornerstone of the US financial system. House Money traces the history of the growth and occasional collapse of the American mortgage market over the last 150 years. Jonathan Rose and Kenneth Snowden show how three major housing-related crises (of the 1930s, 1980s, and 2000s) were not just cyclical events nor bubbles. Rather, they were episodes in a common pattern: shocks produced when the availability of capital in the market was eclipsed by the risk the market took on. Rose and Snowden chart the macro factors that produced these capital/risk asymmetries, showing that in all three crises, the macroeconomic trends--not just bubbles, not banker avarice--conspired to create a downturn despite federal and private safeguards. This illustrates Rose and Snowden's core principle: housing markets can (and often, must) shoulder considerable risk. When the capital behind that risk evaporates, trouble becomes more likely. Mining more than a century of economic history, Rose and Snowden show how the institutions and practices in the American mortgage market reflect the push-pulls of its past--both the private innovations and the government interventions. House Money reveals the great risk undertaken in service to American homeownership--and the perennial question of what happens when that risk goes wrong.

From Tea Party to Trump

A Short History of America

The culminating volume in the acclaimed Gotham series, Gotham at War delivers an unforgettable portrait of America's greatest city during history's most catastrophic conflict.

Gotham at War unveils the history of New York and the Second World War, from isolationism and factionalism to crucible of the American effort and the Allied Cause in a total and global war.

Kaleidoscopic and immersive, Gotham at War captures the full spectrum of New York and the war from every possible aspect-social, political, economic, and military. Even before the war had started street battles between New York's homegrown fascists and the workers' movement-allied with immigrants from all over the world and their children in the barrios of Gotham-played prelude. Set in the generation after race "scientists" based in the elite warrens of the Upper East Side championed and then imposed national immigration restriction, Gotham at War sees New Yorkers struggle to shake off the city's eugenic past.

Between 1933 and 1945, the city wrestled with itself, starting from the rise of Hitler through isolationism and growing interventionism; through Pearl Harbor and a full-throated war effort, when millions of American soldiers and sailors and billions of tons of materiel passed through New York's waterfronts to the warfronts. Along the way Mike Wallace's saga traces the transformation of New York, embracing garment workers and skyscrapers; the subway and Wall Street; gangsters and idealists; pols and reformers; nightclubs and boardrooms; Nazi infiltrators and FBI gumshoes; magazines and movies; shuls and cathedrals; every neighborhood, every industry, and all the peoples of the city swept up in a world that had caught fire.

Here is a portrait of a city and a war like no other. Gotham at War traces the transformation of New York from Depression-wracked mother of exiles to a front in the Second World War, and ultimately to the seat of the United Nations and a very contested "capital of the world."

Race and Gender in the US Economy is the first economic and legal analysis of the status of women and Asian, Black, and Latinx Americans in the United States. Gerald Jaynes argues that changing antidiscrimination laws had an undervalued impact on behavioral norms as Americans fought to end discrimination in the country's institutions. These fights often happened outside the economic marketplace and yet improved the economic status of people of color and women. Building on his decades of expertise, Jaynes blends economic reasoning and data with bold historical narrative to examine how developments in constitutional law, extending from the Thirteenth Amendment's abolition of slavery to and beyond the Civil Rights Act of 1964, changed the economic status of minoritized groups. He provides readers with an insightful new way of looking at the effectiveness of political action in determining economic gains.

Mercatus Studies in Political and Social Economy

“In Disrupting Order, authors Nona and Virgil Storr provide a compelling reassessment of the significance of the Burma Road Riot.… Beyond a solid theoretical intervention, the authors are to be commended for the depth of archival and ethnographic research that makes this study an excellent contribution to Bahamian social-political history and larger studies on public disturbances.”—Christopher Curry, author of Freedom and Resistance
"This book provides a fascinating account of the 1942 riot that occurred in the Bahamas.”—Matthew Moran, author of The Republic and the Riots
“It does not glorify unrest but provides a thoughtful framework to understand why such moments arise and how they shape the trajectory of a people.”—J. Kwasi Thompson, Member of Parliament for East Grand Bahama and Former Minister of State for Grand Bahama and Finance
Are riots more than just breakdowns of order? Are rioters just violently and chaotically disrupting the status quo or are they individuals acting together in a surprisingly orderly manner? In Disrupting Order, Nona Martin Storr and Virgil Henry Storr argue that riots are rule-governed, self-generating, emergent phenomena. Viewing riots as what they call “tensive emergent orders” offers a grammar for discussing riots that foregrounds the motivations and actions of individual rioters, the tacit rules that rioters follow, and the socio-political causes and consequences of riots. Applying this grammar to the 1942 riot that occurred in the Bahamas, Storr and Storr demonstrate how the 1942 riot was not just a momentary outburst but a watershed event in the country’s history, ushering in far-reaching socio-political changes. As we move into an era of frequent extreme protests, Disrupting Order urges us to rethink why the threatened and marginalized sometimes speak through riots and gives us a framework to assess the impact of their speaking in this way.
Nona Martin Storr is Senior Affiliated Scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Her writings on riots have appeared in the Journal of Caribbean History, Island Studies Journal, and Space and Culture.
Virgil Henry Storr is Don C. Lavoie Senior Fellow in the Mercatus Center's F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and Professor of Economics at George Mason University. Storr’s previous books with Palgrave Macmillan include Do Markets Corrupt Our Morals? and Community Revival in the Wake of Disaster.

Bloomsbury Studies on Cuba

This book by Paolo Spadoni and José Luis Perelló Cabrera examines the history of tourism in Cuba and the expansion and struggles of international tourism in Cuba in the post-Cold War era. The Cuban Tourism Industry: Evolution, Challenges, and Prospects begins with a historical review of the development of tourism as an important industry in pre-1959 Cuba and the subsequent decline in the first fifteen years of the revolution before a modest recovery in the second half of the 1970s and during the 1980s. Spadoni and Cabrera continue with a thorough analysis of the remarkable expansion of international tourism in Cuba in the post-Cold War era and in the era of improved relations with the United States that officially began in 2014, along with an assessment of the sector's economic impact and its main challenges. A critical assessment of the damaging effects on the Cuban tourism sector of stiffened U.S. sanctions imposed by the Trump administration, and largely maintained by the Biden administration, is also provided. This book examines tourism trends in Cuba and the Caribbean in the post-pandemic era and sheds additional light on Cuba's recent tourism performance to underscore key flaws of the Cuban tourism industry and suggest potential adjustments.

Essays outlining the emergence, evolution, and application of the Clean Water Act and its impact on the waters of New York's Lake Champlain Basin.Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in focus, The Clean Water Act and the Lake Champlain Basin features the work of scholars who think deeply about the connections between the 1972 U.S. Clean Water Act and the waters of the Lake Champlain Basin. Each contribution considers contemporary policy-relevant issues; in so doing, this collection examines and emphasizes the background, scope, and impacts of policy decisions. As such, the focus of this book is purposely broad, considering local, state, federal and binational perspectives. Full of fresh arguments and insights about a complex and relatively understudied relationship and expanding on previous academic treatments of the Clean Water Act, this volume also complements applied studies centered on Lake Champlain Basin water-management issues and activities.

The broad aim of the book, divided into seven chapters, is to analyse the effects of the restrictions imposed on the British population as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic on the lives of parents with young children (of primary age and below), with a particular focus on the emotional impact of the time period. Key topics and themes discussed include parents' experiences of pregnancy and birth, education and childcare, work, leisure, and health during the pandemic.

Rainbows in the Windows

An Oral History of Young Families in the COVID-19 Pandemic

It has been called the year that changed everything, the postwar watershed in which the forces that shaped public and private life erupted, everywhere and all at once--New York, Paris, Prague, Mexico City. Beginning with the Tet Offensive in Vietnam in January and continuing through the inauguration of Richard Nixon as president the following January, 1968 witnessed the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, the Democratic Convention in Chicago, and the irresistible rise of a rebellious spirit that questioned every form of authority. Each month brought a fresh wave of upheaval with shared undercurrents---deep frustrations, bold aspirations, and a growing conviction that change, whether peaceful and violent, was inevitable. Political unrest, civil rights struggles, anti-war protests, generational shifts: the causes were manifold and complex, yet their convergence was unmistakable.

Alexander Bloom captures the explosive energy of a world in upheaval, illuminating how the events of 1968 were driven by youth movements, inspired by music and the subversive pull of countercultural ideals, all of which transcended borders. In Prague, young people tuned into Western radio, embracing the same sounds and messages reverberating through London and San Francisco. Styles of dress, personal expression, and radical ideals spread rapidly, fueled by an expanding media. The revolution was in fact being televised, making distant struggles immediate and personal, and turning local movements into global moments.

Together, these forces made 1968 a year unlike any before or any since. For many, it felt as if the ground beneath them had shifted. Political and social transformation seemed not just possible but imminent, across the nation and around the world. Not all the promises or expectations of that year bore fruit and the backlash it generated remains with us. Still, it marked an irrevocable turning point in world history. In 1968, the world didn't just change---it shook to its core.
