To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, never has so much pornography been available to so many people for so little. This is the story of how the online adult industry has plummeted from its lofty heights of the late 1990s, when a savvy Web entrepreneur could charge premium prices to thousands of eager subscribers. It is also the story of how the law has completely failed to keep pace with the technological innovations that boosted and then savaged the online adult industry. It concludes by analysing the social impact of virtually unlimited pornography of every description, available to all ages at the click of a button. Useful reading for the general reader and for students and researchers involved with business strategy, the history of technology, cultural studies, sexuality, media studies and technology more generally.

The Pornography Business

The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series

What lies underneath digital platforms—their invisible architecture and governance that determine everything visible. Every time you unlock your phone, stream a show, or start your car, you’re entering a world shaped by thousands of engineering decisions you’ll never see. Most platform conversations fixate on their visible canopy—business models, user experience, competitive strategy—the “leaves,” in a sense. Platforms by Amrit Tiwana excavates their roots. The book begins with a simple DNA test that separates authentic from faux platforms, then traces the forces turning tractors, pacemakers, and elevators into platforms. Using the platform trinity, the author explores principles behind why platforms behave so differently, why superior technology doesn’t always win, and why—unlike products that reach a final form—platforms never stop evolving. From there the book explains platforms’ two hidden root systems: The first system, architecture, shows how Lego-like “modular” design, frozen interfaces, and prefab building blocks let thousands of outsiders contribute pieces that snap into colossal systems. The second system, governance, describes where architecture confronts human behavior. Elegant architecture flails with poor governance, so both demand discipline.

A Psychological Exploration of Women and Gender

Women's Lives

A leading psychologist and philosopher challenge the shortcomings of rational choice theory-and propose a new framework for understanding decision-makingFor many decision scientists, their starting point-drawn from economics-is a quantitative formula called rational choice theory, allowing people to calculate and choose the best options. The problem is that this framework assumes an overly simplistic picture of the world, in which different types of values can be quantified and compared, leading to the "most rational" choice. Behavioral economics acknowledges that irrationality is common but still accepts the underlying belief from economics of what a rational decision should look like.In this book, Barry Schwartz and Richard Schuldenfrei offer a different way to think about the choices we make every day. Drawing from economics, psychology, and philosophy-and both inspired by and challenging Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow-they show how the focus on rationality, narrowly understood, fails to fully describe how we think about our decisions, much less help us make better ones. Notably, it overlooks the positive contribution that framing-how we determine what aspects are most important to us-contributes to good decisions. Schwartz and Schuldenfrei argue that our choices should be informed by our individual "constellation of virtues," allowing for a far richer understanding of the decisions we make and helping us to live more integrated and purposeful lives.

Now in a fully revised and updated new edition, Sport, Exercise and Social Theory is a concise and engaging introduction to the key theories that underpin the study of sport, exercise, and physical activity in society.Structured around C. Wright Mills's concept of the sociological imagination, the capacity to connect personal troubles to public issues and individual biographies to broader social structures, the book shows how theory can be used to debunk many of our traditional assumptions about sport and exercise, and how sport and physical activity can be a powerful window through which to observe and understand wider society. Designed to be used by students who have never studied sociology before, the book provides training in critical thinking and helps students develop intellectual skills that will serve them throughout their professional and personal lives. This new edition includes significantly expanded coverage of feminism and theories related to gender, including new material on the Manosphere, intersectionality, and the trans athletes debate, as well as completely new chapters on nationalism, decolonial perspectives, and ableism and disability. Every chapter includes updated cases and examples, from sportswashing and athlete activism to digital fan cultures, artificial intelligence, and the controversies around sporting mega-events, drawing throughout on the author's own internationally recognised research. Useful pedagogical features include 'Stop and Think' boxes, biographical notes on key theorists, and chapter summaries. This book is an essential companion to any course on sport and society, the sociology of sport, or the contemporary uses of social theory.Additional resources for instructors accompany this book, including classroom discussion topics and exercises, plus exam questions. An Introduction

Sport, Exercise and Social Theory

Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This publication is based upon work from COST Action CA20105 on Slow Memory, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.

Theory and Practice for Transformative Change

Slowing Down Memory Studies

Are milk and dairy products still fit for the 21st century? As concerns about animal welfare, climate change and human health reshape our food systems, milk has become one of the most contested staples on our tables. In M*lk, Orla Shortall investigates the dairy dilemma by exploring the hidden realities of how milk is produced today. Travelling between farms across Britain, Ireland, Europe and North America, she meets dairy farmers and their cows, examining the challenges facing contemporary dairy farming, the rise of veganism and plant-based alternatives, and emerging ideas about how humans and cattle might coexist differently. Combining sharp wit with compassionate reporting and rigorous research, Shortall invites readers to reconsider their own relationship with dairy, and to ask what a more sustainable and ethical future for milk might look like.

This wide-ranging intellectual and media history traces China's emergence as a modern state in which boundaries blur between art and design, education and psychological conditioning. Tracking the parallel development of set design and social engineering from the 1920s to the 1960s, Background Matters examines the concept of huanjing (environment), a neologism introduced at the turn of the twentieth century that evoked heated intellectual debates and inspired frenzied aesthetic experimentation. Weihong Bao shows how efforts to reshape the mind consolidated the idea and art of environment by advancing a new theoretical notion of set design: both as aesthetic organization across film, theater, radio, and television and as social experimentation in worldmaking across geopolitical and transnational contexts. Inventive and breathtaking in scope, this book radically rethinks environment not as an external object but as the nexus of mind, medium, and society.

Background Matters: Volume 9

Contextualizing Art Markets

Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. After an extended historiographical introduction, the volume presents case studies and trends from 1860-1940, including: Jewish family businesses in Western Europe; the role of Jews as mediators of art from East Asia; the antisemitism and suspicion faced by Jewish dealers; Jews as theorists, exhibition makers and promoters of modern art ; and the geographical mobility and professional reinvention of Jewish dealers in times of economic and political crisis. With a wide variety of illustrations, including paintings, decorative arts, historic photographs and archival material, the volume adopts a mix of methodological approaches to analyse a key chapter in Jewish cultural history and in the history of the international art market. Includes Afterword by Charles Dellheim, author of Belonging and Betrayal: How Jews Made the Art World Modern (2021).

American Crossroads

In The Southern Question, Jordan T. Camp considers the challenges of organizing against rising fascism. He turns to Antonio Gramsci's 1926 essay, "Some Aspects of the Southern Question" to do so. The essay compels organizers to overcome divisions and forge alliances across spaces of difference. Before it was ever published, Gramsci was arrested and confined to a fascist prison. A century later, Camp revisits his theory of alliance building across spaces of uneven capitalist development. He expands Gramsci's insights into different souths, including the Jim Crow American South, apartheid South Africa, and the neocolonial Caribbean. In each site, he centers radical theorists such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Angela Y. Davis, Ruth First, and Stuart Hall. Drawing on their political writings as well as extensive archival research, he "translates" the southern question into different spaces and contexts. In doing so, the book locates the roots of authoritarian and fascist political projects within the historical geography of racist and colonial capitalisms. Most significantly, Camp demonstrates the implications of translating anti-fascist theories into practice for the present conjuncture.
