From a leading expert on child development, a radical evolutionary perspective on how childhood experiences shape later life. Children who grow up in troubled circumstances-experiencing deprivation or instability, living in a dangerous neighborhood or an abusive family-are more prone to aggression, recklessness, and sexual promiscuity later in life. To most of us, the lesson is clear: adverse childhood conditions make human development go awry. In The Nature of Nurture, renowned developmental psychologist Jay Belsky challenges this interpretation and offers an exciting alternative based on Darwinian theory. There is no reason to assume, he points out, that the psychology of "well-behaved" people is normal while that of "antisocial" adults is aberrant. Instead, the supposedly dysfunctional behaviors correlated with childhood adversity could well be ingenious adaptations to harsh environments. If you are surrounded by danger and uncertainty, then being quick to lash out at potential threats and having lots of offspring at an early age are good ways to maximize your reproductive chances. From an evolutionary perspective, having just a few children and lavishing care on each works well in a stable world, but not in a perilous one. Belsky exposes the romanticism underlying our idealized notions that "natural" equals "good" and that nature intends to maximize human happiness and well-being. When instead we take seriously the fact that humans, too, have been shaped by evolutionary pressures, we can better understand why, how, and for whom childhood experience shapes later life.

An exploration of Cuba's emerging digital culture and Cubans' creation of grassroots networks, digital black markets, and online spaces for public debateUntil just a few years ago, Cuba was one of the least-connected countries in the world. But as digital technology has become increasingly available, Cubans have found inventive ways to work around such remaining barriers as slow speeds, high costs, and inadequate infrastructure. In Island in the Net, Steffen Köhn examines Cuba's nascent digital culture and how it has reconfigured the relationship between the state and its citizens. Köhn shows that through innovations including "sneakernets" (the physical transfer of information by flash drives and other devices), digital black markets, and online spaces for political debates, Cubans have successfully challenged the government's monopoly on media and public discourse. Drawing on multisited ethnographic research, Köhn documents Cuba's digital awakening, from the introduction of accessible Wi-Fi in 2015 to the social media-fueled protests in July 2021. Cubans' community-driven digital innovations, he suggests, could be models for potential alternatives to the current Big Tech-dominated internet. Each chapter in Island in the Net is accompanied by a multimodal anthropology work: a video game, interactive installations, video art, an ethnographic documentary, and an expanded cinema installation. These unique media, created with Cuban artist Nestor Siré and other local collaborators, accessible to readers via a QR code, bring the book's argument vividly to life.

This novel volume presents an ethnography of the gendered dynamics of informal labour relations in three cosmopolitan cities in India-Kolkata, Delhi, and Noida-in order to analyse women's agency and identity formation in the domestic labour sphere in India.Structured around an extensive set of in-depth narratives from female workers and employers, chapters reveal how employers and workers use language to express reciprocal support and care. Novel in its focus on affect-including the emotions, moods, and atmospheres that emerge from, and shape, the conditions of labour-chapters demonstrate the mutual, bi-directional "affective attachments" and dependencies that are formed between employers and workers through practices of mutual care. The book explores the construction of gender identities among workers, in part shaped by a variety of other intersecting relationships, including caste, ethnicity, and religion. As well as an exploration of worker-employer relations within the employers' homes, the book also examines the squatter settlements of workers, uncovering aspects of workers' domestic lives, relationships with each other, and broader relationships between transregional and trans-border migrants.Examining a space where gender, migration, language, and emotion intersect, this book will be of interest to researchers studying gender, South Asian studies, anthropology, labour studies, migration studies, and urban studies.
