Conservators as first responders in a world where our cultural heritage is increasingly at risk Conservation can be understood as a form of knowing; conservators extract meaning about the past from what remains, while noting what is missing and sometimes repairing it. In this erudite and virtuosic book, the historian Peter N. Miller imagines the outlines of a new, expansive notion of conservation that links the world around us—natural and man-made—to the world inside us—our genome, our memories. Putting the work of conservation into conversation with history, philosophy, and literature yields a shift in perspective. It raises questions central to the work of the humanities: What does time mean? How do we write about knowledge? How does care connect humans not just with the world but also with each other? And where does freedom exist in a world of things? Miller casts conservators as first responders in a world as fragile as the things they work on. He argues that a broader conception of conservation can provide the necessary intellectual resources for grappling with the scale of the enormous challenges ahead. Offering a kind of sketch of a curriculum for that future, Miller suggests that shaping the person of the conservator is as important as shaping the field. For only those trained to think about change through the painstaking labor of preserving and restoring will be able to do the work of policy and advocacy required by our uncertain future.

Kant hält die philosophischen Patentrechte am Begriff der Autonomie. Die Befreiung des aufgeklärten Subjekts aus allen Abhängigkeitsverhältnissen bedeutet auch: Eine in reiner praktischer Vernunft fundierte Moral emanzipiert sich begründungslogisch von jeglicher Religion. Gleichwohl erklärt Kant diese nicht einfach für obsolet. Vielmehr beharrt er auf einer eigentümlichen Ergänzungsbedürftigkeit unseres selbstbestimmten Wollens, wodurch Religion zur Konsequenz moralischer Freiheit wird. Moral und Religion stehen nach Kant in einem irreversiblen Implikationsverhältnis: Letztere ist für Erstere nicht notwendig, wird aber ihrerseits durch diese unausweichlich.
Eine unverkürzte Kantdeutung hat daher dem asymmetrischen Verweisungszusammenhang nachzuforschen, der aufgespannt wird durch die drei Zentralbegriffe: Freiheit - Moral - Religion.

How Shakespeare’s exploration of central human questions—about identity, politics, religion and right and wrong—explains his lasting power, popularity and relevance In the eighteenth century, Samuel Johnson famously argued that Shakespeare is enduringly popular because he “is above all writers, at least above all modern writers, the poet of nature; the poet that holds up to his readers a faithful mirror of manners and of life.” Johnson’s view largely prevailed until the late twentieth century, when it was challenged by a growing scepticism about the existence of a general human nature. In Thinking Through Shakespeare, eminent literary critic David Womersley pushes back against this change by exploring how Shakespeare’s plays think through—and invite us to think through—deep human questions of lasting importance. Thinking Through Shakespeare explores four perennial human problems: personal identity, the distinction between civilization and barbarism, the relation between political power and religious authority and the tension between means and ends. This volume aims to make a contribution to the debate surrounding the renaissance of Kant-Studies in the last few decades, with a particular emphasis upon the 'space of feelings'. Kant dominated the modern debate concerning reason, but he did not underestimate the sphere of sensibility. The volume is divided into four sections. The first section is dedicated to the connection between feelings and action from moral, political and religious perspectives. The second section focuses on the feelings and judgements, considering both scientific and aesthetical approaches. The third and fourth sections are dedicated to the legacy of Kant's philosophy. In particular, while the fourth one concentrates on Kant's heritage in the discussion on feelings, the third one deals specifically with the topic feelings in connection with environmental discussions from a Kantian perspective.

Kant zufolge ist Philosophie dann wirklich Weisheitslehre, wenn sie sich den Grundfragen 'Was kann ich wissen?', 'Was soll ich tun?' und 'Was darf ich hoffen?' widmet.
