This book provides a comprehensive account of the achievements of the economic regions set up in France after the First World War. It identifies exactly how they operated, as well as critical success factors such as effective leadership. Some recent historians have taken a very negative view of the part played by these regions in economic development. This new study instead argues that they made a significant contribution and laid the foundations for the regions created in France after 1945. The key areas which they identified: transport, power generation, and technical education, have remained the preoccupations of regional governments in France and elsewhere to this day. The author covers the needs of commerce and industry, but also agriculture and tourism. Based on fresh research using a wide range of primary sources, this book will appeal to economic historians, economists, and geographers, as well as historians with a particular interest in France.
Terence Cudbird gained his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2019 and is an Associate Member of the History Faculty there. He published an article on the French regions in French History in 2023.

<div>This book provides a comprehensive overview of police governance in England and Wales. This volume (II) covers reform and development of tripartite governance from 1979-2025. Volume I starts from the Anglo Saxon period. These volumes analyse the key mechanisms and procedures that have sought to provide for the control and accountability of police organisations to external bodies and the means through which the conduct and work performed by police personnel is regulated internally. They discuss and evaluate the key debates and developments that have underpinned changes to police governance and the social, economic and political context within which these have emerged. They bring together a wide variety of material that relates to historical and contemporary aspects of policing. They draw upon primary (as well as secondary) source material including the use of historical documents for the early chapters. They speak to students taking courses in criminology and criminal justice studies and also those specialising in policing and to practitioners.</div>

Als Exekutivorgan des staatlichen Gewaltmonopols muss die Polizei Bürgernähe, Transparenz, aber auch die Durchsetzungskraft des Rechtsstaates in sich vereinen. Der Anspruch an die Polizeibeamtinnen und Beamten muss also sein, in ihrem dienstlichen Alltag individuelle Ansichten und Werte hinter ihren beamtenrechtlichen Pflichten und insbesondere dem Neutralitätsgebot zurückzustellen. Die eigene Identifikation mit unseren demokratischen Grundwerten ist dabei unerlässlich.&nbsp;Allerdings traten in den vergangenen Jahren immer wieder Fälle von Diskriminierung durch Polizeibeamtinnen und Polizeibeamte zu Tage und legten die Befürchtung struktureller Probleme mit menschenfeindlichen Einstellungen nahe.&nbsp; Diese Arbeit beleuchtet deshalb die Einstellungen von Polizeibeamtinnen und Polizeibeamten mit Blick auf ihre politischen Überzeugungen,&nbsp;ihre Einstellung zu spezifischen Bevölkerungsgruppen und setzt diese ins Verhältnis zu möglichen Einflussfaktoren. Dazu gehören z.B. ihre Kontakterfahrungen im Umgang mit spezifischen Bevölkerungsgruppen und Merkmale der polizeilichen Arbeitswelt. Der Autor Maximilian Haendschke
 ist seit 2008 Polizeibeamter in Nordrhein-Westfalen und war u.a. als Einsatztrainer tätig. Er hat Kriminologie an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum studiert und erforschte polizeiliche Handlungsroutinen und Einstellungen im Berufskontext.

Corruption and anti-corruption have long been central public concerns in China, yet the organizational mechanisms through which corruption and anti-corruption operate remain poorly understood. This book takes bribery-offering by unit as its analytical entry point and combines a systematic analysis of 3,886 publicly released court records with in-depth interviews with judges, prosecutors, disciplinary and supervisory officials, and lawyers.
Focusing on visible court records, the book shows how corruption is produced and normalized at the organizational level, moving beyond explanations that reduce bribery to individual moral failure or market exchange. It introduces the perspective of “invisible corruption” to explore why certain bribery practices never enter judicial proceedings. By reconstructing the cognitive frameworks and professional reasoning of legal practitioners, it analyzes how organizational bribery is understood, categorized, and processed in judicial practice, and how legal decision-making is shaped by institutional constraints, political pressures, and organizational contexts. Situated at the intersection of sociology of law, organizational studies, and corruption research, this book offers new empirical and theoretical insights into China’s anti-corruption system.

Gentile Food Bans: Halakhah and the Fear of Intermarriage challenges long-standing rabbinic and scholarly assumptions about the origins of dietary restrictions in Jewish law.Re-examining halakhic texts across centuries, this book argues that the early prohibitions against consuming Gentile bread and certain cooked foods were originally rooted in concerns over forbidden ingredients - not intermarriage. It was only later, in Babylonia, that the rationale of preventing intermarriage, mišum ¿atnut (mishum hatnut), was introduced, particularly regarding Gentile bread, even when prepared under rabbinic supervision. Drawing on a wide range of sources - including biblical texts, Second Temple writings, tannaitic literature, and the Palestinian Talmud - this study shows that intermarriage was not a major societal concern or halakhic foundation in ¿Ere¿ Israel, whereas the Babylonian context likely prompted the shift in rationale.
