This book is the first of a three-part series that focuses on how arts-based methods can be used to expand horizons for imaginative and ethical research and practice in education and human services. Each of the books are an assemblage of arts-based methods for creative adventures in education and human services. The chapters of the books describe, inhabit, and demonstrate the methods and document the multiplicities of insights, affects, and effects that emerged, and which include exploring the dynamically entangled relations between people and contexts. 


This book, Part 1, attunes readers in/to the adventurousness of the three-part series. It also includes chapters on theoretically informed creative/critical/collective/auto/ethnographic experiments in thinking, lip syncing, dialoguing on images, and making artworks. The chapters report on lessons from deploying these adventurous methods for creatively knowing and doing education and human services work. The methods also function as pedagogical spaces to inhabit, navigate, play with, play within, experiment with/in, and be productive and produced in, shedding light on how to generate spaces and find places for actively engaging with the ever growing, inexhaustible, energizing, exhausting, pleasurable, confronting, seductive, repulsive, and overwhelming possibilities of thought and action in education and human services. Readers are invited to engage with the chapters as research products to learn from and as works of art to escape into and find consolation, experience as a tonic, be invigorated, get inspired, feel joy, enter a pleasurable flow, see what sparks, and venture, play, wonder, create, and generate their own creative adventures in education and human services.


The three books (Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3) in this series are not organised around specific focused themes. Rather, each chapter in each book introduces and explores a method that is inhabited by the authors in a creative and speculative fashion to see what is generated. The Introduction/s and the 'Thinking Thinking' chapter in Part 1 are a good place to begin with each of the three books, and in turn, the 'Conclusion' chapter in Part 3 is a good place to close in reading each of the three books. The other chapters, however, are not in sequential order and accompany each other, and can therefore be read in any order. The authors invite readers to play and be adventurous with how they read, inhabit, and engage with the books.

Education in the Asia-Pacific Region: Issues, Concerns and Prospects

This book presents the results of a Hong Kong study that focused on refugees’ contributions, and potential, to support green urban development. It describes education about sustainability principles in non-formal skills development settings, and the benefits of this learning for refugees.

International studies highlight the importance of skills development for disadvantaged groups so they can effectively integrate into accepting societies. However, developing green skills that can help refugees engage in sustainability efforts in new settlements is new and proved successful in our Hong Kong study.

Theoretical and practical angles are used to explore the topic and emphasize the importance of a transformative design for skills development programs for disadvantaged groups as an educational response towards challenges of sustainable urban development. The book discusses the interplay between opportunity structures, agency, and the gendered experience and outlines the results of skills training on three levels – personal, community and society. This book applies a novel approach in searching for a positive view on refugees and their role in society.

The book also highlights social entrepreneurship and its impact on the personal and community levels, following skills training, in terms of behavioural change and participation in society’s sustainability efforts. Researchers, field workers at NGOs working with refugees, TVET practitioners and policymakers can benefit from this book as it includes recommendations for policy change.

Prison building has moved from the margins to the mainstream of our penal politics. In recent years the UK Government has invested billions in new prison building and the main political parties are currently locked into a penal arms race over who can, and who will, build the most additional prison places in England and Wales. Prison building is now widely lauded as the definitive policy solution to the current prisons crisis and yet, this remains an elusive sphere of penal policymaking. Academic research remains in its infancy, and we still know very little about how these large investment decisions are made, by whom and for what reasons.
In seeking to shine a light on this subterranean and largely closed sphere of contemporary penal policymaking, this book presents the first systematic study of prison building programmes in England and Wales since the mid-1990’s punitive turn. Drawing upon extensive archival research, 28 exploratory qualitative interviews, publicly recorded data, historic satellite imagery and other mapping techniques this book has three main aims: (1) to provide an authoritative historical account of prison building activity in England and Wales since the mid-1990s punitive turn, (2) to explain why successive governments have chosen to invest in new prison building programmes and (3) to reflect upon how the prisons we build - functionally, architecturally, geographically – continue to shape our politics long after they have been constructed.
Thomas Guiney&nbsp;is Assistant&nbsp;Professor of Criminology in the School of Sociology and Social Policy&nbsp;at University of Nottingham, UK. Tom has published widely on the politics of punishment and recently published an edited collection&nbsp;Parole Futures: Rationalities, Institutions and Practices&nbsp;with Hart Bloomsbury (Oñati International Series in Law and Society). Tom sits on the Editorial Board of the&nbsp;British Journal of Criminology and is a regular contributor to public debates on criminal justice.

L'auteur a décidé d'écrire ce pamphlet afin d'exprimer sa déception vis-à-vis de l'Allemagne. L'évolution de l'Allemagne au cours des 20 dernières années lui donne notamment lieu à des inquiétudes, à de la frustration et très souvent à de la colère. 

En observant notre pays de plus près, notamment du point de vue de l'étranger, on constate que des symptômes de déclin social sont apparus de manière significative, qu'il s'agisse du manque de respect, de l'hypocrisie, de la fausseté, du fait de ne représenter rien ni personne, ce qu'incarnent notamment la génération Merkel. ' Que m'importent mes voisins, l'essentiel est que ma vie et mon ascension sociale soient assurées. ' Depuis 2005, sous les gouvernements d'Angela Merkel, mais aussi de ses successeurs, l'Allemagne est tombée dans un sommeil profond dont le réveil sera très douloureux. Les économies absurdes à tout prix et la réduction des prestations de l'État ne reposent sur aucune base ni sur aucune connaissance économique raisonnable. Le soi-disant ' zéro noir ' dans le budget n'existe pas dans la théorie économique. 

L'ensemble des infrastructures allemandes, son état moral, sa constitution sociale et sa réputation internationale ont fortement souffert. L'intolérance, le racisme, la haine, l'antisémitisme et l'islamophobie ont considérablement augmenté. La politique n'est plus en mesure de maîtriser cette situation et il appartient désormais à nous, la société, de nous lever et de mettre un terme à ces développements. 
L'avenir de notre pays et de nos enfants, notre prospérité, notre bonheur et notre position dans le monde en dépendent. 
Dans ce contexte, cet ouvrage met le doigt sur les plaies de l'Allemagne d'aujourd'hui. Un livre pour ceux qui s'interrogent sur eux-mêmes et sur la société, un livre contre l'hypocrisie et la lâcheté de la société et de la politique allemandes. Ce comportement se retrouve sous une forme similaire dans d'autres sociétés occidentales.

Die Inhalte sind knapp formuliert, verständlich erklärt, journalistisch geschrieben, kurz: spannend. Denn nur wer Spaß am Lesen hat, informiert sich gerne. Und nur wer informiert ist, kann sich mit den wichtigen Fragen der Zeit souverän auseinandersetzen.
In der dritten Kohlhammer-Trilogie "Von Macht und Ohnmacht" geht es um die alte Frage: Wer regiert die Welt? Es herrscht Politik- oder vielleicht besser: Politiker-Verdrossenheit, eine allgemeine Unzufriedenheit damit, wie Politik auf professioneller Ebene gemacht wird. Der erste Band soll diese "große Politik" behandeln: Profipolitiker, Parteien, Lobbyisten - oder als Stammtisch-Parole: "Die da oben". Welche Kritik ist berechtigt? Was gehört zu einer pluralistischen, repräsentativen Demokratie einfach dazu? Demokratie lebt davon, dass sich die Bürgerinnen und Bürger einbringen. Da liegt es nahe, auf mehr Partizipation, mehr direkte Demokratie zu setzen: das ist Thema des zweiten Bands. Aber auch bei der Politik "von unten" ist nicht alles Gold was glänzt. Engagement ist oft mühsam und droht, selbst ein Projekt von Bildungseliten zu werden. Auch inhaltlich sind die Ergebnisse nicht immer im Sinne des Gemeinwohls (Stichwort: "not in my backyard"). Wie müsste also "gute Politik" aussehen? Darüber macht sich der dritte Band Gedanken - und zwar aus einer generationenübergreifenden Perspektive.

This book identifies an emerging Brazilian cultural criminology which combines Brazilian and Latin American critical criminology with the new avenues of investigation and methodologies that characterize cultural criminology more broadly. Bringing together various perspectives, it offers a new take on cultural criminology which demonstrates its international scope and innovative approaches to explore the specific problems of Brazil’s peripheral reality. It presents a window into past and present Brazil, discussing themes of colonialism, slavery, genocide, racism, eugenics, police lethality, mass imprisonment, urban groups, Bolsonarism, youth gangs, mediated representation, and the pandemic.
The joint work of criminologists from Brazil constitutes a new facet of Brazilian critical criminology and a new facet of cultural criminology itself. Bound by their common political identity, these fields continue to develop and spiral together, challenging accepted notions of locality and reinventing academic and everyday forms of resistance in different arenas of the Global South and Global North. 
This book demonstrates that the reception and incorporation of methodologies and ideas from cultural criminology into Brazilian critical criminology do not reveal a simple reproduction, but rather that Brazilian criminologists continue to reinvent and contest, from the margins, the very cultural criminology of the Global North from which they were inspired to refine and expand the accumulated critical knowledge positioned against administrative criminology.&nbsp;
