In three decades under the leadership of Kenneth Roth, Human Rights Watch conducted investigations in 100 countries to uncover abuses - and pressured offending governments to stop them. Roth has grappled with the worst of humanity, taken on the most ruthless oppressors of our time, and persuaded leaders from around the globe to stand up to their repressive counterparts. The son of a Jew who fled Nazi Germany just before the war began, Roth grew up knowing full well how inhumane governments could be. Als Exekutivorgan des staatlichen Gewaltmonopols muss die Polizei Bürgernähe, Transparenz, aber auch die Durchsetzungskraft des Rechtsstaates in sich vereinen. Der Anspruch an die Polizeibeamtinnen und Beamten muss also sein, in ihrem dienstlichen Alltag individuelle Ansichten und Werte hinter ihren beamtenrechtlichen Pflichten und insbesondere dem Neutralitätsgebot zurückzustellen. Die eigene Identifikation mit unseren demokratischen Grundwerten ist dabei unerlässlich.&nbsp;Allerdings traten in den vergangenen Jahren immer wieder Fälle von Diskriminierung durch Polizeibeamtinnen und Polizeibeamte zu Tage und legten die Befürchtung struktureller Probleme mit menschenfeindlichen Einstellungen nahe.&nbsp; Diese Arbeit beleuchtet deshalb die Einstellungen von Polizeibeamtinnen und Polizeibeamten mit Blick auf ihre politischen Überzeugungen,&nbsp;ihre Einstellung zu spezifischen Bevölkerungsgruppen und setzt diese ins Verhältnis zu möglichen Einflussfaktoren. Corruption and anti-corruption have long been central public concerns in China, yet the organizational mechanisms through which corruption and anti-corruption operate remain poorly understood. This book takes bribery-offering by unit as its analytical entry point and combines a systematic analysis of 3,886 publicly released court records with in-depth interviews with judges, prosecutors, disciplinary and supervisory officials, and lawyers.
Focusing on visible court records, the book shows how corruption is produced and normalized at the organizational level, moving beyond explanations that reduce bribery to individual moral failure or market exchange. It introduces the perspective of “invisible corruption” to explore why certain bribery practices never enter judicial proceedings. By reconstructing the cognitive frameworks and professional reasoning of legal practitioners, it analyzes how organizational bribery is understood, categorized, and processed in judicial practice, and how legal decision-making is shaped by institutional constraints, political pressures, and organizational contexts. Situated at the intersection of sociology of law, organizational studies, and corruption research, this book offers new empirical and theoretical insights into China’s anti-corruption system.

Despite the extensive research on trafficking from Nigeria to Europe, much of the existing knowledge remains victim-centred and rooted in the field of social assistance. This focus has been crucial in shaping our understanding of the anti-trafficking landscape—particularly in highlighting which aspects of victims’ experiences are prioritised by institutions when assessing claims for humanitarian protection. However, it has also resulted in a narrow perspective, largely limited to the narratives of individuals who have been officially recognised as victims. 
Rizzotti’s book reconfigures established understandings of trafficking by incorporating the voices of convicted women, alongside those of identified victims and key stakeholders. Her fieldwork illuminates the ways in which Nigerian women resist and navigate the constraints placed on their social and geographical mobility—constraints often reinforced by institutional labels such as "trafficker" and "victim"—in order to pursue individual and collective migration goals. Rizzotti demonstrates that both convicted women and identified victims frequently share similar experiences and aspirations, particularly in their efforts to overcome restrictive migration regimes and gendered expectations imposed on them as racialised migrants from the Global South.
