Social Science for Social Justice

Cultural appropriation is one of the most contested issues of our time - but what does it actually feel like to have your culture taken, repackaged, and sold back to you? In this book, Rina Arya moves beyond familiar debates to place the lived experiences of minoritised communities at the centre of the discussion. Drawing on postcolonial theory, lived religion, cultural studies, and her experiences as a British South Asian, she examines how cultural forms are commodified, transformed, and returned to their communities with renewed authority. Arya argues that the deepest harms of cultural appropriation are not only economic or representational but also psychological, reshaping how people understand their culture and identity. Combining rigorous scholarship with personal testimony, this book challenges readers to rethink who has the authority to define culture - and what is lost when that authority shifts away from the communities from which culture originates.

Thoughtful advice on how to leave academia gracefully and build your best life in retirement Retirement is one of the most challenging transitions in an academic's career, and it's natural to feel overwhelmed by the changes that lie ahead. This how-to guide explains how to structure your last few years of employment so that you retire well and feel good about it. Drawing on engaging personal stories from across academia, it shares concrete tips for letting go of one key phase of life and embracing the opportunity to reinvent yourself in the next. On Retiring makes the case that you have the ultimate say in charting your path through retirement, aging, and whatever comes next after academia--and provides the guidance you need to do so. Susan Shaw describes the lessons she learned from her own retirement experience and those of her colleagues, highlighting what worked and what didn't while paying special attention to the things that make the academic workplace unique. She outlines the four-year retirement plan she developed for herself and suggest some steps colleges and universities can take to honor the service of faculty members and help them to stay connected after retirement. Along the way, Shaw examines some of the downsides of aging in the academy and discusses relevant differences in academic experiences, covering topics such as gender, race, and sexuality. Focusing on so much more than just financial planning, On Retiring empowers you with social, psychological, and philosophical tools to leave the academy on your own terms and thrive in retirement.

Empirical Perspectives on Institutions, Incentives, and Outcomes

The Economics of Crime and Justice

To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, never has so much pornography been available to so many people for so little. This is the story of how the online adult industry has plummeted from its lofty heights of the late 1990s, when a savvy Web entrepreneur could charge premium prices to thousands of eager subscribers. It is also the story of how the law has completely failed to keep pace with the technological innovations that boosted and then savaged the online adult industry. It concludes by analysing the social impact of virtually unlimited pornography of every description, available to all ages at the click of a button. Useful reading for the general reader and for students and researchers involved with business strategy, the history of technology, cultural studies, sexuality, media studies and technology more generally.

Traditionally, the presence of pornography in American society has been mediated by two primary factors: legal restrictions and the relatively high cost of the product. The degree of legal restrictions on adult material has varied from era to era and community to community, but the porn premium has remained relatively constant. Given this, these should be heady days for adult business owners. Thanks to the Internet, distribution costs are virtually nil and even the most hardcore content is easily accessible in the smallest coastal hamlet and most rural farmhouse in America. Adult industry balance sheets should be bulging with profit. But in reality, far from it. The World Wide Web has completely eradicated both the legal restrictions and premium cost that used to govern adult industry economics. To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, never has so much pornography been available to so many people for so little. This is the story of how the online adult industry has plummeted from its lofty heights of the late 1990s, when a savvy Web entrepreneur could charge thousands of eager subscribers premium prices. It is also the story of how the law has completely failed to keep pace with the technological innovations that boosted and then savaged the online adult industry. It concludes with a detailed analysis of the social impact of virtually unlimited pornography of every description, available to all ages at the click of a button.Accessible to the general reader, this book will appeal to those who want to know more about the adult entertainment industry in America and will prove useful reading for students and researchers involved with a wide variety of academic disciplines including business strategy, the history of technology, cultural studies, sexuality, media studies and technology more generally.

The Pornography Business

Contextualizing Art Markets

Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. After an extended historiographical introduction, the volume presents case studies and trends from 1860-1940, including: Jewish family businesses in Western Europe; the role of Jews as mediators of art from East Asia; the antisemitism and suspicion faced by Jewish dealers; Jews as theorists, exhibition makers and promoters of modern art ; and the geographical mobility and professional reinvention of Jewish dealers in times of economic and political crisis. With a wide variety of illustrations, including paintings, decorative arts, historic photographs and archival material, the volume adopts a mix of methodological approaches to analyse a key chapter in Jewish cultural history and in the history of the international art market. Includes Afterword by Charles Dellheim, author of Belonging and Betrayal: How Jews Made the Art World Modern (2021).

Routledge Handbooks in Translation and Interpreting Studies

The second edition of The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Culture collects into a single volume 33 state-of-the-art chapters written by international specialists, overviewing the ways in which translation studies have both informed, and been informed by, interdisciplinary approaches to culture. The new edition retains its distinctive interdisciplinary approach, combining perspectives from Translation Studies with insights drawn from anthropology, indigenous studies, cultural studies, and media studies, while reflecting the major developments that have shaped this transformative decade. The handbook offers innovative reflections on the global impact of artificial intelligence across all spheres of activity, while other chapters extend the scope to new cultural contexts and emerging research areas. This thoroughly updated new edition includes the addition of "Translating Without Words," a new section demonstrating that translation is not merely an intellectual, cognitive, and linguistic process, but also a sensory one. The chapters explore how experiential, sensory, and "felt" forms of translation attune our senses to the perception and creation of meaning, revealing how the discipline has evolved in the twenty-first century. This broad-ranging volume combines comprehensive literature reviews, original essays, case studies, and extensive bibliographic reference and is an essential resource for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers in translation and interpreting studies.

Routledge Studies in Cultural Heritage and International Law

The Legal Pluralism of Heritage: Restitution and the Normative Knowledge of Communities of Origin explores one of the most urgent debates in international cultural heritage law today: the role of Indigenous laws and local norms about material culture in the restitution process. In an era of rising claims for restitution, this book examines how diverse legal and normative orders engage with communities seeking the return of cultural objects held in museums, private collections, and institutions worldwide. It argues that restitution processes need to consider the normative knowledge of communities of origin. Moving beyond conventional legal analysis, the volume includes theoretical interventions and case studies from (international) law, anthropology, archaeology, history, museum studies, art history and Indigenous legal studies, and from all five continents. It offers a new framework for understanding restitution not merely as a legal process, but as a dialogue between legal systems and the knowledge traditions of the communities to whom heritage belongs.Timely and thought-provoking, this book is an essential resource for researchers and practitioners in international law, legal history, historical anthropology, and cultural heritage studies.

This wide-ranging intellectual and media history traces China's emergence as a modern state in which boundaries blur between art and design, education and psychological conditioning. Tracking the parallel development of set design and social engineering from the 1920s to the 1960s, Background Matters examines the concept of huanjing (environment), a neologism introduced at the turn of the twentieth century that evoked heated intellectual debates and inspired frenzied aesthetic experimentation. Weihong Bao shows how efforts to reshape the mind consolidated the idea and art of environment by advancing a new theoretical notion of set design: both as aesthetic organization across film, theater, radio, and television and as social experimentation in worldmaking across geopolitical and transnational contexts. Inventive and breathtaking in scope, this book radically rethinks environment not as an external object but as the nexus of mind, medium, and society.

A Psychological Exploration of Women and Gender

Women's Lives

Born from a desire for creative freedom, web series often circumvent screen industry gatekeepers and attract smaller, niche audiences; but fewer views do not necessarily make the format, or its audience engagement, less valuable. This book looks behind the scenes to uncover how and why audiences engaged with nine Australian web series released between 2020 and 2023. Interviews with web series producers reveal their motivations, audience acquisition and maintenance strategies, funding methods, and platform specific approaches. These first-hand accounts are then compared with viewership metrics and the content of audience commentary, resulting in the illumination of social, cultural, and industrial values of audience engagement with these innovative productions. This book identifies key factors that influence audience behaviours such as perceived authenticity, platform choice, and the types, forms, and costs of engaging with web series. These factors are considered with respect to online community building, relationships between creators and audiences, and commercial uses of the format, resulting in the creation of a typology of web series audiences. Readers benefit from understanding the value and characteristics of each type of viewer across a diverse range of examples featuring differing audience demographics, zero to over $1 million budgets, and platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok. Vibrant narratives are used to convey each series' backstory, providing an informative and engaging reading experience for screen industry practitioners, marketing and broadcast professionals, and aspiring filmmakers. Academics and students in the fields of media studies, audience engagement, screen production, creative labour and entrepreneurship, social media, and algorithmic culture will also benefit from this research.

Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This publication is based upon work from COST Action CA20105 on Slow Memory, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.
