An exploration of pilgrimage, through nineteen breath-taking sites across the globe

Hurlock K: Holy Places / B

Holy Places

How Pilgrimage Changed the World

Ladies and gentlemen, step right up...On 23 March, 1844, General Tom Thumb, at 25 inches tall, entered the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace and bowed to Queen Victoria. On both sides of the Atlantic, this event marked a tipping point in the nineteenth century: the age of the 'Freak' was born.Bewitching all levels of society, the 'Freak Show' was a world of astonishing spectacle and entertainment. But the real stories and human dramas of the performing men, women and children have been marginalised in the histories of the very people who exploited them.In The Wonders, Dr John Woolf brings to life the history of the Freak show, and how it gave way to some of the great transformations of the age: the birth of showbusiness, celebrity, and 'alternative facts'. The book explores the virtues of the 'Freak' circuit, as well as the ongoing effects of power, fame, exploitation, and our fascination with otherness.Sometimes tragic, sometimes triumphant, and always extraordinary, The Wonders is the true story of the performers whose talents and disabilities helped define an era.

Contextualizing Art Markets

Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. After an extended historiographical introduction, the volume presents case studies and trends from 1860-1940, including: Jewish family businesses in Western Europe; the role of Jews as mediators of art from East Asia; the antisemitism and suspicion faced by Jewish dealers; Jews as theorists, exhibition makers and promoters of modern art ; and the geographical mobility and professional reinvention of Jewish dealers in times of economic and political crisis. With a wide variety of illustrations, including paintings, decorative arts, historic photographs and archival material, the volume adopts a mix of methodological approaches to analyse a key chapter in Jewish cultural history and in the history of the international art market. Includes Afterword by Charles Dellheim, author of Belonging and Betrayal: How Jews Made the Art World Modern (2021).

Negotiating Cultural Modernity

Jewish Dealers and the European Art Market, c. 1860–1940

Introducing new insights into the history of ceramic design and consumption, Neil Ewins departs from the focus on manufacturers and producers and presents a third perspective that puts the multifaceted lives of the merchants, importers and dealers at the centre. Challenging the notion that intermediaries involved in the Anglo-American ceramic trade from the late 18th into the 19th century were simply motivated by maximizing profits and widespread market demands, Ewin's alternative approach demonstrates the value of taking their culture, identity and conscience into account. The geographic gap between the British manufacturer and the American consumer meant that those involved in mercantile activities assumed a highly significant role. Ewins analyses a range of sources including city directories, advertisements, newspapers and family trees to identify those involved in the ceramic trade, supplemented by archival material relating to the Wainwright and Ovington families. Illustrated with examples of ceramics and engravings, chapters explore how the intermediaries commissioned and marketed ceramics for different reasons, influenced by their political, social, religious and moral views. Ewins investigates how culture and a strong sense of identity, the abolition movement, kinship and family ties, religious beliefs and community, and the interracial experience all played a part in the manufacture, distribution and consumption of ceramics in the US market. This volume demonstrates how the role of intermediaries deserves a place in the history of the Anglo-American ceramic trade; beyond design and consumption being production-led or market-led, it reveals that it could also be conscience-led and suggests the picture is far more complex than once understood.

Alternative Narratives in Ceramic History

'Shane is the Indiana Jones of the running world' - Damian Hall, ultra marathon runner Rejuvenate your mindset and unlock your running potential In The Lost Art of Running, Shane Benzie discovered how reconnecting with the human body can revolutionise our running and how we live our lives. Moving his focus from our 'hardware' to our 'software', he now embarks on a journey to illuminate the secrets of the human mind. Shane once again travels the globe in search of answers, discovering the minds and techniques of individuals who push the extreme limits of human performance. He meets big wave surfers and free solo climbers, observes ultra-runners crossing the mountain ranges of Kyrgyzstan, seeks wisdoms from Buddhist monks in Myanmar and even swims with orcas in the freezing depths of the Norwegian fjords. Along the way, he will introduce you to powerful tools - like body and mind mapping - that will transform the way you approach your training, bring your running into sharper focus and ensure that the best coach for your mind and body is none other than you. Part narrative, part coaching session (and always full-time adventure), Shane dives deep into the inner workings of the human mind. He shows how we can rediscover our lost ability to learn, rejuvenate our running, take ownership of our movement and, ultimately, reach our own limitless potential.

Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament 2. Reihe

In this study, Romulus D. Stefanut offers a contextual reading of Philo's
 De vita contemplativa
, exploring its background, genre, composition, and function beyond the so-called "apologetic and historical works" of Philo. Often, scholars have lost the hermeneutical focus of the treatise itself and have concentrated their attention solely on the historical existence of the Mareotic community described in the treatise, advancing arguments related to its historicity or lack thereof. The author therefore suggests that the purpose of
 De vitacontemplativa
is meant to offer the best Jewish Alexandrine expression of a way of life, well-known from ancient Greek philosophy as the theoretical or contemplative life. It is composed in relation rather than opposition to the lost first half of the treatise, dedicated to the practical life of the Essenes. Simultaneously, there might be a friendly polemic between Philo's description of the
 Therapeutae
 versus the Essenes.

The Therapeutae as the Best Paradigm for the Contemplative Life

Mischief and Misadventures in the World of Books

Rogues, Widows and Orphans

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

Performance as Intellectual Property

A fresh interpretation of the Enlightenment that reshapes our understanding of political economy and its intellectual foundations. The origins of political economy are often told as a story of increasing certainty, rationality, and scientific progress. But what if its earliest thinkers were instead preoccupied with uncertainty? In Doubtful Knowledge, Richard Adelman offers a striking new interpretation of eighteenth-century political economy by tracing its roots to the skeptical philosophy of the European Enlightenment.Moving between Scotland and France, Adelman reveals how figures including David Hume, Adam Smith, Denis Diderot, Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, François Quesnay, and the Physiocrats developed a shared understanding of the limits of human knowledge. Rather than presenting markets or societies as systems that could be fully understood or controlled, they emphasized the complexity of the social world, the fallibility of human judgment, and the need for intellectual humility. Through close readings of major philosophical and political-economic texts, Adelman demonstrates that skepticism was not peripheral to early political economy but fundamental to its emergence. Challenging long-held assumptions about the history of economics and Enlightenment thought, Doubtful Knowledge reframes debates about commerce, governance, progress, and human nature.By bringing together intellectual history, literary studies, philosophy, and the history of political economy, Adelman offers a compelling account of how eighteenth-century thinkers understood knowledge itself--and why their questions remain relevant to contemporary discussions about economics, politics, and the limits of expertise.
