The Seven Years' War, the Battle of Plassey won against the Nawab of Bengal, the acquisition of the Bengal Diwani Rights and the Act of Regulating set the stage for the Second British Empire in Asia between 1756 and 1773. These events and the growing settlements had brought an ever-increasing number of soldiers to Bengal and the other factories of India. The French had largely lost the geopolitical game in Asia, but remained numerous in Pondichéry and even in Bengal (Chandannagar).The cultural history of these major shifts in global power deserves more attention: an increase in the number of European libraries abroad is not surprising for either nation. But the British case is special: a very different form of high culture society was now established in Calcutta, with the first common law court of record ever established outside Britain, the Supreme Court. A long tradition and recent scholarship have largely clarified our ideas about how political-economic leaders like Warren Hastings and major scholars like William Jones supported and influenced the study of Persian and Sanskrit manuscripts and indigenous legal traditions at this moment. But the book also shows that at the same time, as Europe's population grew, a more standardized form of libraries and a Western reading culture emerged. With the arrival of more soldiers and company servants, a Western world canon began to form. This differed from the period up to 1750 in the Mediterranean and India, studied in the first volume&nbsp;Western Libraries and Reading, where a multiplicity of small libraries, individual in size and selection, prevailed. One of the first massive manifestations of this Western canon, with a particularly Franco-British character, can be traced in the serial documentation of post-mortem household inventories. The results of a first detailed analysis of the bestsellers of the late eighteenth century among Europeans in India until 1800 are surprising: A "world literature" in the ambiguous Goethean sense becomes visible, and almost no European medieval author survives (until nineteenth-century Romanticism). In today's world, a "Western canon" is usually criticized, debated, and decentered, and with good reason, but as a historical process, the impact of such an imported canon cannot be ignored. No one denies the strong dynamics of autonomous forms of print and reading culture now emerging simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, and many other languages, sometimes hybridizing with British production. To some extent, however, it must also be acknowledged that British Bengal early on provided an immense space for this Western canon abroad, comparable ultimately only to the American East Coast.

"What is the nature of slavery as practiced and at times reintroduced over the past two centuries in the Middle East and North Africa? In spite of the rich regional diversity of the areas studied - from Morocco to the Indian Ocean to Iran - this anthology demonstrates clear commonalities across the super-region. These include the regulation of slavery by Islam and local traditions, the absence of a rigid racial hierarchy as in North American slavery, the management of the sexuality and reproductive capacity of female slaves, and views on identity and heritage among descendants of slaves. Authors also examine the economic and theological underpinnings of contemporary slavery and human trafficking. The book is among the first to focus on slavery across the Islamic world from the 19th century to the present - a period constituting the endgame of institutionalized slavery in the region but also the persistence of forms of de facto enslavement. Each chapter scrutinizes from a different vantage point - institutions, economics, the abolitionist movement, literature, folklore, and the moving image - creating a multi-dimensional picture of the phenomenon. The authors have mined government archives and statistics, memoirs, interviews, photographs, drawings, songs, cinema and television. Not only are Arabic, Persian and Turkish sources leveraged, but a variety of materials in minor and endangered languages, such as Soqotri, Balochi and Sorani Kurdish, in addition to European languages"--

This groundbreaking study examines the unlikely merger of two Japanese cultural phenomena, an 11th-century aristocratic text and contemporary manga comics. It explores the ways in which the manga versions of The Tale of Genji use gender, sexuality, and desire to challenge perceptions of reading and readership, morality and ethics, and what is translatable from one culture to another. Lynne K. Miyake shows that, through their girls, ladies, Boy Love, boys and young men, and informational comics remediations of the tale, the manga Genjis visually, narratively, and affectively rework male and female gazes; Miyake reveals how they gently inject humor, eroticize, gender flip, queer, and simultaneously re-inscribe and challenge heteronormative gender norms. The first full-length study of Genji manga, this book analyses these adaptations within manga studies and the historical and cultural moments that fashioned and sustained them. It also interrogates the circumscribed, in-group aristocratic society and the consumer and production practices of the Heian society that come full circle in the manga versions. The Tale of Genji through Contemporary Manga utilizes western queer, feminist, sexuality and gender theory and Japanese cultural practices to illuminate the ways in which the Genji tale redeploys itself. Yet it also provides much needed context and explanation regarding the charges of appropriation of prepubescent (fe)male and gay bodies and the utilization of (sexual) violence mounted against Genji manga-and manga and anime in general once they went global.

It explores the myriad ways in which the Roman Empire became an integrated political, social and economic system. &nbsp;Split across two volumes, the collection addresses the dynamic interaction between Rome and its provinces in developing institutions crucial to societal and economic development.&nbsp; It challenges notions of uniformity, demonstrating how tensions between imperial standardization and local cultures could both drive innovative legal and economic practices and hinder empire-wide integration. She has a PhD in Roman law and a second PhD in roman archaeology. She has published extensively on Roman law and its maritime and commercial focus. Koenraad Verboven is professor&nbsp;of Ancient History at the University of Ghent.&nbsp; He specializes in ancient social and economic history, and has a particular interest in monetary history and numismatics, friendship and patronage based networks, professional associations(collegia), and the application of economic theories in historical research.
