Small garages and service stations are a vital - but fast disappearing - part of Britain's automotive landscape. Often independently owned and sited in idiosyncratic buildings, they are rightfully celebrated and sensitively documented in this essential book. You might use a local garage to change a tyre or replace your exhaust, but when was the last time you pulled over and took a good look at the building itself? In the spirit of Ed Ruscha's Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963), photographer Philip Butler has done just that. Over six years, he's travelled the length and breadth of Britain photographing these diverse, eccentric and idiosyncratic buildings. As motoring became popular in the early 1900s, the need for mechanical expertise to service, repair, refuel, and sell vehicles soared - and the 'garage' was born. From the Mock-Tudor fad of the 1920s via the Streamline Moderne of the 1930s, to the simple Modernist rationalism of postwar Britain, each era has produced a distinct automotive architecture. With the introduction of the Ministry of Transport (MOT) vehicle test in the 1960s, demand accelerated still further. A diverse array of structures was utilised - churches, cinemas, railway arches, fire stations, shops, factories - all proved versatile enough to find second lives as garages. As the era of the combustion engine draws to a close, Butler's enchanting photographs of 226 Garages and Service Stations document the charm and personality of these survivors of the petrol age.

A colourful photography book on this visually stunning vernacular artform, the images painted onto these trucks and tuks are a phenomenon, giving a unique insight into the rich cultural traditions of the Indian subcontinent. White stallions and exotic birds frolic around a waterfall, glamorous Bollywood stars sing, a sunset-silhouetted couple bathe in the ocean - such are the images that adorn the trucks and tuks of the Indian subcontinent. These utilitarian vehicles provide a fertile canvas for the vernacular artists whose colour-saturated creativity covers every spare surface. Over four years, photographer Christopher Herwig (author of the Soviet Bus Stops series and Soviet Metro Stations) travelled 10,000 kilometres in his quest to record this overlooked artform. He has documented the characteristics of each region - from Pakistan in the north, where intricately painted trucks often have a curved wooden peak at the front, symbolizing a princess' tiara; to Sri Lanka in the south, where tuk tuks might equally be painted with holy deities or the Joker from Batman. The designs reflect a driver's identity, faith and aspirations and span a bewildering range of themes: ideals of masculinity might be intertwined with expressions of love and longing, while bold typography urges drivers to blow their horns or promotes a campaign for the education of girls. Sadly, as a result of government directives, alongside the proliferation of cheap, mass-produced decorations, this vibrant cultural expression is in decline, making this project all the more vital.

Trucks and Tuks

An anthology of the four seminal photobooks that form the foundation of Daido Moriyama's photographic career: Japan, A Photo Theater, A Hunter, Farewell Photography and Light and Shadow. Once regarded as the most challenging and radical of the photographers to emerge from Japan in the post-war period, Daido Moriyama is now accepted as an international figure. His stream of publications, most notably his ongoing magazine Record, have enabled his original vision, born out of the backstreets of Tokyo, to be cast worldwide. In this anthology, renowned author, curator and editor Mark Holborn presents the four books that underpin Moriyama's artistic journey, with the photobook at the very core of his creative practice. The featured photobooks - Japan, A Photo Theater, A Hunter, Farewell Photography and Light and Shadow - span the fifteen years during which Moriyama honed his techniques and unveiled his distinctive vision and stand as exemplars of some of the most daring photographic publishing ventures in the history of the medium. Rooted in the complexities of Japan during a transformative era from 1968 to the early 1980s, they offer profound insights into the country's evolving landscape. Harmonizing seamlessly with Moriyama's own aesthetic sensibilities, the book's design includes excerpts from Moriyama's diaries, journals and memoranda, providing intimate glimpses into his creative process. As with all Moriyama publications, this photobook is eagerly anticipated by a devoted following, reflecting the enduring importance of his work.

Moriyama: Quartet

In a new body of work, a critically acclaimed photographer retraces Berenice Abbott's 1954 photographic journey along the Eastern Seaboard, documenting dislocation, loss, and a shifting American dream. In 1954, American photographer Berenice Abbott set out to document the historic US Route 1, already predicting seismic changes to small towns and major cities along the route brought by the rapidly expanding Interstate Highway System. Spanning all thirteen original colonies and beyond--from Fort Kent, Maine, to Key West, Florida--US Route 1 formed over the course of three hundred years from connecting sections of what was once known as the Atlantic Highway. Inspired by Abbott's acute and poetic observations on life along Route 1 and on the seventieth anniversary of her project, Florida-based photographer Anastasia Samoylova ventures on her own journey to revisit those communities forever transformed by the interstate. Working in color and black and white, Samoylova provides a closer look at the American landscape irreversibly altered by the unrelenting expansion of industry, commerce, and development, as well as the displacement and tenacity of people and wildlife.Copublished by Aperture and Norton Museum of Art.

Covering more than a half century of dramatic social and political change, Ressler’s Photographs is an important document that, through vivid images and an engaging narrative, provides insight and meaning to the complex world we live in today. Global in scope, but with a focus on the Americas, the book begins in the tumultuous 1960s just one year after the Summer of Love (1967), when the author was a young college student who photographed the counterculture, street life on New York City’s gritty Lower East Side, and icons such as Andy Warhol and later Nina Simone, among others. The book then catapults us into a First Nation reserve in Quebec, Canada, as we follow Ressler’s trajectory from novice ethnographic image-maker to mature photographic artist––a career that parallels and comments on the growth of financial empires and consumerism as well as shifting trends in photography itself. 
Susan Ressler Photographs: 50 Years, No End In Sight is an impressive retrospective that traces over fifty years of artistic development. It includes six major bodies of photographic work introduced in her own words, complemented by two interpretive essays: one by Eve Schillo on Ressler’s California work, and the other an afterword by Mark Rice. Although some of the images appear in Ressler’s previous Daylight monographs (Executive Order and Dreaming California), many are published here for the first time. These include “At Owner’s Risk” (her Canadian First Nation photographs), “From Analog to Digital” (an account of photography’s transition from analog film to digital media), and “Beyond Borders” (work from Europe, Asia, and Israel). The book ends with “American Stories,” including South America and the export of US culture abroad, before Ressler comes home to Taos, New Mexico, where she lives and continues to make photographs today.

From Augusta to Bristol, Brunswick and beyond, Johansson's chronicle of Maine combines humor and emotion with a sense of place In 2023, Swedish photographer Gerry Johansson (born 1945) roamed the state of Maine with a Rolleiflex, curious to make new pictures in a region of America he first encountered in the work of Paul Strand five decades ago--he found Strand's views of New England "boring" at the time--and also wondering, "Why is American photography so focused on the west?" Johansson's Maine echoes the formal restraint of his earlier books, notably American Winter, Spanish Summer, Meloni Meloni and Pontiac, sequencing nearly 200 black-and-white duotones alphabetically by their oddly poetic Northeastern town names (Bath, Friendship, Purgatory, etc). Somehow, none of the Maine pictures draws more attention than any other, and the flawless and playful compositions never seem to repeat. As in all of Johansson's work, endlessly inventive arrangements of architecture and landscape orient the viewer in a specific geographic and cultural place while generously sharing his way of seeing, walking and thinking with a camera.

Family Amnesia&nbsp;tells the story of the artist's great grandfather, grandfather and parent’s migration through collages, archival images, photographs, documents and historical anti-Chinese propaganda illustrations. The 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act set the backdrop for racial discrimination that has seeped into countless immigrant families. From operating a small hand laundromat, to working long hours for low wages in garment factories, generations of Yu’s family have worked tirelessly to overcome these obstacles.&nbsp;While the artist’s family migration story is shared by many Asian Americans this book provides an evocative first hand testimony of the challenges posed by racial discrimination.
