Throughout the history of the Western world, Jews have suffered various forms of exclusion, stigmatization, and discrimination that have forced them always to be aware of their very particular situation. The Jews became a community under siege and, as Shlomo Sand argues, Judaism was shaped by the hostile gaze of Christian civilization. While the forms of hostility endured by the Jews have varied over the centuries, it is impossible to understand twentieth-century anti-Judaism, or Jewish identity itself, without taking account of the sediments of mental hatred, fuelled by religious belief, which have survived the passage of time. From the beginning of the twentieth century, leaders of the nascent Zionist movement saw statistics as a lever for building a Jewish state. More generally, other Jewish intellectuals, Zionists and non-Zionists alike, took part in the development of "Jewish statistics" or "Jewish social sciences," expressions designating all statistical studies and surveys carried out on Jewish populations.This book traces the social and economic history of this field of research up to the outbreak of the Second World War, analysing not only its institutionalization and gradual structuring but also its practical and theoretical objectives. Against the backdrop of rising antisemitism, Jewish statistics were intended to alert world public opinion, both Jewish and non-Jewish, and to coordinate the actions of the major Jewish relief organizations, especially between the wars. Munir Ahmad Zia Rao serves as Deputy Inspector General of Police (Training), Punjab, Pakistan. Over the past twenty-five years, he has worked across operational and strategic policing domains, including counter-terrorism, criminal intelligence, and policy development. He has served with Pakistan’s National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA),&nbsp;Additional Director Anti Money Laundering Unit&nbsp; (FIA), and provincial police Training Directorate, contributing to policy development, law enforcement, national security, and community resilience initiatives. Dr. Rao holds a Ph.D. in Terrorism Studies and is recognized for his pioneering field research on suicide terrorism, including extensive interviews with failed suicide bombers and former militants. His academic work bridges empirical inquiry with critical theory, engaging with themes such as biopolitics, necropolitics, radical ideology, and de-radicalization. Beyond policing, he serves as a researcher, trainer, and policy advisor in the domains of counter-extremism, digital radicalization, and the development of sustainable peace narratives in South Asia.
