A Beginner's Guide

Using an aesthetic culture and techniques termed as jihadi cool, terrorist groups have been able to recruit members from around the world, so how do we begin to respond? This book analyzes the rhetorical and ethical dynamics of a culture of jihadi cool/chic, and why these rhetorical and aesthetic techniques have been such a powerful recruitment force for particular transnational terrorist groups. The author uses an evidence-based approach, with frameworks derived from law, politics, philosophy, rhetoric, feminist theory, and communication studies, to examine various attempts to construct counter-narratives to the jihadi cool master narrative. The book closes with an examination of how to begin to respond critically and effectively to the lure of jihadi cool.

This open access book offers an in-depth understanding of the challenges, dilemmas and strategies of reinstating the rule of law after the dismantling of a constitutional order. Drawing on the case of Poland's democratic transition back to the rule of law, the volume explores the uncharted territory of restoring independent institutions within an EU Member State. After eight years of autocratic interference with the judiciary, media and state institutions, the Parliamentary elections of October 2023 mark a turning point for Poland. The new government now faces the complex challenge of restoring the rule of law, with European and international law playing a pivotal role. Still, at numerous crossroads a dilemma comes up: Can the rule of law be disregarded to restore it? Or must the rule of law be adhered to at the risk of legal and institutional paralysis? This book presents strategies for solving this dilemma in theory and practice, thereby paving the way for other states' transitions to come. Through a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, including historical and contextual analysis, the authors show that restoring the rule of law is more than just a legal challenge. This volume equips academics and policymakers with conceptual tools and practical guidance to address the pressing issue of reinstating the rule of law, both in Poland and beyond. New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture

This book examines the relationship between the emergence of Byzantine archaeology and British colonialism during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine. Taking a single case study, the Negev Desert (now in southern Israel), this study explores how the development of Byzantine archaeology and historical enquiry in the region after 1800 provided the British government with a political and economic blueprint to secure its strategic interests over the Suez Canal. Several excavations of Byzantine sites during the British Mandate were utilised as an historic proof of concept for scientific programmes of ‘desert greening’, and to advocate for the displacement of Arab populations in favour of British economic development and town planning. Invariably, such contemporary concerns to secure British access to the Suez after 1869 shaped the interpretation of Byzantine history. Ideas of the Negev as a timeless ‘frontier zone’, which benefitted from the imposition of a central imperial government and increased economic immigration from a ‘Hellenised’ western Europe, gained a historical precedent in an imagined Byzantine past.

This book presents a critical and philosophical analysis of Islamic law (Sharia), focusing on its legal structure. The work argues that Islamic jurisprudence should be understood as a human interpretive endeavour, shaped by its historical and social contexts rather than as a fixed divine code. 
The book is organised into two chapters and a conclusion:Chapter One presents the foundational perspectives on Islamic law, examining both traditional and rational approaches and clarifies their practical implications.
Chapter Two offers a critical reassessment of the traditional concept of Islamic law, arguing that it no longer adequately addresses the complexities and challenges of the modern world.
The conclusion synthesises the key findings and proposes a new interpretive framework for understanding and applying Islamic law in today's context.

In Zeiten einer vermeintlich wachsenden Kriminalität junger Menschen rücken Altersgrenzen und Erziehungsverhältnisse in den Fokus - so soll z.B. die richtige Erziehung vorbeugend wirken. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes betrachten die Konzepte und Ansprüche gegenüber jugendlicher Devianz und Delinquenz in der sogenannten 'Sattelzeit' (1750-1850). Dabei gehen sie auf Quellen ein, die in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen zeigen, wie 'verwahrloste' Jugendliche zum Problem erhoben wurden, dem u.a. mit neuartigen Anstalten begegnet werden sollte.

To develop contemporary religious education and viable models in a pluralistic society, reflected and contextualised approaches are needed. The aim is to rethink traditional patterns of interpretation and to use theological research for the development of new pedagogical theories. Experts from various disciplines, including Islamic and Christian theology as well as interreligious hermeneutics, have enriched this publication and offer discourses on current research fields that are rich in perspectives.

Andererseits haben Forscher aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln darauf hingewiesen, dass Entwaldung und Versteppung nicht immer der Realität entsprechen, so dass man sich mit den ideologischen Dimensionen der Aufforstungspolitik beschäftigen muss. Die Bewirtschaftung von Wäldern kann zugleich Teil der Erhaltung wie auch der Ausbeutung natürlicher Ressourcen sein, flankiert Staats- und Nationenbildung ebenso wie Kolonialpolitik.
