Love Is Strong as Death

A Biography of Franz Rosenzweig

According to Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics, today, approximately one in six Jews in Israel is a Haredi (ultra-Orthodox). The Bureau forecasts that if current demographic trends continue, by 2040, approximately one in four Israeli Jews will be a Haredi. By 2065, four in ten Israeli Jews will be Haredim, leading to a Haredi majority by the end of the century.In recent years, Israeli Haredi society has been the subject of intensive public and scholarly attention that focused on the concept of "Israelization" and implied it is going through a profound, irreversible transformation that is bringing it closer to integration into the Zionist majority.Based on field studies and textual studies, this edited volume offers critical reflections on the "Israelization" narrative and explores the strategies and mechanisms that have enabled Haredi society to go through changes without changing at its core and to steadily and massively grow. Written by an exceptionally diverse group of scholars, including Haredi, religious Zionist and secular Israelis, the book's chapters explore Haredi nuanced resistance to the majority society that has made it a fascinating case-study of fundamentalist navigation of modern and liberal realities. The chapters examine diverse facets of Haredi life, including the workplace, school curricula, women in politics, public health, college education, matchmaking, sexual abuse, prolonged singlehood, eulogies, cinema, celibacy, college education, and attitudes regarding Zionism. Appendices to the book include two in-depth and candid interviews with Haredi leaders.

Revisiting the “Israelization” Narrative

The Haredim

A new paradigm based on quantum probability that can model stock markets and price options—and also upends classical quantitative finance. In The Quantum Stock Market, David Orrell combines theory and new empirical findings to argue for a new approach to finance based on quantum probability. The main finding, a property called q-variance, may be unique in finance in that it was discovered as the result of a prediction, affects financial markets in general, has no tunable parameter, and has important consequences for a range of topics including the pricing of financial options. The property, which somehow eluded detection for over a century, has been verified by experts in the field. And the fact that it is incompatible with classical finance—which is perhaps why it went undetected—suggests that the field must be reinvented. The aim of this book is therefore nothing less than to initiate a paradigm shift in finance. As with any new work that challenges existing methods, the ideas have already received considerable pushback from a range of sources, including leaders in the field of finance, along with physicists skeptical of applying quantum probability outside its traditional domain. Written in an interdisciplinary style that mixes mathematical equations, data analysis, and informed comment on the field of finance, it should be read by anyone—including students, academics, and practitioners—who wants to be on the right side of a paradigm shift.

Practices of tracking and tracing have a long history, yet they are expanding in scale and scope in the digital age with important consequences for the accounts which shape our organizational and everyday lives. At a time when the benefits of traceability for assuring quality, maintaining security, and supporting knowledge-creation must be balanced with needs for privacy and accountability, Economy of Traces delivers an analysis of the implications of traceability for the many accounts we live by. Issues about why we trace, what we trace, and how we trace have become critical, and the book draws upon thinking in accounting, philosophy, and sociology to understand the different facets of traceability, including connectivity, organization, governance, risk, personhood, and knowledge generation. Through these themes, the book locates a key tension at the heart of our digital economy of traces; namely, that the more we are technically able to produce and track traces of human behaviour, the more fragile the traditional organizational forms of human oversight and accountability become. Economy of Traces develops a traceological theory of accounting to understand this tension and how tracking and oversight, while intertwined, are changing their mix in the digital age. In particular, audit trails which have traditionally underpinned human capacities for observation and governance, are being displaced and de-centered. Economy of Traces avoids both wholesale humanist critique of digital technologies on the one hand and uncritical celebration of their augmenting power on the other, in order to understand and theorize the dynamics of change in the organization of traceability and accounts production.

This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit.
