Patterns of Economic Change by State and Area: Income, Employment, and Gross Domestic Product is a special edition of Business Statistics of the United States. It presents data on personal income, employment, and gross domestic product for the United States as a whole, and by region, state, and metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Data on personal income and employment extends back to 1960 for the states and regions and to 1970 for the MSAs. Patterns of Economic Change complements other Bernan Press titles such as the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book and County and City Extra. In contrast to their predominantly current and detailed cross-section data on states and metropolitan areas, this book contributes historical time-series measurements of key aggregates that show how the economies of regions, states, and metropolitan areas have responded over time to cyclical currents and long-term trends. Statistics at the state level provide a framework for analyzing current economic conditions in each state and can serve as a basis for decision making. For example: ·Federal government agencies use the statistics as a basis for allocating funds and determining matching grants to states. The statistics are also used in forecasting models to project energy and water use. ·State governments use the statistics to project tax revenues and the need for public services. ·Academic regional economists use the statistics for applied research. ·Businesses, trade associations, and labor organizations use the statistics for market research.

 Sebastián Álvarez
 is Professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile and Associate Researcher at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. His work explores the history of finance and banking in Latin America, with particular attention to how capital markets shape economic policy and international relations. He is the author of 
 Mexican Banks and Foreign Finance
 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).
 Ezequiel Spector
 is Research Professor and Director of the Master of Arts program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Adolfo Ibáñez University in Chile. He is the author of

The Daily Life of Money in History

A revelatory financial history showing that today's massive Islamic finance industry was preceded by decades of Muslim interest banking across Eurasia and Africa. Since the 1970s, the now multi-trillion-dollar Islamic finance industry has offered interest-free banking to Muslims around the world. Its proponents maintain that Islamic law strictly forbids all forms of financial interest. Many academic accounts echo this perspective, assuming that before the 1970s, Muslims either avoided interest banking out of deep-seated religious hostility or practiced it in defiance of religious stricture. Yet as Michael O'Sullivan argues, these narratives overlook rich traditions of Muslim interest banking that preceded Islamic finance. In the early twentieth century, the first modern Muslim-owned interest banks appeared across Eurasia and Africa-from India to the Ottoman Empire, Tsarist Russia, Habsburg Bosnia, Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, Palestine, and Indonesia. Viewed as a solution to Muslim economic distress, these banks intensified debates among Muslims about both the Islamic legal tradition and acceptable economic practices. While interest banks raised suspicions among some Islamic legal scholars, others explicitly defended their legality and encouraged Muslim entrepreneurs. Ultimately, O'Sullivan shows that the Islamic finance industry's commitment to interest-free banking was a product of contingency as much as principle. It was a combination of bank failures, high rates of indebtedness, and changing religious interpretations that eventually led many Muslims to reject interest banking and demand a replacement more commensurate with an "Islamic economy." Even so, the religious debates inaugurated by the first Muslim interest banks persist to this day. A vibrant portrait of economic life in the so-called peripheries of capital, The Borrower's Refuge is a major contribution to the global history of finance.
