Taking Japan as a heuristic example, this book explores the significance of neatly kept and classified records and archives to maintain a democratic society. Japan adopted constitutional monarchy as a state system in the nineteenth century and then amended it to become a democracy in the twentieth century. How the evaluation of public and governmental records has and has not changed for almost a century is an indication of the maturity of democracy in Japan. How and to what extent the records of the government are disclosed to and shared with the public are among the fundamental criteria to assess the quality and maturity of democracy in a society. From this point of view, the book examines the current status of records and archives management in several spheres of Japanese society, with some international comparative studies as well. On the one hand, Japan is a society that has attached great importance to written documents, which is evident when one sees how carefully ordinary people kept diverse kinds of documents even in the pre-modern period. On the other hand, the public at large has long been indifferent to the records and archives that serve as fundamental infrastructure to keep the governance of society transparent and accountable. By examining those contradictory aspects of the attitudes toward records and archives in Japanese society, this book provides the key elements of management of critical information for a democratic society.

Governments around the world are privatizing everything, with dramatic but largely ignored negative consequences for human rights. This open access book outlines the response that is urgently needed. Corporations are being given control over water, healthcare, housing, public transportation, child welfare services, aged care, and much else. Privatization is promoted by international financial institutions, consulting firms, and development actors as the answer to public finances devastated by the very tax cuts insistently pushed by these groups. Their pitch is based upon a mythology that extols the virtues of an idealized market while ignoring the heavy human rights costs incurred. Building on the latest evidence and on specially commissioned case studies, this book shows how the touted 'efficiency' of the private sector is often predicated on higher charges and/or reduced services, destructive employment practices, and the highly predictable exclusion of many users. Privatization generally costs states more money, marginalizes democratic decision-making, and transforms citizens from rights-holders into customers while sidelining accountability. The authors develop an approach designed to enable human rights actors, including courts, UN treaty monitoring bodies, and NGOs to move beyond their longstanding agnosticism towards privatization. It starts with a presumption that privatization is inherently retrogressive in human rights terms. Whatever mix of public and private is reflected in any given arrangement, governments must retain the degree of control necessary to ensure respect for rights, and the legal, financial and administrative ability to do so. The book charts a new direction for responding to the ever-growing threat that privatization poses to human rights. As digitisation transforms how states, private entities, and individuals use surveillance-across criminal justice systems, workplaces, and in our personal lives-it enables increasingly pervasive forms of monitoring and blurs the boundaries between public and private spaces. This shift raises complex questions about privacy, discrimination, and accountability. While these issues have often been examined in isolated contexts, Digitally Monitored takes a broader view, establishing digital monitoring as a distinct field of enquiry. Together, the chapters address a set of overarching themes that emerge when digital monitoring is viewed more holistically. These include the justifications for monitoring (such as public safety and employee productivity) versus the protection of individual rights, potential infringements on individual liberty, evolving notions of privacy, heightened risks to vulnerable groups posed by biased technologies, and the role of Big Tech in the collection and use of data. Warum aber stellt sich Corporate Governance überhaupt als Problem auch für diakonische Organisationen dar - und worin besteht es? Wie lässt sich die Notwendigkeit von Corporate Governance ökonomisch und organisationstheoretisch begründen? Woher leiten wir unser Wissen über die in solchen "Standards guter Unternehmensführung" unterstellten Zusammenhänge ab? Und was ist darauf für die Corporate Governance diakonischer Unternehmen abzuleiten? 
 

 Die theoretische Verortung des Diskurses um die Corporate Governance und deren Kodifikation macht Grundfragen der Verfassung diakonischer Unternehmen fruchtbar für deren praktische Gestaltung.
