Studies of Organized Crime

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of clan crime and criminal families, with a particular focus on Europe. It examines the phenomenon through anthropological, criminological, and socio-political perspectives, with particular attention to kinship, migration, media framing, gender, intergenerational transmission, and institutional responses. Rather than treating ‘clans’ as fixed or culturally homogeneous entities, it explores the conditions under which kinship-based networks may become involved in criminal activities.
It covers a range of topics, including:

the concepts of families, clans, and tribes;

the emergence of ‘clan crime’ in European media and political discourse;

migration, marginalisation, and criminal opportunities;

kinship, loyalty, secrecy, and conflict regulation in criminal clans;

women’s roles and the intergenerational continuity of crime;

interventions and policies to prevent and tackle serious and organised crime in kinship-based networks across Europe.

Ideal for academics, policymakers, law enforcement professionals, and social services practitioners, this volume provides a nuanced and empirically grounded account of clan- and family-based crime in contemporary Europe.

The Intersection of Crime, Culture and Opportunities

Clan Crime and Criminal Families

*Shortlisted for Footnote x Counterpoints Writing Prize* A moving and personal memoir telling the story of a family grappling with trauma and identity in the wake of the Holocaust.A finely honed journey across time and place, affecting and powerful, and deeply relevant for our times.' - Philippe Sands'Simon Weisz's evocation of heartless mid-twentieth-century Europe, as public and private worlds so devastatingly collide, is compelling; his account of the jarring miscomprehensions between himself and his parents, as the evasions and false comforts mount up, is poignantly tragi-comic; and his staunchly unsentimental portrait of his glamorous mother - victim, monster, human - is masterly and deeply moving.' - David Kynaston'A beautifully written memoir full of startling vignettes... a vivid portrait of Holocaust survival, rich with postwar period detail. A compelling story' - Jewish Chronicle'Striking... a subtle, loving and poignant portrait.'- Matthew Reisz, Times Literary Supplement*********************For the first eighteen years of Simon Weisz's life his parents were at pains to keep their past concealed from him. All he knew for sure was that they had grown up in Hungary and that they had arrived in Britain after the Second World War. It was only as he reached manhood that they started to confide their carefully guarded secrets to him: that they were Jewish, and that his mother had experienced the appalling horrors of Nazi persecution.In conversations over the following decades, Simon's mother gradually, often reluctantly, revealed more of her past: from the growing oppression her family had had to endure in the late 1930s, to her deportation first to Auschwitz and then to Ravensbrück, to the brutal death march she withstood from the ruins of Berlin in 1945. As he pieced her testimony together, Simon came to realise how the memories she had fought so hard to suppress continued to haunt her in the form of terrifying flashbacks and moments of extreme frustration and anger. And he started to understand how her concealed trauma had, in turn, shaped his own development and the course of his life.Himmler's Curtains is both a visceral account of a Holocaust survivor's experiences, and an impressive study of the impact of suffering on two generations of a family. It also movingly reveals the high psychological price exacted by silence.

Palgrave Studies in Risk, Crime and Society

This book explores the nuanced experience of living in the risk society through the lived experiences of communities who have ‘dangerous’ offenders released into their midst. After locating the issue of risk within post-modern market fundamentalist societies, New Zealand is unpacked as a uniquely valuable jurisdiction to examine the effects of the risk society, given the speed and enthusiasm with which neoliberal political and economic reforms were taken up in this country. Three case studies are used to illustrate community experiences of the release of ‘dangerous’ offenders, after which the findings from these cases will be woven into the existing theoretical framework around risk. A particularly novel contribution of this text is the discussion of the role of colonisation in the way the risk society is understood and experienced, both historically and today. This book provides a useful contribution to the field of risk and add to the respective bodies of empirical research and theory. It will be a valuable text for those teaching on risk and subjects related to the risk society (within criminology, sociology, and law specifically); those exploring the impacts of neoliberalism/market fundamentalism; those looking at the impacts of offender release and post-sentence offender regulation on communities; and those interested in the development of New Zealand as an exemplar of a post-modern market fundamentalist society.Jordan Anderson
is Lecturer in Criminology at Swansea University, UK, and Adjunct Research Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Jordan has worked across the community, academic, and public sectors. Her research interests include indeterminate sentencing, post-prison regulatory measures, comparative criminology, and punishment. In 2020, she published the collection
Criminal Justice, Risk and the Revolt Against Uncertainty
alongside co-editor Emeritus Professor John Pratt.

World Histories of Crime, Culture and Violence

This book offers a pioneering, interdisciplinary analysis of gender-based violence in Eastern Europe from the early modern period to the present. Through case studies of various Eastern European countries, the volume examines how empire, war, nationalism, socialism, and post-socialist transformation shaped legal, medical, and state responses to violence against women. It reveals how women’s suffering was repeatedly silenced, normalized, or politicized, particularly in times of conflict and authoritarian rule. Challenging Western-centric perspectives, the book positions Eastern Europe as a vital site for understanding the historical roots of contemporary debates on gender, justice, and memory.

Violence Against Women in Eastern Europe

For more than two decades, Marwan Barghouti has been held in an Israeli prison cell, much of that time in total isolation. Yet his voice has never been forgotten.Described by the Economist as 'the world's most important prisoner' and often referred to as Palestine's Mandela, Barghouti remains the most widely supported Palestinian political leader. As a long-standing advocate of peace grounded in justice and equality, he has become an enduring symbol of unity and hope - even from behind bars.Unbroken brings together, for the first time, a powerful and intimate portrait of Barghouti's life and struggle for a free Palestine: private letters to his family, personal writings, correspondence with global public figures, press interviews, public statements and rare personal photographs.This is his story, in his own words. Unsilenced, unbroken.

Palgrave Studies in Discursive Psychology

This book offers a collection of detailed, empirically grounded chapters examining how ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, discursive psychology and membership categorisation analysis illuminate the interactional foundations of criminal justice. It draws on naturally occurring, recorded encounters across a broad range of settings, from emergency calls to police interviews, courtrooms, the forensic laboratory, youth justice, and mediation services.
Part of a two-volume project,
Analysing Conversations in Forensic Settings, Volume I
 illuminates the interactional dilemmas participants face in when negotiating fact, evidence and competence in real time across criminal justice settings and as they play out in global (social) media. The collection shows how statutory guidance, evidential requirements and decision‑making practices surface within interactional exchanges.

Designed for scholars in criminology, psychology, sociology and forensic linguistics, as well as practitioners seeking evidence‑based insights, this edited collection

establishes the methodological and analytical foundations for understanding criminal justice as an interactional accomplishment, setting the stage for how categories and identities are constructed, negotiated and contested in criminal justice work developed in Volume II.
Emma Richardson
is Senior Lecturer in Language and Social Interaction at Loughborough University, UK. She uses conversation analysis applied to real police emergency calls and investigative interviews to understand how reports of domestic and sexual violence are made and progressed through the criminal justice system.
Laura Jenkins
  is Senior Vice Chancellor Independent Research Fellow at Loughborough University, UK. Her expertise lies in recording and studying real conversations, using conversation analysis to generate new knowledge on human interaction across a range of everyday and institutional settings.

Accomplishing Justice in Practice

Analysing Conversations in Forensic Settings, Volume I

Palgrave Studies in Prisons and Penology

This book examines the role of the prison in the commissioning and delivery of theatre practice. It draws attention to discourses of publicly acceptable arts and other mechanisms of ‘soft power’ which shape access to prison theatre. Each chapter utilises engaging storytelling methods based on the authors own experience as a prison theatre practitioner to illustrate theory. The book explores understandings of the value of arts in prison and discuss how, in a neoliberal society, people in prison can be conceptualised as ‘deserving’ or ‘undeserving’ of these practices. It examines the role of the arts organisation in designing and delivering commissionable arts practice and in caring for both practitioners and participants. It also discusses the role of the university and the facilitator in delivering work that balances the often-conflicting agendas of the prison, the arts organisation and the participants alongside their own aims within a context of precarious employment. Finally, it examines the experience of participating in prison theatre, exploring incidents of care, interdependency and collective joy within the prison and assessing how, through the delivery of short-term and insecurely funded arts projects, prison theatre can produce experiences of both hope and harm.

Named a Best Book of 2025 by The New Yorker “Excellent and timely.” —The New Yorker “Informative, insightful and provocative, On Antisemitism couldn’t be more timely.” —The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “An immense contribution. . . . In tracing the evolving meaning of ‘antisemitism,’ [Mazower] demonstrates persuasively how we might turn it from a weapon back into a word. . . . Rigorous and lucid.” —The New Republic From one of our most eminent historians, a penetrating and timely examination of how the meaning of antisemitism has mutated, with unexpected and troubling consequences What are we talking about when we talk about antisemitism? For most of its history it was understood to be a menace from the political Right, the province of ethno-nativists who built on Christendom’s long-standing suspicion of its tiny Jewish population and infused it with racist pseudoscience. When the twentieth century began, the vast majority of the world’s Jews lived in Europe. For them, there was no confusion about where the threat of antisemitic politics lay, a threat that culminated in the nightmare of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Now, in a piercingly brilliant book that ranges from the term’s invention in the late nineteenth century to the present, Mark Mazower argues the landscape is very different. More than four-fifths of the world’s Jews live in two countries, Israel and the United States, and the former’s military dominance of its region is guaranteed by the latter. Before the Second World War, Jews were a minority apart and drawn by opposition to Fascism into an alliance with other oppressed peoples. Today, in contrast, Jews are considered “white,” and for today’s anti-colonialists, Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians has become a critical issue. The old Left solidarity is a thing of the past; indeed, the loudest voices decrying antisemitism see it coming from the Left, not the Right. Mazower clearly and carefully shows us how we got here, navigating this minefield through a history that seeks to illuminate rather than to blame, demonstrating how the rise of a pessimistic post-Holocaust sensibility, along with growing international criticism of Israel, produced a gradual conflation of the interests of Jews and the Jewish state. Half a century ago few people believed that antisemitism had anything to do with hostility to Israel; today mainstream Jewish voices often equate the two. The word remains the same, but its meaning has changed. The tragedy, Mazower argues, is that antisemitism persists. If it can be found on the far Left, it still is a much graver danger from those forces on the Right chanting “Jews will not replace us” in Charlottesville and their ilk. If we allow the charge to be applied too loosely and widely to shut down legitimate argument, we are only delegitimizing the term, and threatening to break something essential in how democracies function. On Antisemitism is a vitally important attempt to draw that necessary line.
