The lives of the world's poorest are already harder, hotter, and shorter, thanks to the actions and emissions of the world's richest. But just as the rich world's emissions are finally falling, emissions from poorer countries are set to increase drastically. We seem to be caught in an impossible bind-but it's not too late to find a way out. In Just Economics, renowned economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo (co-recipients of the 2019 Nobel Prize), and Michael Greenstone propose a radical new approach to combatting the climate crisis, arguing that climate deterioration is inseparable from our polycrisis of mass migration, political instability and the resurgence of populist nationalism. We cannot make progress, they show, without compensating those harmed by climate change and incentivizing developing countries to reduce their emissions, to our benefit too. Morality and self-interest are no longer mutually exclusive. Based on meticulous original research and years of fieldwork around the world witnessing and quantifying the real impact of climate change on those most affected, this inspiring work shows it's not impossible to protect the poor while protecting our future-it's just economics.

This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit. This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades.
