Die Kunst des Handelns ist eine soziologische Theorie des Alltagslebens und des Verbraucherverhaltens. Nach Certeau unterscheidet sich der Alltag wesentlich von anderen Bereichen des Lebens, weil er fast gänzlich unbewusst und dabei vollkommen repetitiv abläuft. Zu einer zentralen Denkfigur wird dabei das 'aktive Konsumieren', "eine andere Produktion, die als Konsum bezeichnet wird" (de Certeau). Der Konsument ist nicht nur passiver Abnehmer von Produkten, sondern selbst auch Produzent: durch die Auswahl der Produkte, die er trifft, "bastelt" er an seiner Identität und Lebenswelt weiter.
De Certeau betreibt dabei kein Studium der 'Populärkultur', sondern der grundlegenden Techniken, "Tricks, Finten und Listen von Verbrauchern: Gehen, Reisen, Erzählen, Sprechen, Schreiben, Denken, Lesen, Machen u. a.", die eine solche Populärkultur erst etablieren. Obwohl das methodische Vorgehen an die Diskursanalyse Michel Foucaults angelehnt ist, interessiert sich de Certeau weniger für die machtsubversiven Möglichkeiten dieser Praktiken, sondern für ihren identitätspolitischen Gehalt. Wichtig ist dabei die Unterscheidung zwischen Strategie und Taktik: Strategie ist nach Certeau "eine Berechnung von Kräfteverhältnissen, die in dem Augenblick möglich wird, wo ein mit Macht und Willenskraft ausgestattetes Subjekt ... von einer 'Umgebung' abgelöst werden kann."[1] Taktik ist demgegenüber "ein Kalkül, das nicht mit etwas Eigenem rechnen kann und somit auch nicht mit einer Grenze, die das Andere als eine sichtbare Totalität abtrennt."[1] Strategie ist ein 'expansives' Kalkül, das auf die immer weiter fortschreitende Kontrolle von Raum und Zeit ausgerichtet ist. Währenddessen müssen Taktiken immer mit einer bereits vorgegebenen Raum- und Zeitordnung vorliebnehmen und deren jeweilige Lücken, Unwägbarkeiten und Inkonsistenzen auszumünzen verstehen.

This book offers philosophical and psychoanalytical reflections on the selfhood shaped in autobiographical graphic narratives, or autographics. These reflections revolve around the ‘autographic gesture’. This gesture refers to, firstly, the leaving of graphic traces of an embodied self, which, secondly, transform into a drawn figure that represents this self and acquires a certain autonomy as a character, and which, thirdly, are embedded in a narrative that tells all or part of this self’s life story. By combining the semiotic logics of trace, image, and narrative, the book argues, autographics perform this gesture and shape a specific form of selfhood. The book studies this process by turning to theories about selfhood constructed primarily within the following three intellectual traditions: existential hermeneutics, as developed by Paul Ricoeur; existential phenomenology, as embodied by Jean-Paul Sartre; and psychoanalysis, through the lenses of Jacques Lacan, Marion Milner, and Donald Winnicott. The ideas of these authors, as well as Paul de Man’s and Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s analyses of subject-constitution, are brought into dialogue with autobiographical graphic narratives by Zoe Thorogood, Katie Green, Peter Pontiac, Alison Bechdel, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Marjane Satrapi, Riad Sattouf, Keiji Nakazawa, Lynda Barry, and others. Mathijs Peters is University Lecturer of Film and Literary Studies at Leiden University, The Netherlands. He is author of Schopenhauer and Adorno on Bodily Suffering (2014), Popular Music, Critique and Manic Street Preachers (2020),and essays on the crossing points between philosophy and popular culture. With Bareez Majid, he co-authored Exploring Hartmut Rosa’s Concept of Resonance (2022).Yasco Horsman is University Lecturer of Film and Literary studies at Leiden University, The Netherlands, and chair of the Leiden University MA-programme in Media Studies. He is author of Theaters of Justice: Judging Staging and Working Through in Arendt, Brecht and Delbo (2010), and essays on psychoanalysis, cinema, comics and animation.

Sensemaking has become an essential concept for understanding how organizational members navigate uncertainty and complexity. It is widely regarded as a key capability for enabling collective action and informed decision-making in unpredictable environments. Yet, despite its popularity, the sensemaking perspective has become increasingly fragmented. Without re-examining its philosophical and conceptual foundations, there is a growing risk that sensemaking will collapse into conventional cognitive models of interpretation – models that are ill-suited to the complex, fluid realities of contemporary organizations. Rethinking Sensemaking undertakes a systematic and critical inquiry into some of the core assumptions that underpin sensemaking theory and practice. Drawing on insights from philosophy, it develops an alternative understanding of sensemaking as a relational, embodied, and dynamic process of organizing.

Building on this reorientation, the book introduces a set of conceptual tools and practical techniques designed to support organizing under conditions of ambiguity and change. It will be of interest to scholars and advanced students in organization studies and management, as well as to leaders seeking a more nuanced approach to organizational sense and action.

This book offers a distinctive approach to policy analysis and a refreshing and politically engaged way of thinking about policy. It clearly articulates a Foucault-influenced poststructural perspective on policy and policy analysis for researchers, students and policy makers. As a "guide to practice", the book introduces a critical analytical approach to policy analysis called ‘What’s the Problem Represented to be?’ (WPR).&nbsp;Instead of treating policy as simply the government’s best efforts to address&nbsp;problems, this analytic strategy highlights how policies produce ‘problems’ as particular sorts of problem and how governing takes place through these problematisations. First published in 2016, the book describes the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of the WPR approach to policy analysis in a detailed and accessible manner.&nbsp; It features examples of application of the approach with topics as diverse as obesity, economic policy, migration, drug and alcohol policy, and gender equality.&nbsp;In this second edition, the authors centralise a complementary analytic strategy for poststructural policy analysis—poststructural interview analysis (PIA). This edition integrates this material as a new chapter which sets out PIA as a novel approach to poststructural interview analysis and includes examples of PIA applications. The new chapter provides excellent guidance to undertake interview analysis in a manner congruent with the poststructural precepts set out in the book.&nbsp;Carol Bacchi is Professor Emerita of Politics at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Her work over the past forty years has encouraged rethinking of taken-for-granted truths about women’s history, equality policy and public policy generally. Major publications include Same Difference: Feminism and Sexual Difference (1990/2024), Women, Policy and Politics: The Construction of Policy Problems (1999), The Politics of Affirmative Action: 'Women', Equality &amp; Category Politics (1996) and Analysing Policy: What’s the Problem Represented to Be? (2009).&nbsp;Susan Goodwin is Professor of Policy Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her research focuses on social policy and policy processes, and she is involved in critical policy analysis with organisations at local, national and international levels. Her books include Working Across Difference: Social Work, Social Policy and Social Justice (2019), Markets, Rights and Power in Australian Social Policy (2015), Schools, Communities and Social Inclusion (2011) and Social Policy for Social Change (2010).&nbsp;

This book investigates Ludwik Fleck’s thought as a radical critique of institutionalized knowledge production, clarifying and extending his concepts to form an updated methodology. It reconstructs the cultural and institutional factors that, as Fleck insisted, are interactional – i.e., shaped by entangled processes rather than a single determinant. Offering an alternative to dominant models of cultural change, it demonstrates how new thought styles emerge, circulate, and face resistance in moments of revolutionary transformation. The central question addressed is how certain communities come to think in new ways – both in response to and contributing to cultural transformations. Such changes are fiercely contested – through censorship, exclusion, and institutional control. When Fleck’s concepts are enhanced by discourse analysis, these struggles can be revealed archaeologically, showing the layers of contestation beneath claims to neutrality and purity. Tracing these conflicts from antiquity to modernity, this book examines how thought styles are marginalized, suppressed, or institutionalized. It examines the oligarchic thought style in Plato’s responses to cultural trauma and loss of control, follows the spread of the Socratic caesura through Cicero’s philosophia and Shaftesbury’s civic reactivation of Socrates, and analyzes its role in the German university system. There, following the exclusion of Hobbes and Spinoza, Bildung became philosophy’s means of asserting autonomy from theological control, culminating in Kant’s Conflict of the Faculties. This book rejects single-determinant models of cultural change – economic, epistemic, discursive, or technological – while also challenging entrenched dichotomies such as myth vs. logos, Enlightenment vs. Counter-Enlightenment, and the public sphere vs. the state. Expanding on Fleck’s theory of thought styles, it develops an open epistemology that continuously reveals new dimensions of cultural facts and their institutional regulation. The book offers a methodologically innovative framework for understanding cultural change. As such, it will be of interest to scholars of philosophy, intellectual history, discourse analysis, and the history of ideas, as well as those exploring the interplay of thought, power, and institutional authority.
