T&T Clark’s Study Guides to the New Testament

This study guide to 1 Corinthians aims at providing historical, literary, and theoretical introductory materials to graduate and advanced undergraduate students. Ekaputra Tupamahu focuses first on the historical introduction into the city of Corinth (as both a Hellenistic polis and Roman colony) and Paul's relationship with the Corinthians. Tupamahu then examines the issues of surrounding literary analysis, such as literary structure and rhetorical strategy. Finally, he highlights several theoretical frameworks in the process of reading the conflict in the Corinthian church. The theoretical discussions in this book (i.e., postcolonial, race-ethnic, and gender) are based primarily on Homi Bhabha's insistence that colonial discourse will work through the production of both racial and sexual difference, with the overall goal of providing sufficient introductory materials to students to wrestle with the worlds behind, in, and in front of the text - while at the same time fully aware that these divisions are not completely separate from one another. Consequently, students are stimulated to explore further the many different ways of understanding the relationship between Paul, his letter and the Corinthians.

Barringer describes the development of the Altis, the most sacred area of Olympia, where monuments to athletes successful in the games joined those erected to the gods and battlefield victories. Rival city-states and rulers built monuments to establish eminence, tout alliances, and join this illustrious company in a rich intergenerational dialogue. The political importance of Olympia was matched by its place as the largest sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, king of the gods. Befitting Zeus’s role as god of warfare, the Olympian oracle was consulted to ensure good omens for war, and the athletic games embodied the fierce competition of battle. Other gods and heroes were worshipped at Olympia too, Hera, Artemis, and Herakles among them. Drawing on a comprehensive knowledge of the archaeological record, Barringer describes the full span of Olympia’s history, from the first monumental building around 600 BC to the site’s gradual eclipse in the late Christianized Roman empire. Extensively illustrated with maps and diagrams, Olympia brings the development of Olympia vividly to life for modern readers.

"Presenting a new approach to Euripides' plays, this book explores the playwright's ancient tragedies in relation to quotation culture. Treating extant works and lost works side-by-side, Matthew Wright presents a selective survey of ways in which Euripidean tragedy was quoted within antiquity, both in social contexts (on the comic stage, at symposia, in law courts, in education) and in different literary genres (drama, biography, oratory, philosophy, literary scholarship, history and anthologies). There is also a discussion of the connection between quotability and classic status, where Wright asks what quotations can tell us about ancient reading habits. The implication is that Euripides actively participated in quotation culture by deliberately making certain portions of his plays stand out as especially quotable"--

Can we still talk about Christian ethics? As most data show a great exodus from the Church, and general dissatisfaction with organized Christianity, there exists an urgent question of whether 2,000 years of Christianity have done more harm than good upon the Earth and its people. Christianity has been integral to colonialism, white supremacy, and the Atlantic Slave Trade, and perpetuates racism today. Large segments of Christianity continue to endorse discrimination against women, LGBTQ individuals, and other marginalized groups; underwrite a capitalist system that destroys the planet and renders portions uninhabitable; and manufacture a complex, individualized approach to poverty that promotes charity work but resists structural engagement. Christianity has done much harm in the name of Jesus. In fact, for at least the past thousand years, the mission of Jesus has been captive to a colonial ethic of exploitation and oppression that has contorted and distorted much of Christian theology and practice of ministry. This book issues a call to liberate Jesus from this oppressive, colonial ethic. It enjoins Christians with privilege and power to promote a decolonial, liberative Christian ethic that serves as a corrective to the harms Christianity has manifest and conventional Christian ethics has neglected or even supported. Liberating Jesus is designed for use in seminary or undergraduate classrooms, as well as for broader, public appeal, such as church or denominational study groups. It is not intended to be a comprehensive survey of the field. Rather, particular commitments animate the framework, namely a concern for justice and liberation. The ethical model presented and applied draws upon interwoven threads of liberationist, womanist, Anabaptist, and postliberal theologies, and offers a framework for a communitarian virtue ethic of liberation. It identifies the commonalities between these threads, notably the importance of community, character, and justice-while acknowledging their distinctions-and directs them toward the target audience: Christians who embody and enjoy various levels of social, economic, and political privilege. In doing so, it calls on them to confront the oppressive legacy of Christian ethics and begin to understand ethics as formation into a life of service and advocacy, following the witness of Jesus, for the liberation of the marginalized. By drawing on such an array of theological approaches, the book offers multiple entry points for readers from various perspectives and introduces them to a diverse collection of thinkers and surprising conclusions found at the intersections of these approaches. Liberating Jesus provides Christians with various levels of privilege a way to understand their role and responsibility in participating in movements for justice and liberation. Includes discussion questions and resources for further reading at the end of each chapter.
