de Miramón C: A Feisty Woman

A Feisty Woman

The Memoir of Concha Lombardo de Miramón, 1835–1869

Revealing the people behind the Rothschild name, The Rothschilds explores the lives and legacy of one of the best-known and most impactful families in modern history. The Rothschild name has long been synonymous with wealth and privilege, but as Jews the family has also been dogged by prejudice and hatred. Antisemitism followed them from their earliest beginnings in the oppressive Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt, where Jews were not allowed out after nightfall, to the lofty summits of high finance, art, and culture. However, behind the myths, the glamor, and the conspiracy theories are a group of relatives whose individualism, personalities and occasional eccentricities have been obscured by their shared surname.

In The Rothschilds, Harry Freedman delves into their lives on a historical tour, marked by an unfailing attention to the influence of individual family members on world events.

We travel from the genesis of the Rothschild international banking empire to the impact of individual Rothschilds in multiple fields over the past 250 years.

Spanning war, politics and the industrial revolution, art, architecture and interior design, zoology, smuggling, and counter-terrorism and the ongoing struggle against entrenched anti-Jewish bigotry in different historical eras and places.

The Rothschilds reveals a truly new story of a very old family, making a great contribution both to history and our understanding of a dynasty that has shaped our world.

Trading Women's Rights in Transitions is about how women's rights are traded away by diplomatic actors directly in exchange for immediate political or other settlements, and indirectly in terms of being left off the international agenda with long-term consequences.

Trading Women's Rights in Transitions

A fresh interpretation of the Enlightenment that reshapes our understanding of political economy and its intellectual foundations. The origins of political economy are often told as a story of increasing certainty, rationality, and scientific progress. But what if its earliest thinkers were instead preoccupied with uncertainty? In Doubtful Knowledge, Richard Adelman offers a striking new interpretation of eighteenth-century political economy by tracing its roots to the skeptical philosophy of the European Enlightenment.Moving between Scotland and France, Adelman reveals how figures including David Hume, Adam Smith, Denis Diderot, Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, François Quesnay, and the Physiocrats developed a shared understanding of the limits of human knowledge. Rather than presenting markets or societies as systems that could be fully understood or controlled, they emphasized the complexity of the social world, the fallibility of human judgment, and the need for intellectual humility. Through close readings of major philosophical and political-economic texts, Adelman demonstrates that skepticism was not peripheral to early political economy but fundamental to its emergence. Challenging long-held assumptions about the history of economics and Enlightenment thought, Doubtful Knowledge reframes debates about commerce, governance, progress, and human nature.By bringing together intellectual history, literary studies, philosophy, and the history of political economy, Adelman offers a compelling account of how eighteenth-century thinkers understood knowledge itself--and why their questions remain relevant to contemporary discussions about economics, politics, and the limits of expertise.

We live in the Age of Shock, an era in which the interval between global crises has collapsed to zero and human biology is overwhelmed by an exponential torrent of data. Leaders who don't respond effectively face a stark reality: neither they nor their organizations will keep up for long.Through his own remarkable story of survival, Chaim Oren teaches leaders to abandon the outdated myth of resilience--'bouncing back'--and instead learn how to rise forward. Instead of trying to withstand shocks, he shows how to convert the kinetic force of continuous disruption into upward momentum. This is a clear-eyed, highly actionable blueprint that transforms wellbeing into the mission-critical, load-bearing infrastructure required to survive the biological and organizational friction of our time.

Contextualizing Art Markets

Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. After an extended historiographical introduction, the volume presents case studies and trends from 1860-1940, including: Jewish family businesses in Western Europe; the role of Jews as mediators of art from East Asia; the antisemitism and suspicion faced by Jewish dealers; Jews as theorists, exhibition makers and promoters of modern art ; and the geographical mobility and professional reinvention of Jewish dealers in times of economic and political crisis. With a wide variety of illustrations, including paintings, decorative arts, historic photographs and archival material, the volume adopts a mix of methodological approaches to analyse a key chapter in Jewish cultural history and in the history of the international art market. Includes Afterword by Charles Dellheim, author of Belonging and Betrayal: How Jews Made the Art World Modern (2021).

The Age of Commerce

“In these times when academics work more with data than doing fieldwork with companies and concrete experiences, I remember Chris Freeman's warning that “mathematical models conceal more than they reveal.” It is thus a breath of fresh air to find a book that goes deeply into the experience of several companies, observes in detail their process of acquiring technological capabilities and then generalizes and extracts lessons that are useful for companies, governments and students. Being obviously the result of years of patient research, this book will be useful reading for those engaged in learning to innovate in Mexico itself, in Latin America and across the Global South.” —Prof. Carlota Perez, Honorary Prof. in IIPP and in SPRU at UK, as well as an Adjunct Prof. in Estonia. Author of “Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital: The Dynamics of Bubbles and Golden Ages".Across Mexico’s most advanced manufacturing sectors, a quiet technological revolution is underway—one reshaping how leading firms build capabilities, innovate, and compete on the global stage. This book offers an inside look at how major companies are navigating the push toward digital transformation, revealing the real drivers of progress, the obstacles slowing adoption, and the strategic choices shaping their future. Through detailed case studies spanning automotive, electrical, food production, and beyond, it uncovers how firms are moving toward the technological frontier while balancing the demands of global value chains and the pressures of shifting environmental regulations. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of an economy advancing at two speeds. While large companies accelerate toward Industry 4.0, smaller enterprises struggle with outdated processes and limited resources, widening the technological divide. By tracing these divergent paths, the book illuminates both the promise and the risks of Mexico’s evolving productive structure—and points to how the strengths of the modern sector can help lift the rest. It is essential reading for scholars and policymakers seeking an in-depth understanding of Mexico’s innovation landscape.Gabriela Dutrénit

THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERThe world's criminals earn trillions every year. They keep almost all of it. Every effort to stop them has failed. Why? Join Oliver Bullough through the looking glass, voyaging through the dark heart of the global economy: where flows of dirty banknotes, designer goods and baby eels prop up illicit networks spanning from Miami to Shanghai - via, strangely, North Oxfordshire. Cryptocurrencies flow through ledgers that would look familiar to a fifteenth-century Florentine banker. Casinos, lottery tickets and government ignorance all power the merry-go-round of dirty money. And it all works brilliantly. Better than ever. There has never been a better time to be a criminal. It's time that changed.

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

In collaboration with JVL Media—a captivating exploration of why many high-performing Black business leaders attribute their transformational leadership qualities to their experiences growing up in the Black Church and how we can foster these skills in younger generations despite waning church attendance. The Black church in the U.S. has long been a “one-stop shop” for developing Black leaders, teaching them many of the qualities required to lead effectively in today’s ultra-competitive, digital, and swiftly transforming corporate world. Many high-performing Black leaders benefited from their experiences growing up in this cultural institution steeped in rich history.Merging cultural study with applied neuroscience and tenets of positive psychology, L. Michelle Smith dissect how these qualities are demonstrated by leaders across industries, from resiliency to their sense of undeniable purpose, their ability to build community and collaborative environments, the delivery and language of their speaking style to their unique leadership flair. She reveals how this historic institution has served as a timeless wellspring of leadership development, empowerment, and cultural preservation and ultimately, is Black leaders’ “secret sauce.”Call and Response also explores whether the Black Church will be able to continue to ingrain these skills in future generations. Smith examines how cultural shifts have resulted in a decline in church attendance, how online attendance has risen since the Covid pandemic, and finally, how Black leaders may—or may not—be passing these traditions down to their children.
