It does this against the backdrop of crises such as the USA Capitol attack on 6 January 2021, recent refusals to accept election results in various countries, and attempts to restrict the voting franchise, as well as longer-term trends such as the rise of populism and declining trust in political elites. The first substantive chapter examines representative democracy in theory, history and practice today. Taking the representative model as their point of departure, the subsequent chapters explore a range of themes in relation to this model. The contributions include timely reappraisals of democracy in countries, such as the UK and USA, with old, well-established democratic structures, as well as analyses of the state of democracy in regions such as Africa, Asia and South America, where democracy has had a more chequered history. An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

This book explores how COVID-19 represents an inflection point for re-thinking and re-making democracy across the English-speaking world in an age where states are facing a future of overlapping crises. Years after the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic started to unfold, have we yet learned the deep lessons essential to maintaining and improving democracy to meet crisis challenges? Produced with the benefit of distance from the most acute period of the pandemic, the book contextualises the COVID-19 crisis as revealing pre-existing vulnerabilities and intensifying challenges of governance, inclusion, and distrust, while also spurring democratic innovation and shifting the parameters for reform. Six national case studies - Australia, Ireland, Canada, Aotearoa New Zealand, UK and USA - reveal the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Viewed in the round, pandemic responses ranged from the chaotic to the internationally lauded, although even the latter have featured acute deficiencies in democratic practice, which underscores the need to gather the lessons learned. Yet, in all states, the public and political temptation to simply move on, in an act of communal forgetting and collective return to "normalcy," presents a real risk of failing to prepare for more democratic future crisis responses. This collection takes the long view, approaching its subject from multiple perspectives that examine the heterogeneity of the Anglosphere as an imagined democratic space. Taking a cross-disciplinary approach and bringing together both leading and emerging experts on democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law, this book powerfully combines the insights of retrospective analysis with future-focused contemplation of where our democracies are heading.

Democracy’s Power to Meet Tomorrow’s Polycrisis

Examines whether the rule of law can endure without its natural law and metaphysical foundations, arguing for a renewed, human-centered legal order grounded in objective moral principles and capable of addressing contemporary challenges such as AI, technocracy, and decolonization.
This provocative interdisciplinary volume addresses a mounting global crisis: the erosion of the rule of law in an increasingly secular and technological world. As societies move into what the authors call the "fourth era" of legal history, the rule of law is frequently reduced to a mere "toolkit" for elites or a "checklist" for bureaucratic efficiency, stripped of its deeper moral and transcendent roots. The book explores a vital question: can legal systems remain just when they are "truncated of transcendence" and disconnected from a higher moral order? By sifting through the legacies of legal giants like Lon Fuller and theologians like Karl Barth, the contributors argue that a purely procedural "inner morality" is insufficient to protect human dignity against authoritarian relapses or the cold logic of "technocratisation."

Drawing on the Christian philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd, specifically his concept of "sphere sovereignty," the authors propose a framework where diverse religious and secular traditions can collaborate without sacrificing their distinct identities. The text also tackles the controversial relationship between Natural Law and the 10 Commandments, debating whether positive laws should be grounded in "naturally knowable" truths or specific religious revelations in a pluralistic state. 
Looking toward the future, the authors issue a stark warning against the rise of Generative AI (GenAI) in legal adjudication. They argue that replacing human value judgments with machine-driven algorithms threatens to eliminate the discretion and relational interaction essential to true justice. To counter this, the book calls for educational reform and a shift toward "principled legal education" that prioritizes ethics, restorative justice, and a "facts first" approach. Ultimately, this work is a call to action for legal professionals, theologians, and the public to reclaim law as a framework for human flourishing-a "language of love" between the divine and the human that protects the vulnerable from the arbitrary exercise of power.
