History of the British Empire from Asian Perspectives

Economic Growth in Modern Asia and the British Empire.- The Transatlantic World and East India the Long Eighteenth Century.- Free Trade Empire and Pax Britannica.

The first of two volumes written “in and against development” tells the story of how of The Economics of Everything, or Economics Imperialism, became a dominant presence in development economics.

Today, economics imperialism sets the agenda in development studies, with the World Bank taking a leading, if contested, role. This volume examines how this happened, charting the evolution from the old or classic development economics through the new, newer and newest development economics. Drawing critically upon the Kuhnian notions of paradigm shifts, corresponding changes are contextualized materially, intellectually and policy-wise. Covering key issues such as famine, the developmental state, and trade and industrial policy, detailed attention is paid to the potential for alternatives for economics and economic policies.

In and against Development: From New to Newest Development Economics

This book presents an innovative economic theory that successfully integrates the "effective market" and the "capable government" into a unified model. Moving beyond the traditional view of market versus state, it demonstrates how these forces can work together organically, drawing key insights from China's economic development story. The work constructs a comprehensive rational synthesis model, assigning balanced weight to both market mechanisms and government action. It establishes corresponding macroeconomic goals and policy frameworks. Building on this foundation, the book offers a unified analysis of economic growth theory and identifies the optimal balance point between government intervention and market freedom. Ultimately, this groundbreaking contribution, rooted in China's successful practice, offers a vital new perspective for understanding modern economies. It positions China's economic model and theory for greater global influence, contributing fresh pathways for development within today's rapidly changing world and the pursuit of a shared future for mankind.

Entrepreneurship and Human-Centric Business Strategies for Social and Economic Resilience

Urgent stories from the intersection of automation and social welfare, told by people around the world fighting for access and resources to care for themselves and loved ones

Welfare systems across the globe have long been set up to punish those who need them to access support. But we're entering a new era where automation and punitive policy make social provision even worse-systems are increasingly computerized, impersonal, and difficult to navigate.

Offering an intimate look at what it means to rely on public services in an ever more alienating world, Not a Number shares sixteen first-person narratives from around the world, as people struggle for access to basic needs with dignity.

Read about Sara Peavey, a young woman in Albuquerque who spent years battling what she calls the "Department of Decisions" in order to receive mental health care; Lucy, a mother in the UK forced to attend child protective hearings and bond with her toddler over Zoom during the COVID-19 lockdowns; John Otajar, an elder in rural Uganda denied social benefits because administrators assigned him an incorrect birth date; and María Medina in Colombia, who was suddenly removed from the category of "poor" by a change to a classification algorithm, losing access to health care and income support.

Together, these stories call us to build systems grounded in dignity, care, and real human connection-so that no one is reduced to a number or data point.

Borderlines and Bottlenecks features a rich collection of real-world examples and detailed case studies, highlighting how recent pandemic and geopolitical events, including the Sino-US trade war, the COVID pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine War, and the Red Sea Crisis, have disrupted and reshaped global supply chains. By exploring the complex interplay between political, economic, and social forces, readers gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing businesses and policymakers in the rapidly changing supply chain landscape. Zhang uses social media-based discourse analysis and pioneering work in GIS-based discourse analysis to offer fresh insights into global supply chain dynamics.

Global Supply Chain Geography in a Post-Pandemic World

Borderlines and Bottlenecks

Synopsis: This dissertation critically examines the intricate and multifaceted relationship between globalization and the sovereignty of nation-states, highlighting how the accelerating interconnectedness of the world has transformed the traditional functions, authority, and autonomy of the state. Rooted in the Westphalian conception of sovereignty as absolute and indivisible, the nation-state has historically been the cornerstone of international relations and governance. However, globalization-manifested through economic integration, cultural exchanges, technological advancements, and political interdependence-has significantly altered these dynamics.
The study offers a comprehensive exploration of sovereignty's evolution, from its origins in the Treaty of Westphalia (1648) to its current hybridized forms influenced by supranational governance structures and global challenges. The thesis adopts an interdisciplinary methodology, integrating theoretical frameworks from international relations, political economy, and sociology with historical and empirical analyses. By investigating the dimensions of globalization-economic, political, cultural, and technological-the research identifies key areas where globalization either undermines or redefines state sovereignty.
This dissertation addresses critical issues, such as the role of multinational corporations, global financial institutions, and international organizations in shaping policy decisions traditionally reserved for nation-states. Furthermore, it delves into the security implications of globalization, including transnational terrorism, migration, and cybersecurity threats, which necessitate multilateral responses and challenge state-centric security paradigms. Through detailed case studies, including the European Union, the Belt and Road Initiative, and regional agreements like NAFTA, the research elucidates how different regions experience and adapt to globalization's pressures.
Ultimately, the thesis argues that sovereignty in the globalized era is neither obsolete nor wholly eroded but reconfigured into more nuanced and layered forms. This paradox of globalization-where states confront both erosion and enhancement of authority-underscores the need for adaptive governance models. The dissertation concludes with actionable policy recommendations for states and international institutions, advocating a balanced approach that preserves the core principles of sovereignty while embracing the benefits of globalization.

This two volume edited collection presents a diverse and comprehensive examination of the history of Latin American agriculture over the last 150 years. It will fill a major gap in the literature by offering a coherent study of the agricultural sector that both involves all the national economies while revising and updating existing research on the long-run evolution of agriculture across the continent and its links with overall economic development. The second volume analyses the agricultural sector in eleven Latin American economies – Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela– in terms of agricultural production, use of inputs (land, capital, labour), technological change, institutional factors, the design of agricultural public policies and the consequences in terms of environmental degradation. Through these detailed case studies, the book deals with four core themes to offer an updated, informed perspective on Latin American agriculture, including its major institutions and reforms, the role of the state and public policy design, the impact of globalization and the continent’s engagement with global markets, as well as the still-evolving environmental impacts of the sector. Weaving an awareness of broader regional and global contexts into each chapter, the volume illuminates the diversity of developments and trends in agricultural history across different countries, facilitating stronger understanding of the role of agriculture in economic development and policy implications for the continent today. Persistence, Evolution and Change in Latin American Agriculture, Volume II

Why Big Labor moved to the right— and the fight ahead for the left to win back America’s working class Unions helped construct the American middle class, defeat Jim Crow, and advance progressive rights, but in Trump’s America, the labor movement is changing. In Big Labor's Big Shift, journalist Nathan Bomey explores how Big Labor and the working class are no longer an automatic ally of the American left. Fueled by decades of economic decline, political disillusionment, and cultural disenfranchisement, new politically nebulous and economically populist leaders in the movement are building a powerful new movement based on class warfare that prizes wage and benefit gains over traditional progressive priorities. Through original reporting and first-hand interviews, Bomey traces key events that have led to this political shift. Bomey reveals: -At the Teamsters, president Sean O’Brien is cozying up to Donald Trump and blasting Democrats as tools of big business, even showing up at the Republican National Convention to deliver his message. -At the United Auto Workers, president Shawn Fain is seizing an opportunity to break the free trade consensus in Washington. The devout Christian, who wields religious rhetoric from the stump, is aligning with the Trump White House on tariffs and blasting Democrats for aggressively pursuing electric vehicles to fight climate change. Bomey shows how the two interconnected phenomena represent a massive political realignment—not just along cultural and nationalism lines, but of the working class itself away from its historic roots in the Democratic party. Urgent and compelling, Big Labor's Big Shift encapsulates the fight for the soul of the union movement.

Big Labor's Big Shift

This book investigates the history of the Protestant voting blocs and associations in the Irish border counties of Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, from 1920 to 2016. While there are many studies on the history of Irish Unionism and Protestantism, there has been a lack of research concerning the political history of the Protestant community in the border counties following partition. Many Protestant Unionists in counties Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan felt betrayed by their six county counterparts breaking the Ulster Covenant in abandoning a nine-county Northern Ireland. However, the Unionist Associations of these counties evolved after the implementation of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922 and adapted to their new political environment by becoming ‘Protestant’ Associations. The author seeks to explore how these Associations were established, and how they reacted to political changes during the twentieth century. Arguing that Protestant Associations arose as a Unionist shock response to Ireland’s partition in 1922, the author demonstrates how they aimed to ensure their political representation and the maintaining of Protestant interests. Support for these associations dwindled over time due to demographic change, a decline in membership of the Orange Order, and the gradual erosion of Southern Protestantism as a separate political identity over the course of multiple generations. Shedding light on why these associations lasted until the twenty-first century, and then disbanded, this book examines how former Southern Unionists in the border counties evolved their political identity following partition.
