An exploration of pilgrimage, through nineteen breath-taking sites across the globe

Hurlock K: Holy Places / B

Holy Places

How Pilgrimage Changed the World

This edited collection investigates the religious roots of marriage and divorce in Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox nations across Europe and shows how their laws have evolved and diverged, from 1700 through to the present day. The eighteenth century was a pivotal period for the rules governing marriage and divorce, with the authority to establish and adjudicate on them shifting from church to state. The Formation and Dissolution of Marriage, Religious Roots, and Diverging Histories evaluates these historical developments, paying particular attention to the waxing or waning influence of religious institutions, values, and norms, and asking what other proposals for reform might have been on the agenda. As Volume 1 of A History of Family Law in Europe, this book examines how, and to what extent, marriage and divorce are regulated in the written texts of Europe's various religious traditions. The contributors analyse each system's teachings on marriage formation, marital impediments, and dissolubility, including ideas on the socially binding character of those precepts. Jurisdiction-specific chapters focusing on countries across Northern, Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe explore the regulation of marriage formation and dissolution in the context of religion and other cultural influences. The Formation and Dissolution of Marriage, Religious Roots, and Diverging Histories brings together the insights of an international team of leading marriage-law scholars from across Europe, and is a significant resource for scholars of family law, legal history, and the history of religion.

*Shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize* 'A fascinating exploration of the linkages between ancestral inheritance, diasporic belonging, and our climate future... I read it in one sitting, which took me on a moving and often unexpected journey' Aube Rey Lescure 'Part of me knew what the hungry ghosts wanted all along, what they still want. It is not vengeance. No, they want something else, but we refuse to listen. They want us to face up to our broken obligations.' Every spring during the Qingming Festival, people return to their home villages in China to sweep the tombs of their ancestors, making offerings of food and incense to prevent them from becoming hungry ghosts that could cause misfortune. Yet for the past century, a time ruptured by war and revolution, many tombs have been left unattended. Following a record year of wildfires, Alice Mah returns to her family's rice village in South China, and discovers that her ancestors are almost forgotten, and there are no tombs left to sweep. Instead, there are incalculable clan debts to be paid. Here Mah chronicles her journey from the rice villages of South China to her home in post-industrial England, through the Chinatowns of Western Canada where she grew up, to the isles and industry of Scotland where she now lives. As years pass and fires rage on, she becomes increasingly troubled by her ancestors' neglected graves. Her research on pollution gives way to growing eco-anxiety, culminating in a crisis of spiritual belief.A haunting blend of memoir, cultural history and environmental exploration, Red Pockets confronts the hungry ghosts of our neglected ancestors, while searching for an acceptable offering. What do we owe to past and future generations? What do we owe to the places that we inhabit?

Interventions: Rethinking the Nineteenth Century

Speculative endeavors describes the connections between speculation and minoritarian subjects and practices during the rise of capitalism in the US. Drawing on diverse historical perspectives, the volume challenges conventional historiographic narratives by spotlighting historic agents traditionally excluded from discussions of knowledge and capitalism. Through a series of meticulously researched essays on pedagogical practices, domestic manners, public court cases, and behind-the-scenes publishing habits, the book delves into the quotidian forms of knowledge on the fringes of nineteenth-century society. Each original contribution sheds light on how seemingly inconsequential narratives are part of the fabric of the period's burgeoning market economy and financial capitalism. Speculative endeavors is a call to reconceptualize our understanding of the past. Through its rigorous analyses of epistemic and economic practices and compelling narratives of marginalized agents, this groundbreaking collection invites readers to reconsider the intersections of power, privilege, and precarity in the turbulent times between the early republic and the Gilded Age.

'The best book on "story" that I have ever read' Jimmy McGovern 'A masterpiece . . . genius - funny and wise and occasionally profound' Billy Ivory A masterclass in telling stories - and how they shape our world - from the internationally renowned narrative expert To command narrative is to control a sometimes frightening power. What is it that turbocharges some tales, and how is it possible to harness that potency? John Yorke has revolutionised our understanding of story structure. In this new book he delves deeper - into how to put that structure to work in the world. Trip to the Moon takes us on a journey not just through drama and fiction but through politics, religion and non-western narrative, to seek out the role of story in all our lives, examining how to utilise its lessons to create life-changing tales - and, in a world aflame with conspiracy theories, to guard ourselves against their darker purpose too. Revealing the artful symmetry and underlying principles that connect Summer beach reads to Classical Chinese poetry, superhero flicks to Russian arthouse, and classical rhetoric to state propaganda, Yorke makes dazzling connections that show how stories have the power to transfigure the chaos of our existence into a new equilibrium, and make the world anew.

A history of immigration law as a legal discipline: how it has been constrained and unconstrained by developments in migration policy, international law, constitutional law and legal theory.

An Intellectual History of Migration Law and Policy c.1535-2020

The untold history of the extraordinary women who drove the modern dance movement and changed cultural narratives about sex, power and women's rights. The story of modern dance is a story of subversion - of forms challenged and hierarchies toppled in the pursuit of blazing artistic integrity. In Wild Grace, Sara Veale profiles nine of the pioneering women at the heart of this movement, from Isadora Duncan and Loie Fuller's fearless rejection of nineteenth-century paternalism to Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus's battles to recentre marginalised histories in the wake of the Second World War. Each of these dancers redefined the meaning of grace in their art and their lifestyle, conveying vital truths about what it means to walk the world as a woman. Veale brings to life the stories and artistry of these remarkable individuals and reveals how, in their refusal to conform, we can find urgent lessons for today.

A reframing of simplistic good-or-bad, black-or-white narratives about drugs.
What is a drug? The answer seems so obvious that the question is hardly worth asking. We can all agree that cocaine is a drug, or methamphetamine, or cannabis. But what about sugar? Caffeine? That heavy, sleepy feeling you get after eating a big portion of turkey at Thanksgiving? The extremes of experiences like sex and exercise or love and grief are created by the same consciousness-altering neurochemicals responsible for the highs and lows of a cocaine binge. What about your phone, or your toddler's iPad—can we be addicted to technology? Does using these devices make us "high"?
Drugs are slippery objects, difficult to define. Some make us feel good, others make us ill. Some take the form of pills, plants, or powders. Others, like the runner's high, require no physical substance at all. Much of what we think we know about drugs comes from a handful of well-used cultural narratives: drugs are either a public health menace, a social issue to be fixed, or an age-old criminal and legal problem. The rebels among us might even think of drugs as tools for creativity and artistic production. But despite the profound role drugs have played in human history and society, we rarely give any thought to what drugs actually are, and more importantly, what they do.
Reframing "drugs" as a wide variety of human experiences within a spectrum of altered consciousness, On Drugs weaves together cultural history, science, politics, personal anecdotes, and current events to ask why our frameworks for understanding drugs are so limited and how expanding them can transform our society's response to substance use.

'Equal parts gripping and scholarly... a timely book that gets to the heart of contemporary society' Katy Hessel, Sunday Times 'Utterly fascinating, beautifully written, scholarly yet entertaining' Joanna Lumley A pioneering study into how we interpret faces and what they reveal about us, from a world-renowned cultural historian What's in a face? The face is the only part of the body where all the senses come together and, over the course of human history, has come to represent who we are as individuals. We unlock our phones with facial recognition; we have our faces stamped in our passports; and although our faces may change over the course of our lives - whether through ageing, accident, illness or lifestyle - they remain a foundational marker of identity. In The Face, cultural historian Fay Bound-Alberti explores the ways humans have interpreted faces and how they have shaped our ideas of morality, social hierarchy, psychology and so much more, revealing some of the biases that inform our everyday lives. She charts how new technologies and cultural innovations have transformed our conception of selfhood over time - from the growth of portraiture in the Renaissance and the mass production of mirrors and photography in the nineteenth century, to twenty-first century developments, such as digital avatars and face transplants. Bringing together a wealth of fascinating research, interviews and illuminating personal narratives, Bound-Alberti probes beneath the surface to ask what our faces really say about us.

The culminating volume in the acclaimed Gotham series, Gotham at War delivers an unforgettable portrait of America's greatest city during history's most catastrophic conflict.

Gotham at War unveils the history of New York and the Second World War, from isolationism and factionalism to crucible of the American effort and the Allied Cause in a total and global war.

Kaleidoscopic and immersive, Gotham at War captures the full spectrum of New York and the war from every possible aspect-social, political, economic, and military. Even before the war had started street battles between New York's homegrown fascists and the workers' movement-allied with immigrants from all over the world and their children in the barrios of Gotham-played prelude. Set in the generation after race "scientists" based in the elite warrens of the Upper East Side championed and then imposed national immigration restriction, Gotham at War sees New Yorkers struggle to shake off the city's eugenic past.

Between 1933 and 1945, the city wrestled with itself, starting from the rise of Hitler through isolationism and growing interventionism; through Pearl Harbor and a full-throated war effort, when millions of American soldiers and sailors and billions of tons of materiel passed through New York's waterfronts to the warfronts. Along the way Mike Wallace's saga traces the transformation of New York, embracing garment workers and skyscrapers; the subway and Wall Street; gangsters and idealists; pols and reformers; nightclubs and boardrooms; Nazi infiltrators and FBI gumshoes; magazines and movies; shuls and cathedrals; every neighborhood, every industry, and all the peoples of the city swept up in a world that had caught fire.

Here is a portrait of a city and a war like no other. Gotham at War traces the transformation of New York from Depression-wracked mother of exiles to a front in the Second World War, and ultimately to the seat of the United Nations and a very contested "capital of the world."

Foundations of Fashion Studies

By the 1940s the New York fashion industry had come into its own. Sportswear, which had evolved from its origins to include simple casual wear for travel, leisure, town and country, was at the centre of this shift. Drawing on an array of sources, this book examines how New York sportswear evolved during the 1930s and 1940s to become the definitive American style. It reveals how designers such as Claire McCardell, Clare Potter and Tina Leser created a fashion identity for New York that was as dynamic and modern as the city itself. Author Rebecca Arnold interrogates the American ideal of athletic, long-limbed women and looks for the first time at how sportswear impacted and was impacted by ideas of patriotism and democracy, as well as its links to notions of cleanliness and hygiene, and to 1930s theories of body image and contemporary dance. As part of the Foundations of Fashion Studies series, this classic text now includes a new foreword by Emma McClendon and a new afterword and further reading list by the author.
