History of the British Empire from Asian Perspectives

Economic Growth in Modern Asia and the British Empire.- The Transatlantic World and East India the Long Eighteenth Century.- Free Trade Empire and Pax Britannica.

This book presents an innovative economic theory that successfully integrates the "effective market" and the "capable government" into a unified model. Moving beyond the traditional view of market versus state, it demonstrates how these forces can work together organically, drawing key insights from China's economic development story. The work constructs a comprehensive rational synthesis model, assigning balanced weight to both market mechanisms and government action. It establishes corresponding macroeconomic goals and policy frameworks. Building on this foundation, the book offers a unified analysis of economic growth theory and identifies the optimal balance point between government intervention and market freedom. Ultimately, this groundbreaking contribution, rooted in China's successful practice, offers a vital new perspective for understanding modern economies. It positions China's economic model and theory for greater global influence, contributing fresh pathways for development within today's rapidly changing world and the pursuit of a shared future for mankind.

The Innovation of Economic Theory in China

From the award-winning and Sunday Times bestselling author of Material World, a story that will take you from ancient civilizations, empire and globalisation through to the most influential geopolitical issue of our times. The story of trade is the story of humanity. From the copper in Mesopotamian ploughs to the silicon atoms within the chip inside your smartphone, intricate global trading networks have evolved over millennia to fulfil the distinctly human desire to buy and sell.Today, the volume of trade bestriding the planet is unprecedented. Yet, as fractures in the global order emerge - from an era of globalisation and untrammelled flows of goods and money to a new world of restrictions, intervention and, possibly, war - understanding this fundamental shift to the dominant economic consensus is more important than ever.Ed Conway tells this extraordinary story through these three commonplace products - bread, cloth and cars. With a compelling blend of economic history and first-hand access to key figures and institutions, he takes us from policy treaties to ground level to show us the people who make, ship and sometimes smuggle the products we buy on a daily basis.Discover the hidden, shifting trade world behind everything you see around you.

The Ties That Bound Our Past and Could Unravel Our Future

Trade World

This open access book examines the work of the 17th-century Baroque painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) - a figure who barely left the city of Seville - as a way of understanding globalization, its consequences, and its limits. Full of saints, friars, virgins, and Christs, or poor people and cheerful pícaros oblivious to social injustice, Murillo's painting has been considered representative of the Counter-Reformation and the exponent of an immobile, even introverted, society that regressed with the 'crisis of the 17th century'. Early Globalization, Spain, and Seventeenth-Century Seville introduces a global perspective by considering the Atlantic art market and developing comparisons with Protestant paintings and an analysis of Murillo's iconography alongside the social and political theory of his time. Such comparisons and analyses illuminate a different image, emphasizing the idea of a common European path towards modernity, individualism, emotional self-control and social change. The book also examines how Murillo's contemporaries interpreted his iconography. The study of different 'layers of globalization', going back to the analysis of the Christian tradition, reveals the existence of political utopias, positive forms of valuing work and an image of the community that, opposed to the development of the speculative economy associated with globalization, would characterize the European history, with all its contradictions. The result is a new and sharper understanding of the tensions created by globalization in the field of art, in the construction of imagined communities, and in social relations in the early modern era. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Pablo de Olavide University, Spain.

Internationalisation versus Securitisation

LSE International Studies

Off the Map challenges how international lawyers picture the world. While traditional scholarship continues to treat the 'World Map' of states as natural, this book exposes the discipline's cartographic inheritance and its growing fatigue. Drawing on critical geography, international relations, and media theory, Nikolas M. Rajkovic reveals how global authority now operates less through contiguous territories than through infrastructures, corridors, and nodes. Introducing the concept of 'juriscapes,' he illuminates the legal significance of ports, data cable landings, aviation hubs, sanctions screens, and cloud regions - sites where rules bite and power circulates. He also develops the idea of pointillistic geographies, showing how law is enacted through coordinates, flows, and switches that escape the flat image of bordered states. Provocative yet accessible, Off the Map revisualizes international law for a fractured global order, equipping readers with the concepts to see where authority truly moves today.

Routledge Studies in the Modern World Economy

This book explores the fading era of globalization that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, driven by the United States-a former champion of economic globalism-now adopting nationalistic and autarkic policies such as higher import tariffs and restricting the inflow of new immigrants and/or deporting migrants. By synthesizing long-run economic history with contemporary issues, the book provides a much needed historical and international perspective on the cumulative tensions leading to this shift, including economic nationalism, protectionism, financial instability, rising inequality, and geopolitical rivalries. The book examines globalization's evolution, from the Renaissance to the present, and contrasts its impact on the global north, global south, and former socialist countries of the Soviet bloc. It delves into the social and political fallout of neoliberal globalization, addressing topics such as wealth inequality, the international mobility of billionaires and global talent, the role of technology and innovation, and the challenges of economic stabilization and austerity in unequal societies. Additionally, it reviews the rise and fall of Soviet socialism, the factory system, and the broader implications of empire and war.Offering insights into the reasons behind the current anti-globalization sentiment, the book calls for a new globalization that is socially equitable, ecologically sustainable, and stable. It will be of great interest to scholars, researchers and students of political economy, economic history, development economics and international relations, helping readers to understand the complex and rapidly changing world.

How to conduct business profitably in the new era of reshoring and economic nationalism First published in 2005, The Black Book of Outsourcing quickly became a definitive guide for businesses navigating the complexities of offshore outsourcing, offering strategies and insights that shaped corporate decision-making during the height of globalization. Now, 20 years later, the world has changed dramatically. The Black Book of Reshoring: The Essential Guide to America's New Manufacturing Boom delivers key insights into how the global economic landscape has shifted, showing how the once-unquestioned dominance of offshore outsourcing has given way to a new era of reshoring and economic nationalism. This book includes information on tariffs, supply chain vulnerabilities, and the COVID-19 pandemic, which have exposed the flaws in globalization's model, leading to a reversal in course as businesses and governments prioritize domestic production, resilience, and sovereignty. This book offers:

Practical frameworks and strategies for businesses considering reshoring, including insights on technology, workforce development, and supply chain resilience

Case studies from leading companies like Tesla, GE, and Pfizer, illustrating the challenges and opportunities of reshoring in industries such as semiconductors, EVs, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods

A forward-looking perspective on the future of trade, globalization, and economic sovereignty

The Black Book of Reshoring is an essential read for all business professionals seeking up-to-date information on trends, strategies, economic impacts, and best practices in reshoring and homeshoring.

New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture

This book examines the relationship between the emergence of Byzantine archaeology and British colonialism during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine. Taking a single case study, the Negev Desert (now in southern Israel), this study explores how the development of Byzantine archaeology and historical enquiry in the region after 1800 provided the British government with a political and economic blueprint to secure its strategic interests over the Suez Canal. Several excavations of Byzantine sites during the British Mandate were utilised as an historic proof of concept for scientific programmes of ‘desert greening’, and to advocate for the displacement of Arab populations in favour of British economic development and town planning. Invariably, such contemporary concerns to secure British access to the Suez after 1869 shaped the interpretation of Byzantine history. Ideas of the Negev as a timeless ‘frontier zone’, which benefitted from the imposition of a central imperial government and increased economic immigration from a ‘Hellenised’ western Europe, gained a historical precedent in an imagined Byzantine past.

A history of the technology of supply-chain management from punch cards to neural nets, and how the ambiguity built into that technology helps companies and exploits workersSeeing Like a Supply Chain is a compelling investigation into the hidden networks that drive our global economy. Miriam Posner presents a blow-by-blow account of the technology of supply-chain management from punch cards to neural nets, revealing how the system's built-in ambiguity shields companies from accountability while exploiting workers.Drawing on more than a decade of research, Posner shows how computation converged with the growth of global trade to allow for a lightning-quick, astoundingly efficient supply chain that lets corporations source products without any notion of where their goods are actually being produced. At a time when multinational firms fear the reputational damage of human rights violations in the making of their products, the supply chain's shroud of vagueness is a feature, not a bug. Posner shows how this is technically accomplished-and how the strategic disavowal of information extends through every step of that chain.

What if the biggest obstacle to solving our problems is nothing more than a failure to believe that we can?Rick Caruso has spent his life stepping optimistically into places where other people see no way forward by asking a deceptively simple question: What can we do to make this better? From his appointment as Commissioner to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and later the City's troubled Police Department, to the creation of his bold and innovative real estate ventures including L.A.'s world-renowned retail center The Grove, Caruso built a reputation for finding steadfast solutions even in the face of staunch adversity. By employing the great teachers of experience and curiosity, he continues to do what he can to improve Los Angeles, the city he loves, and in Breaking New Ground, he shares lessons learned along the way--while offering us all a path forward to a better future.Again and again, Caruso discovered that breakthroughs rarely come from knowing everything at the outset. They come from asking better questions, bringing the right people into the room, listening without ego, separating ideology from reality, and refusing to give up until workable solutions emerge. Ultimately, they require a steadfast dedication to the belief that there is always a solution and that defeat is not an option.Breaking New Ground is the story of how his philosophy was forged--from the examples of immigrant grandparents and a father who lost one fortune and built another, to Caruso's own successes, failures, public battles, family life, faith, and unexpected turns through business and government.Caruso is less interested in prescribing a formula for becoming successful than in exploring how successful problem-solvers think: how they distinguish what matters from what merely makes noise; how they balance conviction with compromise; how they recognize when conventional wisdom has stopped working; and how they remain fearless enough to see difficult decisions through.Part memoir, part argument, and part blueprint for action, Breaking New Ground offers a timely proposition for anyone confronting a problem that feels too complicated, entrenched, or divisive to solve. There is always another way forward. Sometimes you simply have to be willing to build it.
