Heimat meint eine Form nicht mehr eigens zur Bewusstheit kommender, selbstverständlicher Vertrautheit und elementarer Einbindung in lokale, soziale und kulturelle (Vor-)Gegebenheiten, denen eine konstitutive Bedeutung für unsere Existenz, unsere Identität und unser Selbstbild zukommt. Heimat gibt sich uns dabei so selbstverständlich, dass wir ihrer paradoxerweise erst im Modus der Abwesenheit, des Verlustes und Entzuges gegenwärtig werden.
Den Menschen kennzeichnet ein spannungsvoller Grundbezug zum Heimatlichen: weil ihn sowohl das Bedürfnis nach Heimischsein als auch ein ebenso elementares Unterwegssein und der Aufbruch und Exodus aus dem Gewohnten hinaus in die Fremde charakterisieren. Heimat grenzt und schirmt sich gegen das un-heim-liche Fremde ab.
