This book addresses the various challenges that arose during the two periods of Indonesian President Jokowi's administration. These included the global economic crisis, increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics, such as competition between major powers, the Covid-19 pandemic and its ramifications for Indonesia, as well as issues of border disputes, human trafficking, and the situation in Palestine. Addressing these challenges necessitates a forward-thinking Indonesian foreign policy strategy. As the 2024 General Election has taken place and President Jokowi's term came to an end, this book presents a timely and comprehensive discussion on Indonesian foreign policy and diplomacy and its associated challenges—those of the past, and those now facing the current administration. Relevant to Indonesian and international political scientists and social scientists, this interdisciplinary book—which includes perspectives from both scholars and practitioners—confronts Jokowi's policies relating to the economy, territorial, migration, religion, and all aspects of Indonesian society, in the context of the former government.

Unter Xi Jinping stellt die Kommunistische Partei den Fußball in den Mittelpunkt ihrer nationalen Erneuerungsstrategie und strebt danach, China zu einer mächtigen Sportnation zu etablieren. Dieses Vorhaben führte zu kontroversen Interaktionen zwischen staatlichen, internationalen und lokalen Akteuren, die politische Vorgaben, Marktinteressen und Menschenrechte ausbalancieren müssen. Das Buch beleuchtet, wie der Parteistaat Fußball gezielt einsetzt, um soziale, wirtschaftliche und politische Ziele zu erreichen. Anhand von Fallstudien werden zentralisierte Steuerung, sportdiplomatische Bemühungen und lokale Kooperationen aufgezeigt. Zudem erweitert es die Politische Steuerungstheorie. Von der Debatte um Mesut Özil bis zu Schulfußballprogrammen wird der Einfluss des Parteistaates auf den Fußball und seine Bedeutung in globalen Konflikten untersucht. Ilker Gündoğan ist Postdoktorand an der Universität Würzburg, Fellow am EU*Asia Institute der ESSCA in Frankreich und Forscher am Centre for EU-Asia Connectivity der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

 This book examines policy innovations in highly hierarchical societies, particularly in Asia. Drawing on an insightful case study from Thailand, it assesses how policy innovations come to be cultivated at the sub-national level of a centralised government. In particular, the book assesses the role of policy innovation cultivators in the policymaking process, including the constraints placed upon them and the tactics they employ to overcome them. Whilst this topic has received much attention from Western scholars in democratic societies, far less studies have examined the role of policy innovation cultivators in Asia and the Global South, where countries are often governed by hierarchical, semi-autocratic governments. The book therefore offers important insights into how the role of these cultivators differs in different parts of the world, depending on the political context, administrative system, and socio-cultural setting in which they operate.
