This book presents a comprehensive picture of eighteenth-century British authors’ engagement with a society increasingly driven by commercial interests. The books and pamphlets constituting the “discourses” on economic topics overstep the boundaries separating the domains of economics, religion (William Warburton, John Wesley), law (William Blackstone, Lord Mansfield), history (William Robertson, Edward Gibbon), physiology (Richard Morton, Goerge Cheyne) and politics (Edmund Burke, the Abolitionists). An impartial and inclusive history of the “discourses” is what the book purports to construct. The luminaries of the British (and Scottish) Enlightenment (Adam Smith, David Hume), are given due respects, but a great number of less well-known and even anonymous authors also feature in the book. Giving as much scope as possible to the sources themselves, the book pays attention to both the rhetorical and the thematic layers of the quotations, while keeping generalization and theorizations to the minimum. The “eighteenth-century” in the title begins in the 1680s, when some of the important authors such as Nicholas Barbon published their thoughts, and ends in the 1790s, with the contrastive pair of Edmund Burke and Jeremy Bentham.Hye-Joon Yoon

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich VWL - Fallstudien, Länderstudien, , Veranstaltung: Economic History of Russia and Eurasia, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Warum ist Economics of shortage ein sowjetisches Phänomen? Diese Hausarbeit, im Rahmen des Seminars „Economic History of Russia and Eurasia“, befasst sich mit dem Thema Economics of shortage. Es geht um die sowjetische Planwirtschaft. Zeitlich gesehen befindet sich das Phänomen sozialistische Planwirtschaft in der Ära des Kalten Krieges, der zwischen den USA und der Sowjetunion ausgefochten wurde. Im Westen sind die USA der Leitstaat. Die Sowjetunion bildet im Ostblock den Leitstaat und dient als solcher bei dem Wirtschaftssystem der weiteren Staaten des sozialistischen Lagers. Der Fokus dieser Hausarbeit wird aber auf den negativen Eigenschaften der sowjetischen Planwirtschaft liegen. Diese Hausarbeit beinhaltet eine empirische Analyse auf der Basis von Texten. Die abhängige Variable der Hausarbeit ist somit Economics of shortage. Zu den unabhängigen Variablen zählen die Produktion der Konsumgüter und Güter der Schwerindustrie, sowie das GDP per head in der sozialistischen Planwirtschaft. Die Hypothesen der Hausarbeit lauten: Economics of shortage entstand im Sozialismus und ist ein sowjetisches Phänomen. Das Budget war für die Schwerindustrie zu groß und es mangelte an Geld für die anderen Industrien, wie der Ölwirtschaft. Dieses wird durch die Produktionszahlen-, in Mio. Tonnen verdeutlicht. Der Untersuchungszeitraum umfasst die Phase der Existenz der Sowjetunion. Diese wurde 1922 gegründet und zerfiel im Jahr 1991. Weltgeschichtlich spielt die Sowjetunion im Kalten Krieg, der nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg einsetzte, eine Rolle. Diese Hausarbeit stellt eine empirische Analyse dar. Die erste Hypothese besagt, dass es sich bei der die sowjetischen Ökonomie um eine ressourcenabhängige Wirtschaft handelt. Die zweite Hypothese beinhaltet, dass Economics of shortage, die sowjetische Misswirtschaft, durch das Übergewicht der Schwerindustrie entsteht.  Die Hausarbeit beschreibt nach der Einleitung zunächst die Planwirtschaft als Wirtschaftssystem, die das Gegenteil des kapitalistischen Wirtschaftssystems in der Ära des Kalten Krieges war. Das nächste Kapitel befasst sich mit dem Scherpunkt der Hausarbeit, mit Economics of shortage. Es folgen die Auswertung, Literaturliste und Selbstständigkeitserklärung. Damit leitet die Hausarbeit zur Planwirtschaft über.

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 3.33, Ethiopian Civil Service University, language: English, abstract: This paper examined the relationship between banking sector development and economic growth in Ethiopia. The paper also examines the effect of banking development on economic growth in Ethiopia and to establish which theory holds for Ethiopia between the demand-following and the supply-leading theory. Unlike the majority of previous studies, this study uses the newly developed ARDL-bounds testing approach to examine the relationship. The ARDL-bounds testing approach has numerous advantages over other co-integration techniques, especially when a short time-series dataset is used. In order to test the robustness of the empirical results, three proxies of bank-based financial development have been used; namely: 1) the domestic credit provided by the banking sector as a ratio of GDP, 2) broad money supply as a ratio of GD, 3) private credit as percentage of GDP. Annual time series data between the years 1987 and 2019 were used for the study, from the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) statistical bulletin. The structural break unit root test revealed that all the variables are stationary at their first difference; the bound test cointegration analysis established the existence of long run relationship among the variables. The ARDL revealed that domestic credit provided by the banking sector significantly affected economic growth in the long run, while private credit statistical significant and negatively affect economic growth in the short run during the period of study. The empirical results of this study show that the effect of banking sector development and economic growth in Ethiopia is sensitive to the proxy used to measure the banking sector development. The policymakers need to make policies that can lead to establishment of banking institutions in the rural areas which have limited access to banking services and create enabling legal environment for efficient allocation of credit to the private sector at the same time the supervisory organ shall establish conducive environment for banking institution which are engaging in loan granting for diversified economic sectors for private investment.
