Contributions to Economics

Empirical Perspectives on Institutions, Incentives, and Outcomes

The Economics of Crime and Justice

From the beginning of the twentieth century, leaders of the nascent Zionist movement saw statistics as a lever for building a Jewish state. More generally, other Jewish intellectuals, Zionists and non-Zionists alike, took part in the development of "Jewish statistics" or "Jewish social sciences," expressions designating all statistical studies and surveys carried out on Jewish populations. This book traces the social and economic history of this field of research up to the outbreak of the Second World War, analysing not only its institutionalization and gradual structuring but also its practical and theoretical objectives. Against the backdrop of rising antisemitism, Jewish statistics were intended to alert world public opinion, both Jewish and non-Jewish, and to coordinate the actions of the major Jewish relief organizations, especially between the wars. Such efforts did not exclude an academic ambition: like the German social sciences of the time, whose methods and organization they adopted, specialists in Jewish statistics sought to combine social reform and the social sciences and attempted to establish the field as an academic discipline in its own right, dedicated to the study of the material and social conditions of the Jews. This book will be of interest to readers in the history of economics and statistics and, more broadly, in Jewish history, Jewish studies and the political history of minorities in the modern era.

Counting Jews in the Early Twentieth Century

A History of Jewish Statistics

After the Shoah, unique region-based associations of Jewish survivors emerged, primarily in Israel but also in other countries. Despite their significant influence on community life and their diverse activities, these associations have received little scholarly attention.
Survivors from Leipzig first founded the Leipziger Jews Benevolent Association in New York, which was active in the 1940s and 1950s. This was followed in 1953 by the "Association of Former Leipziger in Israel" (Verband ehemaliger Leipziger in Israel).
This publication presents, for the first time, the key figures in these Associations and their contributions to commemorating the victims. Among other things, it highlights the old age home (Elternheim) they established, the news bulletin (Mitteilungsblatt) they published, and other extensive social and remembrance-related activities. It also examines the renewed connection to the City of Leipzig following the Peaceful Revolution and the contributions to the German-Israeli relations.

**THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER** Told in her own words, this is the incredible true story of one young woman's survival of Auschwitz and Belsen because she happened to play the cello. Although my head was shaved and I had a number on my arm, I had not lost my identity totally. I may no longer have had a name, but I was identifiable ... I was 'the cellist'. When eighteen-year-old Anita arrived at Auschwitz, she found herself plucked from the Nazi death machine by a twist of fate: she played the cello, and the camp orchestra needed a cellist. Now the last living survivor of the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra, this is her story told in her own words. Like so many German Jewish schoolgirls, Anita had been busy with her studies and ambitions when her everyday life began to turn by degrees into one of unimaginable horror. School was cancelled, her parents were summoned for deportation, and when she and her sister, Renate, attempted to escape to France, they were arrested and imprisoned. Through her sharp-etched memories, alongside family letters, photos, and other historical documents, Inherit the Truth leads us into one of humanity's darkest chapters, where we are forced to confront the fragility of the line between civilisation and barbarity. Marking the eightieth anniversary of her arrival in the UK after her release from Belsen concentration camp, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch's account of her and her sister's survival of both Auschwitz and Belsen is a testament to their remarkable courage, resilience, ingenuity and luck. This edition includes a new foreword from Philippe Sands, author of 38 Londres Street: On Impunity, Pinochet in England, and a Nazi in Patagonia.

HarperCollins American Classics

THE CLASSIC NATIONAL BESTSELLER"A wonderful, splendid book—a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future." —Howard FastIn celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, HarperCollins is proud to present this library of American classics drawn from our storied catalog. A People’s History of the United States, the brilliant national bestseller by historian Howard Zinn, chronicles American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official narrative taught in schools—with its emphasis on great men in high places—to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace.Known for its lively, clear prose and scholarly research, A People's History of the United States, is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of—and in the words of—America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles—the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality—were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance.Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. This edition also includes an introduction by Anthony Arnove, who wrote, directed, and produced The People Speak with Zinn and who coauthored Voices of a People’s History of the United States.

A BEAUTIFUL PACKAGE WITH FLAPS: Featuring French flaps and a unique vivid cover design, each book in the collection is published as a deluxe trade paperback that is a part of a stunning series look.

HARPER COLLINS AMERICAN CLASSICS: This series includes timeless novels, poetry, children’s books, and groundbreaking nonfiction that has shaped American thought, literature, and identity across generations.

AMERICA’S PUBLISHER: Since its founding in 1817, no American publisher has been so entwined in the history of American letters. This second edition of The Palgrave Handbook of Criminology and the Global South significantly expands, develops and draws together the rapidly growing research and theory about crime, punishment, security, prisons, policing, gender violence, environmental justice, island justice and justice innovations from, in the spatial and marginal global peripheries. It challenges the hegemonic bias in the production and dissemination of criminological knowledge and covers a huge scope of original research to develop a field of criminological inquiry inclusive of the experiences of the Global South. It includes Indigenous, critical, green, southern, feminist, counter-colonial, post-colonial and de-colonial approaches.
The handbook promotes diverse perspectives to develop concepts and theories that bridge global divides aiming to democratise criminological knowledges. It contains 86 chapters organised into eight themes and features contributions from both emerging and established scholars from around the globe. While colonialism's impacts are most visible in former colonies of the Global South, marginalised communities also exist in the Global North. The handbook, therefore, transcends geographical boundaries by incorporating theories from the margins.

*Shortlisted for Footnote x Counterpoints Writing Prize* A moving and personal memoir telling the story of a family grappling with trauma and identity in the wake of the Holocaust.A finely honed journey across time and place, affecting and powerful, and deeply relevant for our times.' - Philippe Sands'Simon Weisz's evocation of heartless mid-twentieth-century Europe, as public and private worlds so devastatingly collide, is compelling; his account of the jarring miscomprehensions between himself and his parents, as the evasions and false comforts mount up, is poignantly tragi-comic; and his staunchly unsentimental portrait of his glamorous mother - victim, monster, human - is masterly and deeply moving.' - David Kynaston'A beautifully written memoir full of startling vignettes... a vivid portrait of Holocaust survival, rich with postwar period detail. A compelling story' - Jewish Chronicle'Striking... a subtle, loving and poignant portrait.'- Matthew Reisz, Times Literary Supplement*********************For the first eighteen years of Simon Weisz's life his parents were at pains to keep their past concealed from him. All he knew for sure was that they had grown up in Hungary and that they had arrived in Britain after the Second World War. It was only as he reached manhood that they started to confide their carefully guarded secrets to him: that they were Jewish, and that his mother had experienced the appalling horrors of Nazi persecution. In conversations over the following decades, Simon's mother gradually, often reluctantly, revealed more of her past: from the growing oppression her family had had to endure in the late 1930s, to her deportation first to Auschwitz and then to Ravensbrück, to the brutal death march she withstood from the ruins of Berlin in 1945. As he pieced her testimony together, Simon came to realise how the memories she had fought so hard to suppress continued to haunt her in the form of terrifying flashbacks and moments of extreme frustration and anger. And he started to understand how her concealed trauma had, in turn, shaped his own development and the course of his life.Himmler's Curtains is both a visceral account of a Holocaust survivor's experiences, and an impressive study of the impact of suffering on two generations of a family. It also movingly reveals the high psychological price exacted by silence.

Himmler’s Curtains

This book reframes housing as essential safety infrastructure, demonstrating how safety, stability and recovery are shaped by place, community and connection. Through its focus on rural experiences, it offers a compelling analysis of the conditions that enable women and children to live free from violence without sacrificing the people, places and identities that sustain them. We can learn much from rural contexts in how we think about housing, safety and belonging, in our collective efforts to eliminate violence against women.-Professor Sarah Wendt, University of MelbourneThis Pivot book examines the complex relationship between domestic and family violence, homelessness and rural life in Australia. Challenging conventional understandings of homelessness, the book argues that housing is not simply a response to violence but a form of safety infrastructure. Bringing together theory, policy analysis and practitioner evidence from a rural homelessness service, it explores how violence, housing scarcity, cultural safety, visibility, trust, and service systems shape women’s pathways to safety. The book introduces the concepts of spatial safety, constrained agency, and intersectional rurality to explain why women are often forced to choose between safety and belonging. Offering important insights for researchers, policymakers and practitioners, it presents a systems-based framework for creating safer rural communities.Dr Helena Menih
is Senior Lecturer in Crime, Justice and Legal Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University, Australia. Her research focuses on domestic and family violence, gender-based violence, homelessness, family law, criminal justice, and the social and structural factors that shape vulnerability and exclusion. Drawing on both academic scholarship and professional practice, her work examines the intersections of violence, housing insecurity, justice systems, and social policy to inform policy, practice, and social justice outcomes. This book reflects her longstanding interest in the relationship between violence, housing, place, and women’s pathways to safety, recovery, and belonging in contemporary Australia.

Palgrave Advances in Sex Work Studies

This book explores the everyday lives of religious and spiritual sex workers in the United Kingdom and the United States. Challenging dominant assumptions that religiosity and sex work are inherently incompatible, it centres the voices of those whose experiences are routinely marginalised within dominant religious and secular discourse. Drawing on qualitative research, including participant-driven photographs, diaries, and in-depth interviews, the book examines how sex workers navigate belief, identity, stigma, intimacy, and belonging in their everyday lives. It reveals the complex ways religious and spiritual sex workers negotiate their occupational, religious, spiritual, familial, and personal identities, offering a nuanced account of lived religion and sex work. By focusing on micro-level experiences, the book moves beyond moral debates to illustrate how both religiosity and sex work are practised in ordinary moments and intimate spaces. In doing so, it challenges reductive portrayals of sex workers as either victims or sinners. Bridging sex work scholarship and the sociology of religion, this book will be of interest to academics, sex work support organisations, and policy makers seeking a more inclusive understanding of sex work and religiosity.
