Over the past two decades, auto production increasingly shifted to emerging economies, marking a significant reconfiguration of the global auto industry. She works on the political economy of industrial development in emerging economies, with a special focus on the automotive industry.
Martin Schröder&nbsp;is Associate Professor at the College of Policy Science, Ritsumeikan University, Japan, and Visiting Researcher at the Research Institute of Automobile and Parts Industries, Waseda University, Japan. His research interests are regional economic integration in ASEAN, the political economy of the automotive industry, and digitalisation in the automotive industry.

This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. The topics addressed include food security and sustainability of agriculture especially in the suburbs of big cities; poverty reduction in rural agricultural areas amidst prosperity in urban and coastal areas; regional networks and international trade of the food industry in East Asia; creation of innovative knowledge and human capital for clustering of the agro-food sector; regional development strategy; and international cooperation. China's Infrastructure Aid and Investment

Rural development is one of the most complex and topical research areas, requiring interdisciplinary approaches and the proposal of multifunctional, sustainable economic development models grounded in both theoretical and empirical studies. Such studies emphasize socio-economic indicators that can improve policy approaches to analysis, evaluation, and decision-making. Shifts in rural development policies-from a sectoral to a multisectoral perspective and, more recently, to a territorial approach that embraces local community development-highlight the need for socio-economic indicators related to rural development opportunities generated by various domains (e.g., agriculture, tourism). Rural areas are among those experiencing the most profound transformations in recent years, driven by demographic challenges, economic fluctuations and uncertainties, environmental risks, and the impacts of climate change. These factors significantly increase population vulnerability worldwide in rural regions. Population growth and resource scarcity or depletion become even more acute when access to education, financial resources, or transportation infrastructure is limited by unbalanced investments and inadequate planning resulting from deficient administrative systems. Conversely, the rapid development of digital technologies-including smart agriculture, smart household technologies, and digital systems of education and administration-demonstrates clear opportunities for growth and development while improving resource accessibility for rural regions and among more vulnerable demographic groups.

On social media, the attention economy shapes and governs our engagement. Social media actors use a variety of tactics to gain our attention, to 'go viral', and to become 'internet famous'. They manufacture extraordinary events, curate their lives for us to consume, and play on our emotions to draw us in. But relying on only the picture perfect, the pristine, and the prestigious a la 'aspirational' role-modelling is fast becoming stale to audiences in this very saturated space. Enter the use of 'online drama' to wrestle for the attention spans of audiences, when social media actors use discursive and visual narratives centred on angst, shock, fear, shame, pity to generate visibility, yield interest, and provoke conversations in the gladiatorial arena of social media. Through a range of lively case studies spanning platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube, and popular online for a in the Asia Pacific region, this book explores topics such as 'shamelebrity', the 'influencer apology', 'call out culture', 'cancel culture', and 'meme factories' to unpack that peculiarly contemporary online phenomenon: the culture and economy of online drama. Creative Accumulation examines how nations build the capabilities required for sustained technological leadership, moving beyond simple catch-up growth. Drawing on Korea's long-term development experience, Jeong-Dong Lee introduces the concept of the "middle innovation trap", a condition in which countries achieve high levels of implementation capability yet struggle to generate original concepts, architectures, and design leadership. The book argues that original concept design is not the product of individual genius or sudden breakthroughs but the outcome of creative accumulation. Creative accumulation requires posing bold question, persistently accumulating trial-and-error experiences, and scaling up from ideas to viable outcomes. Integrating insights from innovation theory, evolutionary economics, and industrial policy, Jeong-Dong Lee shows how these processes of creative accumulation enable nations to become technology leaders. Although the book draws its evidence from the trajectory of Korean industry and technology, Korea's experience represents a compelling and instructive case of a broader developmental process. Drawing on decades of engagement with government and business, Lee shows that countries which fail to build solid implementation capability tend to fall into the middle income trap. Yet even countries that escape this may encounter the middle innovation trap if they fail to develop concept design capability, resulting in renewed stagnation. This book reveals how the formation of the Chinese socialist system in the 1950s dramatically transformed the nation’s economy, and charts how the newly established economic system functioned during the planned economy period (1949-1978), through focusing on Shanghai, which had served as the center of China’s modern economy since the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on the rich historical primary sources of the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this study examines the impact of the institutional change wrought by the introduction of the socialist system on Shanghai’s economy, through a careful comparison with the economic structure before 1949. Moreover, it also explores the distinctive features of the Chinese socialist system, first and foremost the relationship between local governments and local businesses that came about through the socialist transformation of private enterprise, by analyzing Shanghai’s fiscal structure and a series of key industries, including the textile, machinery, rubber processing, cement, and power industries. This historical study proffers a new understanding of the long-term economic history of modern China across the pivotal 1949 and 1978 divides and sheds light on the origin of what has come to be known as "socialism with Chinese characteristics" today.
