Between 1968 and 1975, there was a subtle thawing of relations between East and West, for which Brezhnev coined the name Détente, and - perhaps - a chance to end the Cold War. The leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union, Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev, hoped to forge a new relationship between East and West. Yet, the greatest changes of the era took place outside the sphere of international diplomacy. The 1960s brought social collision across the world, from the anti-war protests in America to the student demonstrations on the streets of Paris, and Mao Zedong's Red Guards in China. A new generation, whom advertising executives dubbed the baby-boomers, brought new attitudes to towards sex, gender, race, the environment and religion. In this book, Richard Crowder explores the years of Détente, and introduces us to the key players of the era, whose stories form the narrative of this book.

Contemporary life in Britain is dominated by discussion of safety, risk and accidents. This monograph is the first to explore the history of modern safety culture in Britain and the evolution of ideas of accident prevention. It focuses on the railway industry between approximately 1871 (the date of the first specific state intervention in railway employee safety) and 1948 (the date at which the railways were nationalised).

Contemporary life in Britain is dominated by discussion of safety, risk and accidents. This monograph is the first to explore the history of modern safety culture in Britain and the evolution of ideas of accident prevention. It focuses on the railway industry between approximately 1871 (the date of the first specific state intervention in railway employee safety) and 1948 (the date at which the railways were nationalised). This period shows extremely important and far-reaching changes in how people dealt with safety and accident during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The railway industry was one of the first to introduce safety education into Britain. This study charts the shift from state legislative intervention and formal, punitive measures that required railway workers to be safe, to the introduction of an informal, accessible safety education campaign, which tried to persuade workers to act safely. Using visually attractive items - including posters, booklets, leaflets, and films - people were shown what to do and what not to do. How this happened, and the uses to which safety education and accident prevention have been put have not been examined. The book will draw upon and develop relevant insights from business history, labour history the history of occupational health and safety, and medical history. Readers will find particular value in the analysis of ways in which state, unions, managers and workers interacted to produce dominant understandings of safety.

Popes and the Papal Court, 1503-1655 is the first book-length account of the early modern papal court in English. As well as bringing together art historical, social, and political studies in several languages, it contains a wealth of primary source material, such as advice manuals for cardinals and aspiring courtiers, accounts of Roman festivals, reports of visiting ambassadors and news reports from Rome deposited in the Vatican library. The book argues that during the 16th and 17th centuries, popes were conscious to varying degrees of their responsibilities to conserving and enhancing the status of the monarchy as something larger than themselves as individuals or their families, and as such they exhibited some characteristics of dynastic monarchies. Toby Osborne explores how the culture of the papal court and the ways in which it functioned as a point of contact between the ruler, certain elites, and other princes not only had similarities with dynastic states, but also set the standard for court life around Europe. By bringing to light recent scholarship written by continental historians, Popes and the Papal Court, 1503-1655 represents an important contribution to the scholarly endeavour to better understand the political culture of the papal states and the workings of the papal monarchy. As such, it will be illuminating reading for all students and scholars interested in early modern court history.

And when there were no more quarrels to be had, it explains how in the final years British diplomats and their political masters managed the reversion they had not wanted.
