What Politicians Won't Tell You About the Economy

The history of the financial markets is highly complex but just as fascinating! From the 17th century until today, financial markets have never ceased to grow in importance, bringing with them fantasies, fears, greed and sometimes crises, called "crashes" as if finance was its own world. From the "golden boys" to "Occupy Wall Street", it is a world that separates these two eras, from the love to the hate of finance. However, in the face of tomorrow's challenges, such as the necessary ecological transition, finance finds itself the demiurge of tomorrow! Discover the history of this colorful universe, through the main theses that have marked the financial world, its evolution to the point of being the incarnate evil and the tracks envisaged so that finance is at the service of a more feasible future.

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 3.33, Ethiopian Civil Service University, language: English, abstract: This paper examined the relationship between banking sector development and economic growth in Ethiopia. The paper also examines the effect of banking development on economic growth in Ethiopia and to establish which theory holds for Ethiopia between the demand-following and the supply-leading theory. Unlike the majority of previous studies, this study uses the newly developed ARDL-bounds testing approach to examine the relationship. The ARDL-bounds testing approach has numerous advantages over other co-integration techniques, especially when a short time-series dataset is used. In order to test the robustness of the empirical results, three proxies of bank-based financial development have been used; namely: 1) the domestic credit provided by the banking sector as a ratio of GDP, 2) broad money supply as a ratio of GD, 3) private credit as percentage of GDP. Annual time series data between the years 1987 and 2019 were used for the study, from the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) statistical bulletin. The structural break unit root test revealed that all the variables are stationary at their first difference; the bound test cointegration analysis established the existence of long run relationship among the variables. The ARDL revealed that domestic credit provided by the banking sector significantly affected economic growth in the long run, while private credit statistical significant and negatively affect economic growth in the short run during the period of study. The empirical results of this study show that the effect of banking sector development and economic growth in Ethiopia is sensitive to the proxy used to measure the banking sector development. The policymakers need to make policies that can lead to establishment of banking institutions in the rural areas which have limited access to banking services and create enabling legal environment for efficient allocation of credit to the private sector at the same time the supervisory organ shall establish conducive environment for banking institution which are engaging in loan granting for diversified economic sectors for private investment.

The Effect of Banking Sector Development on Economic Growth. Empirical Analysis from Ethiopian Economy Final

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 2,0, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Wirschaftwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to answer the question whether Brexit has negatively or positively affected the financial markets and why. The first two chapters will present the foundations for this thesis, namely more selective information about Brexit, how and why the vote was made, and also about the financial markets and their importance. Since the UK’s official exit from the EU will take place on March 29th, 2019, it is still unclear what the consequences of Brexit will be. Therefore, the main part will focus on the period before and after the referendum, tracking when Brexit's influence began and how it had evolved over the years. In addition, a brief forecast will be given as to how the UK’s withdrawal might eventually affect financial markets. The three financial markets that will be a subject in this thesis are: the foreign exchange market, the stock market and the government bond market. This bachelor’s thesis will be mainly focusing on the markets inside the UK, as the effects there are expected to be the most significant. Due to its ambiguity and topicality, Brexit is the subject of many studies and analysis. This work will be based mainly on two studies: "Kiel Institute for the World Economy"'s study by Raddant, and "Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung"'s study by Caporale et al. Through descriptive literature research and analysis of scientific literature, newspaper articles and government reports, will be examined how and why Brexit has influenced the markets in one way or another. The argumentation will be supported by daily observations of the GBP/USD, GBP/EUR, FTSE 100, UK EPU and 10-Y UK Gilts in the period between January 2016 and June 2018, as well as by self-created graphics based on these observations.

The subsequent pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, triggered unprecedented economic uncertainty, causing substantial upheaval in financial markets worldwide. Major indices, including the S&amp;P 500 and DAX 30, recorded significant losses within a short span.This paper examines the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in influencing stock performance during the COVID-19 crisis, focusing on European companies. CSR, defined as "the responsibility of enterprises for their impact on society" by the European Commission, has been suggested as a potential factor in protecting shareholder wealth during crises. The study aims to assess whether companies engaged in CSR activities exhibit better resilience during economic downturns.The research question driving this study is straightforward: Can engagement in corporate social responsibility shield shareholder wealth from the adverse effects of an economic crisis, mitigating tail risk for European companies? To answer this question, the study analyzes the performance of 428 European companies during the COVID-19 crisis (February 20 - March 23, 2020) and the subsequent recovery period (March 24 - December 31, 2020).The methodology involves cross-sectional regressions, considering performance measures such as abnormal and raw stock returns, as well as idiosyncratic and stock volatility. CSR performance is approximated using Refinitiv's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) scores for 2019. The analysis includes a set of control variables covering risk, accounting metrics, and corporate governance measures.This study contributes to the existing literature by exploring the relationship between CSR engagement and stock performance, specifically in the context of the COVID-19 crisis. The subsequent sections delve into the literature review, data description, methodology, empirical results, and a detailed discussion of the findings.
