Welthandel zwischen Integration und Desintegration

Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 3.0, University of California, Irvine, course: Asian Studies, language: English, abstract: What is the impact of Chinese foreign direct investment on the growth and economic performance of Asian countries?In recent decades, China has progressively become one of the nations with the highest foreign direct investment (FDI) levels. The country has attracted more than $1.5 trillion in FDI during the last three decades. Notably, the large volumes of FDI inflows have promoted Chinese economic growth in terms of capital creation, export expansion, increased competition, employment establishment, and technology transfer. There exists a broad range of literature discussing the impact of FDI on economic development. Amongst those studies, it is universally agreed upon that FDI positively influences the economic growth of a country and a region. Still, some researchers have found that FDI leads to negative effects on the economic growth of a host nation. Only a few studies have focused on specific FDI from one nation or the influence on diverse developing countries. As such, my study aims to fill gaps within this research.The proposed study examines the impact of Chinese-specific FDI on the growth and economic performance in six Asian states – Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The research will use a cross-country log-linear regression, analyzing the data from 2010 to 2019. To my understanding, no study has specifically examined the effect of Chinese FDI on growth and economic performance using a similar time range. The data from the selected six Asian countries will help identify the variations of FDI on the economic development of the entire region. I will contain all relevant data for all nations within the panel data set. By focusing on these countries and the particular time range, I will help improve the existing literature.

The Impact of Chinese Foreign Direct Investment on Growth and Economic Performance of Asian Countries

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2023 im Fachbereich VWL - Internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen, Note: 2,3, Hochschule Bremen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, den Europäischen Emissionshandel systematisch zu analysieren und Möglichkeiten für seine Verbesserung aufzuzeigen. Die Arbeit soll demonstrieren, dass der Europäische Emissionshandel ein kosteneffizientes und wirksames Instrument gegen den Klimawandel ist, welches bereits zu einer Reduktion von Treibhausgasemissionen in der EU beigetragen hat. Es wird jedoch auch hervorgehoben, dass der Emissionshandel in seiner aktuellen Form nicht ausreicht, um die Klimaziele der EU zu erreichen. Daher stellt sich die Frage, wie man ihn verbessern kann, um die gewünschte Wirkung zu erzielen. Die Analyse erfolgt anhand von Leitfragen, die sich aus naturwissenschaftlichen, umwelt-ökonomischen und klimapolitischen Aspekten des Emissionshandels ableiten. Zuerst stellt sich die Frage, ob ein europäischer Emissionshandel überhaupt notwendig ist. Im ersten Kapitel werden daher die Problematik des Klimawandels und seiner Folgen erklärt. Im zweiten Kapitel wird beantwortet, welche Rolle die Umweltökonomie beim Thema Klimawandel spielt und warum sie Marktversagen verursacht. Im dritten Kapitel wird die Eigenschaft des Klimawandels als öffentliches Gut analysiert und erklärt, warum der Staat beim Klimaschutz eingreifen muss. Aus der Notwendigkeit staatlichen Eingreifens ergibt sich die Frage, wie er dies tun sollte. In diesem Zusammenhang werden in Kapitel 4 die europäische Klimaschutzpolitik und ihre Ziele aufgezeigt. In Kapitel 5 werden die Maßnahmen und Instrumente, die dem Staat zur Verfügung stehen, dargestellt, und es wird erklärt, wie der Emissionshandel funktioniert. Anhand von Kriterien wie der ökonomischen Effizienz und der ökologischen Treffsicherheit wird beantwortet, ob der Europäische Emissionshandel als Instrument gegen den Klimawandel geeignet ist. Im Kapitel 6 wird die Entwicklung und der aktuelle Stand des Europäischen Emissionshandels aufgezeigt. Weiterhin stellt sich neben der grundsätzlichen Eignung als klimapolitisches Instrument die Frage, welchen Einfluss der Emissionshandel tatsächlich auf die Emissionen in der EU hatte. Im Kapitel 7 wird schließlich beantwortet, wie man den Emissionshandel verbessern könnte. Im letzten Kapitel werden die Ergebnisse der Analyse und die Antworten auf die Leitfragen vorgestellt und daraus Schlussfolgerungen für die Klimaschutzpolitik abgeleitet.

Cultural differences between Germany and China in Corporations. A case study of Bayer AG

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Management, course: Summer Symposium on US Foreign Policy, language: English, abstract: In this paper, I shall examine the alliance “NATO” and its strategic concept concerning the Ukraine conflict. Against this background, the central question that motivates this essay is: “Why has NATO's strategy changed during the Ukraine crisis?” To answer this topic, this scientific paper is based on the assumption that NATO’s strategy became more relevant in the Global Security Architecture with the beginning of the Ukraine war.  Even though numerous articles have already been published on this topic framework, the work aim is to present NATO in detail, clearly and concisely, as well as to work out the current position of the alliance towards Russia and its possible future role. The results shed light on the upcoming relevance of the relationship between Russia and NATO. The thesis consists of three chapters, the first of which is the introduction. The main contents of the work are divided into the following four sections—the first deals with NATO's strategy before the Ukraine war began. Based on the history of NATO from its inception to the present, I highlight the development of its tactics. The focus of the second part is the strategy since the Ukraine crisis. Furthermore, I would like to point out how NATO's strategy changed over time and explain the differences and the reasons for that in the last section. Support is provided by selected literature, current news such as the Washington Post and the New York Times, and publications by renowned think tanks like the Hudson and Brooking Institute. Moreover, the group discussion about foreign policy from the Summer Symposium in Washington, D.C., is also used as a source. In the third chapter, I answer the hypothesis and research question with the help of the information provided. Finally, I conclude by underlining NATO’s upcoming role regarding Russia and giving an outlook on the future relevance of the subject.

NATO's change in strategy during the Ukraine crisis

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 2,0, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg (Wirtschaftswissenschaften), language: English, abstract: Due to the fact that most personality examinations concentrate on the Chief Executive Officer, this master thesis provides an explanation for the gap in empirical studies regarding the traits narcissism, overconfidence and extraversion in the top executive team. The purpose is to state why the remaining executive team is not targeted yet in personality research. With the help of a literature review on 80 journals, the obstacles on analyzing character traits in top managers are taken into account. Hereby, the research settings are divided into two main categories: self-report measures and the outsider perspective, which uses unobtrusive indicators or linguistic features in order to detect the three traits. In this context, similarities and differences are specified and several limitations on converting current research designs towards the board team are pointed out. Further, this paper criticizes measurement methods which use unobtrusive indicators, as they do not consider the importance of the Top Management Team (TMT) as an intervening mechanism. As a last step,  this thesis provides a summary on the contributions to the gap in literature and recommends future research to stronger include the top team in regard of character attributes in order to detect firm performance more precisely.

Sie untersucht die Auswirkungen der WTO-Regelungen auf die internationale Handelslandschaft, diskutiert kontroverse Ansichten bezüglich der Handelsliberalisierung und analysiert die Relevanz der WTO im Kontext aktueller wirtschaftlicher Herausforderungen.In dieser detaillierten Analyse wird der Wandel des globalen Handelssystems seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg betrachtet, wobei ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die drastische Reduktion von Zöllen und Handelsbarrieren gelegt wird. Die Rolle der Welthandelsorganisation (WTO) in der Gestaltung dieser Entwicklung und die Kritik an ihren Handelspolitiken stehen im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung. Die Studie beleuchtet die technologischen, kapitalbezogenen, institutionellen und fähigkeitsorientierten Aspekte, die für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Volkswirtschaften entscheidend sind. Darüber hinaus wird die Gründungsgeschichte der WTO, ihre Struktur, Zuständigkeit und die Herausforderungen, denen sie sich gegenübersieht, einschließlich der Finanzkrise, analysiert. Argumente sowohl von Liberalisierungsgegnern als auch -befürwortern werden erörtert, um die Frage zu beantworten, ob die WTO eine Erfolgsgeschichte darstellt oder nicht.

Hinsichtlich der heterogenen Forschungsergebnisse und der feinen graduellen Unterschiede wird ein detaillierter Literaturüberblick dargelegt. Darüber hinaus werden neben den ökonomischen Determinanten auf die nicht-ökonomischen Glücksfaktoren und deren Bedeutung untersucht. Dazu wird der Glücksbegriff und dessen Komponenten, die in diesem Kontext wichtig sind, abgegrenzt. Zielsetzung ist ebenfalls die Wichtigkeit sozialstaatlicher Aspekte in Bezug auf das Glück zu untersuchen und ob demnach ein Zusammenhang vorliegt oder andere Erklärungsansätze existieren. Demnach ist es wichtig, der Frage nachzugehen, ob ausschließlich die großzügigen und universellen Sozialleistungen für die Zufriedenheit maßgeblich sind. Insofern ist es entscheidend zu klären, ob möglicherweise andere Einflüsse wirken und eine pauschale Annahme, dass ein sozialdemokratisches Wohlfahrtssystem per se zu mehr Zufriedenheit führt, zu oberflächlich ist. Diese Arbeit gibt hierfür einen aufschlussreichen Überblick und generiert einen Beitrag dazu, potenziellen neuen Forschungsbedarf im Bereich der partiellen Betrachtung der Determinanten zu erkennen und eine Grundlage für weitere Arbeiten zu erarbeiten. Mit der abschließenden explorativen Regressionsanalyse wird ein erster Versuch unternommen, einzelne Determinanten, die tendenziell für einen starken Sozialstaat charakteristisch sind, zu präzisieren. Zudem wird versucht den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Ausmaß eines Sozialstaates und dem Glück der Bürger zu beschreiben und mögliche Grenzen zu erkennen. Zu Beginn der Arbeit wird zunächst eine Abgrenzung des Glücksbegriffs erfolgen, um ein konsistentes Verständnis zu gewährleisten. Darauffolgend werden die unterschiedlichen Messmethoden der Glückserhebung und nicht-ökonomische Glücksfaktoren sowie deren Bedeutung diskutiert. Anschließend wird das Hauptaugenmerk auf die ökonomischen Determinanten von Glück gelegt, um aufzuzeigen, inwiefern diese das Glücksniveau tangieren. Darauf werden die Ergebnisse der zwei aktuellen Glücksberichte der Vereinten Nationen (UN) zusammengefasst und auftretende Unterschiede sowie Schwächen diskutiert. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bilden die Betrachtung sozialstaatlicher Modelle und deren Ausgestaltung im Hinblick auf den Zusammenhang mit einem hohen Glücksempfinden. Abschließend wird anhand einer Regression unter Verwendung von Querschnittsdaten der OECD explorativ untersucht, wie stark der Einfluss ökonomischer und nicht-ökonomischer Determinanten ist.

Seminar paper from the year 2024 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: This research paper examines the two-faced role of FDI in Ghana’s economy, environment, and food security. The research also explores the benefits of FDI in technology, infrastructure development and employment opportunities, especially in agriculture and renewable energy. However, it also looks at the negative impacts, including pollution of the environment, loss of forests, soil degradation, and social injustice, especially on farming communities reaping from small-scale farming. The study finds that FDI makes Ghana more competitive internationally, but in the long run, it causes pollution and food insecurity through the displacement of smallholder farmers. This study calls for more demonstration of commitment in formulating sound policies and regulation frameworks on sustainable development in Ghana to counter the adverse effects of FDI. In this way, the country will be able to fully utilize foreign investment while at the same time conserving its environment and feeding its people. The paper provides important suggestions for policymakers and stakeholders to refer to while developing future economic and environmental policies.

Foreign Direct Investment in Developing Economies

The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Environmental Development and Food Security in Ghana

Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, Berlin School of Economics and Law (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin), course: Internationale Economics, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, I ground my analysis in the Global production Network (GPN) approach, which in the literature also is associated with possibilities of “strategic coupling” and asks for an analysis of “value capture trajectories”. But can the promise of such as “value capture trajectory” be observed in the case of the Nordmann fir GPN for the Racha region, from which the seeds of Christmas trees originate? 

The master thesis seeks to examine prospects for regional development in the Racha region in Georgia. The central research question of the master thesis is thus posed as: “To what extent does the Nordmann fir global production network contribute to development perspectives in the Racha region?” To answer this research question, I mainly draw on the Global Production Network literature (coupled with some perspectives from evolutionary economies) and analyze value creation, enhancement, and capture trajectories. 

Christmas is one of the largest religious celebrations of the Christian world. At the same time, consumer society as well as the marketing strategy of industries and retailers increasingly shift the spiritual character of Christmas towards materialist covetousness, leading to higher turnovers for supermarkets, large retailer, and industry. The annual demand for Christmas trees in Germany and Denmark is premised upon the seeds of Nordmann firs, which come exclusively from the Racha region in the Great Caucasus ridge of Georgia. It thus forms what is variously called a commodity chain, value chain or production network (as a phenomenon) and that can be accounted for with different concepts including Global Commodity Chains, Global Value Chains and Global Production Networks.
