How Pilgrimage Changed the World

Tuberculosis has been entwined with hu­manity for millennia. Once romanticized as a malady of poets, today tuberculosis is seen as a disease of poverty that walks the trails of injustice and inequity we blazed for it. In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John be­came fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequi­ties that allow this curable, preventable infec­tious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year. This book explores multicultural religious interactions in Ancient Central and South Asia. Besides encompassing a vast chronological and geographical range, the themes of this book represent a broad illustration of the current main approaches, methodologies, and perspectives on Ancient Central and South Asia studies, including the establishment of new sacred spaces; the introduction of new rituals, ceremonies, and convivial practices; archaeological evidence for religious interaction, coexistence, and conflict, among others. In this book, archaeologists, historians, art historians, and linguists come together to demonstrate the intensity and complexity of cultural interactions within the religious landscape from the fourth century BCE till the fourth century CE.

Moving beyond traditional approaches of acculturation, the book reveals the dynamics between cultures and emphasizes local agencies in selecting and appropriating religious praxis, thus highlighting not only the impact of religious interactions but also the wider cultural impact of human interactions. The book provides both specialist and non-specialist audiences with new data and fresh perspectives regarding interactions between cultures in Ancient Central and South Asia, in turn allowing us to comprehend similar nodes of interactions within the modern context. Its geographical and temporal scope will be interesting to readers working on both European and South Asian history, art, and archaeology. This volume is relevant to scholars studying other areas as well, as it traces the spread and transformation of religious conceptions, objects, representations, and practices, with our regions serving as key nodes in this global system.

Um das Jahr 1800 herum wird Jugend zunehmend zum Ziel neuer erzieherischer Forderungen. In Zeiten einer vermeintlich wachsenden Kriminalität junger Menschen rücken Altersgrenzen und Erziehungsverhältnisse in den Fokus - so soll z.B. die richtige Erziehung vorbeugend wirken. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes betrachten die Konzepte und Ansprüche gegenüber jugendlicher Devianz und Delinquenz in der sogenannten 'Sattelzeit' (1750-1850). Dabei gehen sie auf Quellen ein, die in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen zeigen, wie 'verwahrloste' Jugendliche zum Problem erhoben wurden, dem u.a. mit neuartigen Anstalten begegnet werden sollte.

This book investigates the history of the Protestant voting blocs and associations in the Irish border counties of Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, from 1920 to 2016. While there are many studies on the history of Irish Unionism and Protestantism, there has been a lack of research concerning the political history of the Protestant community in the border counties following partition. Many Protestant Unionists in counties Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan felt betrayed by their six county counterparts breaking the Ulster Covenant in abandoning a nine-county Northern Ireland. However, the Unionist Associations of these counties evolved after the implementation of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922 and adapted to their new political environment by becoming ‘Protestant’ Associations. The author seeks to explore how these Associations were established, and how they reacted to political changes during the twentieth century. Arguing that Protestant Associations arose as a Unionist shock response to Ireland’s partition in 1922, the author demonstrates how they aimed to ensure their political representation and the maintaining of Protestant interests. Support for these associations dwindled over time due to demographic change, a decline in membership of the Orange Order, and the gradual erosion of Southern Protestantism as a separate political identity over the course of multiple generations. Shedding light on why these associations lasted until the twenty-first century, and then disbanded, this book examines how former Southern Unionists in the border counties evolved their political identity following partition.
