Tracing the development of Catholic ideas in Japan and China during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, this book provides an overview of the evolution of the missionary strategy in East Asia while focusing on the early emplantation of Catholicism in Korea. Kevin Cawley recreates the tumultuous period for gender relations and explores interreligious interactions between Confucians and Catholics. Highlighting the textual production this period inspired, this book examines writings such as the catechism of the Italian Jesuit, Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), which went on to convert a group of elite Confucian scholars to the new religion. It also underscores the importance of the vernacular catechism written by Chong Yakchong (1760–1801), a convert from a prominent Confucian family, who was eventually executed. Chong's text made Catholicism easily understandable for women, as well as men from lower social classes, who eventually converted in significant numbers effecting real social change.Outlining the shift from rejection to acceptance of new texts composed by early Korean converts, this book explores emergent Catholicism in Japan, China and Korea, as well as the various challenges encountered and how the mission strategy changed as a result. Exploring gender relations, both in relation to Confucianism and Catholics during this period, this book provides insight into this previously under researched aspect of East Asian Catholicism. In this study, we learn how religious persecution and political tactics manipulated, terrified and exterminated converts to Catholicism. From European Jesuits to Korean Confucians, this book outlines a fascinating journey of intercultural engagement between Western and Eastern worldviews.

To what extent is fiction an exploration of the ultimate ends of humanity - of heaven, hell, death and judgement? And how do modern authors use the literary resources of eschatological imaginings in their storytelling? The religions of Asia continually fascinate people around the world. During the 20th century, the Taoist (Daoist) tradition of China became well-known. But even at the century's end, our understandings of Taoism was limited to what scholars of Asia and Western lands had revealed. Few knew of the probing researches also being conducted by scholars of Russia, particularly Evgeny Torchinov (1956-2003). Torchinov, Russia's leading authority on Taoism, died suddenly before completing the final English edition of his comprehensive introduction, Daosizm: Opyt Istoriko-religioznogo Opisaniia. Leah Hirsig was a Swiss-American occultist, follower and lover of the prominent British occultist Aleister Crowley in the 1920s. The self-styled Great Beast 666, Crowley was also the founder and prophet of the new religion Thelema. This annotated edition of Hirsig's complete magical diaries and previously unpublished correspondence between her and Crowley sheds new light on their relationship and the broader role of women in twentieth-century occultism. 

A schoolteacher by training who lived, loved, and travelled independently, Hirsig embodied the ideals of the New Woman, particularly in her attraction to a counter-normative occult movement. In 1920, Hirsig was appointed Crowley's Scarlet Woman, a title that identified her as the earthly avatar of the Thelemic goddess Babalon and as Crowley's feminine counterpart. In this role, Hirsig was essential in stewarding the Thelemic community during an eventful period, which coincided with the establishment of an Abbey of Thelema in Cefalù, Sicily, and the authorship of several of Crowley's important magical works. In 1924, Hirsig was replaced as Scarlet Woman, but she remained devoted to Thelema for several years. 

Hirsig's magical diaries provide a unique window into the possibilities and challenges faced by women occultists in the early twentieth century. Her writing highlights how occult movements offered heightened opportunities for women's leadership while also being impacted by wider gender inequalities. The diaries are presented with a selection of previously unpublished letters and poems by Hirsig and Crowley, providing insight into their relationship and the period from Hirsig's attraction to Thelema in 1919 until her departure from the movement in 1927-1930. The book also includes an extensive editorial introduction that situates Hirsig within Thelema, twentieth-century occultism, and women's changing roles during this period.
