The Wonderful World that Almost Was

The first bilingual monograph dedicated to Sophie Rivera, a trailblazing artist at the center of feminist engagement, Latine art, and contemporary US photography.Renowned for her portraits of everyday Puerto Ricans taken from her home studio in Upper Manhattan, Sophie Rivera (1938-2021; born in New York) began her career in the 1970s, becoming part of a coalition of artists who sought to counter negative depictions of Latinos in US popular culture. These portraits, later exhibited under the title Revelations for a public art presentation in the New York City subway, as well as her street photographs, abstract cityscapes, graffiti art images, and experimental self-portraits, bolstered Rivera's standing as a trailblazing artist who engaged with feminist and political consciousness. Sophie Rivera: Double Exposures brings together photographs, contact sheets, and artist statements with vivid scholarship that place Rivera at the center of Latine and feminist art and within the history of contemporary photography in the US. Double Exposures is published on the occasion of the first museum survey dedicated to Sophie Rivera, presented by El Museo del Barrio, New York, in 2026.

Blazing Light&nbsp;is&nbsp;published to coincide with Mimi Plumb’s first solo museum exhibition of the same name (High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia) and brings together three of her major bodies of work—The White Sky, Landfall and The Golden City,&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Reservoir—that collectively contemplate the anxieties of American life in the waning years of the Cold War and its aftermath. In the 1970s, Plumb began photographing as a teenager in the San Francisco suburb of Walnut Creek at a time marked by rapid development of the land coupled with global political and economic instability. Her early artistic life was defined by a burgeoning awareness of global warming, the AIDS epidemic, violent conflict in Latin America and the Middle East, and a looming threat of nuclear war. This atmosphere attuned Plumb to the evidence of such forces in the land, the built environment, and the ways people carry themselves and relate to one another—concerns that continue to abide in her work to this day. Plumb’s photographs foreground the presence of people, lending her images a greater degree of pathos and even notes of humorous absurdity. Though the artist embraces realism, her photographs are more ambient and enigmatic, inviting conjecture rather than providing documentary information. The publication will include texts by Gregory Harris, curator of the exhibition; Karen Irvine, chief curator and deputy director at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, IL; and Lauren Richman, curator of photography at the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL. Plumb's work is held in numerous public collections, including the High Museum of Art (GA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MA), Yale University Art Gallery (CT), and the Deutsche Börse Collection (Germany). The&nbsp;Mimi Plumb: Blazing Light&nbsp;exhibition will be on view at the High Museum of Art from February 6-May 5, 2026. The exhibition will then travel to the Johnson Museum at Cornell University, NY (summer 2026), the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, FL (winter 2026/2027), followed by the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, IL (spring 2027).

The perfect primer on renowned Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia. Born in Palermo, Letizia Battaglia (1935-2022) took up journalism as a single mother, but discovered that it was easier to sell articles if she could also supply photographs. She became a news photographer for L'Ora, a Sicilian daily newspaper that took a stand against the Mafia and its political and economic connections. Between 1976 and 1991, she was a witness to some of the bloodiest events in Italian history, including the killing of judges, police officers and politicians. While these images brought her international recognition, she strongly opposed the label of 'Mafia photographer' and believed that her aim was to seek out life. She built up a many-sided portrait of her Sicilian homeland, developing a special sensitivity to women, girls and young children, and a deep empathy with those living in poverty. Her work stands as proof that both joy and suffering are part of the experience of being in the world.

Combining photomontage with portraiture and scenes of Hmong American communities, Her mixes the real with the artificial in search of a diasporic identityRooted in the experience of her Hmong community and shaped by family lore passed down by her elders, Pao Houa Her (born 1982) investigates the potential of photography to create nonlinear narratives exploring construction. She brings together formal and vernacular photographic languages manipulated into light boxes, wheat-pasted images and videos. Her's adoptive homes of Minnesota and California become stand-ins for Laos; plastic florals replace living tropics; ersatz and real meld together. The Imaginative Landscape traces Her's ever-deepening exploration into concepts of home and belonging. With essays and an artist interview, this catalog explores Her's work in genres of portraiture, landscape, still life and the vernacular, as she photographs herself and the people and places around her through the tinted lens of diasporic longing. This book was published in association with San José Museum of Art.

Hal Fischer: Seminal Works collects Gay Semiotics with Fischer's rarely seen early photography and features a range of essays that provide vital perspectives on the enduring themes of his work.In the late 1970s, as gay men in San Francisco were enjoying a new era of liberation following the Stonewall Riots, Hal Fischer made a signal photo-text project that categorized denizens of the Castro and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods by social type. Sly and systematic, Fischer's Gay Semiotics portrays the sartorial codes of queer street style--earrings, handkerchiefs, jeans, or leather--that broadcast a range of desires to potential sexual prospects. Fischer annotated his black-and-white photographs with commentary about gay archetypes, such as the jock or the hippie, with an occasional sense of irreverence. The series was published as an artist's book in 1978 and quickly became an influential record of a libertine era before AIDS, the rise of internet dating apps, and tech industry-accelerated gentrification transformed queer life in San Francisco forever. Koudelka: Diaries offers insight into the mind of this iconoclastic Czech photographer renowned for projects on the Roma, the 1968 Soviet invasion of Prague, and the impact humans have had on the landscape. Over the course of fifty-plus years Josef Koudelka has kept nearly seventy journals. Distilled now into one richly illustrated volume, Koudelka: Diaries offers a look inside the mind of the iconoclastic Czech photographer renowned for his life in exile and a career that has included seminal projects on the Roma, legendary coverage of the 1968 Soviet invasion of Prague, and volumes on the often-devastating impact humans have had on the landscape. Revealed throughout the book are Koudelka's thoughts on photographers, such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, and editors, curators, and friends, including Robert Delpire and Anna Fárová, along with notes on his legendary projects. Facsimiles of actual diary pages and images by the photographer, including self-portraits, lend the volume an immediacy and authenticity. Josef Koudelka: Diaries provides a perfect companion to Josef Koudelka: Next (2023), the visual biography by Melissa Harris, editor at large at Aperture, and has been brought together by the same creative collaborators: designer Ales Najbrt and translators Derek and Marzia Paton.

The first major biography on artist Louise Bourgeois brings the life and work of an iconic twentieth-century artist into sharp focus &nbsp; Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. She is known for a body of work that spans sculpture, painting, and printmaking but eludes any aesthetic classification. Her life and art were so intertwined that it is often difficult to tell them apart. In her own words: “Sculpture is the body. My body is the sculpture.” &nbsp; Marie-Laure Bernadac’s biography of Bourgeois traces the career of a great artist, her training, and her influences, as it tells the story of an exceptional woman’s life.
