Uncommon Places: The Complete Works

Brodie's decade-long record of his transient American life, brimming with poignant stories of those he encountered along the wayMike Brodie's first monograph, A Period of Juvenile Prosperity, touched down more than decade ago, depicting his fellow rail-riders and drifters in a rebellious and wildfire pursuit of adventure and freedom. "Brodie leapt into the life of picture-making as if he was the first to do it," Danny Lyon wrote about the book in Aperture. Next came Tones of Dirt and Bone, a collection of earlier SX-70 pictures Brodie made when photography first led him to hopping freights, when he was known as "The Polaroid Kidd." And then Brodie seemed to disappear from the art world as suddenly and mysteriously as he'd first appeared. Maybe his vanishing was another myth. Maybe it was just a necessary retreat. "I was divorcing myself from all that," he says. "I was growing up. I was pursuing this other life." If A Period of Juvenile Prosperity was a cinematic dream, Failing is the awakening and the reckoning: a raw, wounded and searingly honest photographic diary of a decade marked by love and heartbreak, loss and grief. Here is the flip side of the American dream, seen from within; here is bearing close witness to the brutal chaos of addiction and death; here are front-seat encounters with hitchhikers and kindred wanderers on society's edges, sustained by the ragtag community of the road. Failing often exists in darkness but is tuned to grace. Brodie's eye stays forever open to the strange and fleeting beauty that exists in forgotten places--the open country and the lost horizons that sweep past dust-spattered windows in a spectral blur. Michael Brodie (born 1985) is the author of A Period of Juvenile Prosperity (2013) and Tones of Dirt and Bone (2015). He lives with his girlfriend in Biloxi, Mississippi, where the railroad is never far, just hidden in the trees from view. Unseen, it rattles the windows and floors of their apartment every time a train passes through.

Michael Brodie: Failing

Cara Romero's first monograph, Panûpünüwügai (Living Light) explores the artistic practice of the celebrated Chemehuevi photographer and features written contribution from 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo.Throughout her renowned creative practice, Romero has brilliantly challenged dominant narratives of Indigenous decline and erasure, disrupting preconceived notions about what it means to be a Native American. Her sophisticated images simultaneously acknowledge the injustices of colonialism while centering the humanity and vitality of her Indigenous collaborators, inviting audiences to engage in transformative dialogues. Personal, handwritten notes and drawings by the artist reveal process and concept development, helping readers connect with her creativity and studio practice.This book will accompany Romero's first solo exhibition of the same name, on view at the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College in 2025 and traveling to additional venues. Romero's award-winning work is included in numerous public and private collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim Museum, Amon Carter Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, and Forge Project Collections.&nbsp;

Cara Romero: Panûpünüwügai (Living Light)

Tokyo After Dark&nbsp;documents photographer Eren Sarigul's decades-long love affair with Japan's capital city and its vibrant culture at night. Eren's love for photography sprung to life following a 2014 trip to Japan. Since that first 2014 trip, Eren has traveled to Japan from his native London every year, capturing the people, sites, and feelings that make Tokyo such a magical city.Eren's upbringing as a Londoner from an ethnic background who grew up in a working-class south London council estate exposed him to a myriad of different cultures. Despite feeling like an outsider, he was accepted into the melting pot that is London, and this feeling of being "outside" drove him to think outside the box and beyond the norms. Eren brings this desire and drive to his photography, capturing the feeling of being an outsider looking in through his images of people and places around Tokyo.&nbsp;Eren's long-standing appreciation of Japan’s geography, its cultures, and its people are evident on every page.

Across Tokyo

Her second monograph with Radius, Victoria Sambunaris: Transformation of a Landscape shares the nuance and majesty of the artist’s practice in a large-scale book format.Based in New York, Victoria Sambunaris structures her life around a photographic journey traversing the American landscape for several months per year. Equipped with a 5×7-inch field camera, a video camera, and research material, she crosses the country alone tenting on top of her car. Her project-based photographs document the continuing transformation of the American landscape with specific attention given to expanding political, technological, and industrial interventions.Part of her ongoing, twenty-four-year series “Taxonomy of a Landscape,” this book encompasses the past decade of work, including collected ephemera that form the essential and incidental elements of her practice as a photographer and researcher. Also featured are archival documentation of experiences and observations on the road, such as snapshots, maps, road logs, journals, geology and history books, mineral specimens, and artifacts.

Victoria Sambunaris: Transformation of a Landscape

Covering more than a half century of dramatic social and political change, Ressler’s Photographs is an important document that, through vivid images and an engaging narrative, provides insight and meaning to the complex world we live in today. Global in scope, but with a focus on the Americas, the book begins in the tumultuous 1960s just one year after the Summer of Love (1967), when the author was a young college student who photographed the counterculture, street life on New York City’s gritty Lower East Side, and icons such as Andy Warhol and later Nina Simone, among others. The book then catapults us into a First Nation reserve in Quebec, Canada, as we follow Ressler’s trajectory from novice ethnographic image-maker to mature photographic artist––a career that parallels and comments on the growth of financial empires and consumerism as well as shifting trends in photography itself. 
Susan Ressler Photographs: 50 Years, No End In Sight is an impressive retrospective that traces over fifty years of artistic development. It includes six major bodies of photographic work introduced in her own words, complemented by two interpretive essays: one by Eve Schillo on Ressler’s California work, and the other an afterword by Mark Rice. Although some of the images appear in Ressler’s previous Daylight monographs (Executive Order and Dreaming California), many are published here for the first time. These include “At Owner’s Risk” (her Canadian First Nation photographs), “From Analog to Digital” (an account of photography’s transition from analog film to digital media), and “Beyond Borders” (work from Europe, Asia, and Israel). The book ends with “American Stories,” including South America and the export of US culture abroad, before Ressler comes home to Taos, New Mexico, where she lives and continues to make photographs today.

The 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act set the backdrop for racial discrimination that has seeped into countless immigrant families. Light, Sand, and Sea

Preserving the decorative richness and symbolism of a rare example of Hispano-Muslim sculptureThe Courtyard of the Lions in the Alhambra, built by order of Muhammad V between 1362 and 1391, is the culmination of Nasrid architecture. Adrian Tyler's black-and-white photographs depict the lions before and after their 2020 restoration, providing a cache of archaeological images reminiscent of 19th century photography.

This facsimile of Lee and Roland's photograph albums shows their summer holiday together, as portrayed in the feature fi lm Lee, and demonstrates the freedom and friendship of these artists as the Second World War looms on the horizon.
