Fitzpatrick Sheila: The Death of Stalin

The Death of Stalin

It was the deadliest terrorist attack of the twentieth century, a bombing which shocked the world. But was the wrong person found guilty?December 21, 1988. All flights between London and New York are full, except for Pan Am 103, where almost half the seats are empty. Thirty-eight minutes after take-off, as the plane flies over the tiny Scottish village of Lockerbie, a bomb explodes in the hull. All 259 people aboard perish. The attack is not a surprise - American diplomats had been warned not to fly with Pan Am - but the flight goes ahead. Eleven years later, a Libyan national is convicted of orchestrating the attack, a judgement which has been increasingly questioned and scrutinized due to its political implications and the fact that no physical evidence was found to tie the man to the crime. In late 2022, journalist Jan Stocklassa is trawling through the late Stieg Larsson's archive of documents when he discovers that the world-famous crime author had been investigating the Lockerbie bombing prior to his death, and he picks up the trail. Who was really behind the terrorist attack? Was it just a coincidence that the flight was half-empty that day? And who stands to benefit the most from the truth being buried all these years?Full of intrigue, scandal and drama, The Man Who Fell From The Sky is a breathless rollercoaster which lifts the lid on a real-life international conspiracy, a deadly plot, and one man's relentless fight for the truth.

What does it mean to be governed and what does it mean to resist? Examining how communities form amidst social and political turbulence, this open access book presents four case studies that demonstrate the power of organic social formations over imposed order. Understanding this formation of community in terms of 'ungovernability' and a 'poetics of resistance',Ungovernable Spaces charts a movement from oppression, through transformation, into imagining, and finally emergence. Throughout the book, the authors engage methods of situated practice and related modes of writing and image-making to consider a range of global case studies: the destruction of the Mecca apartment building in Chicago's South Side in 1952, following a decade of resistance from the building's predominantly African American occupants; M.K. Gandhi's practices of social activism including the Salt March protest of 1930, and the daily practice of spinning and intermittent fasts; the Ciudad Abierta (Open City), a radical pedagogical experiment started by a poet and an architect in Valparaíso, Chile in 1970; and, finally, the urban ecologies developing on either side of Belfast's 'peace walls' in the wake of the Troubles and 1998's Good Friday Agreement. Structured via four spatial configurations - the grid, the charkha, the constellation, and the cluster -each case study explores community formation through artistic and aesthetic practices that resist and unsettle forms of hegemonic order. A truly interdisciplinary work at the intersection of poetry, art and spatial practice, Ungovernable Spaces argues for the importance of ethics, aesthetics, imagination and ecology in developing, of necessity, a new poetics of 'us.' Celebrated for its natural beauty and its abundance of wildlife, the Mekong river runs thousands of miles through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Its basin is home to more than 70 million people and has for centuries been one of the world's richest agricultural areas and a biodynamic wonder. Today, however, it is undergoing profound changes. Development policies, led by a rising China in particular, aim to interconnect the region and urbanize the inhabitants. In this new and comprehensively updated edition of Last Days of the Mighty Mekong, Brian Eyler gives his first-hand account of the impact on the river of the tumultuous political period since the book's original publication. From the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic and a devastating drought to the increasing political tensions and resource competition between China and Trump-era America, Eyler recounts his own increasing involvements in international efforts to protect this precious and delicate environment. Along the way he meets the region's diverse peoples, from villagers to community leaders, politicians to policy makers. Through conversations with them he reveals the urgent struggle to save the Mekong and its unique ecosystem.

Decisions are everywhere--from a group's choice of pizza to a decision on a family vacation to the elections of political leaders. Central to the functioning of our organizations is the belief that these decisions reflect the wishes of voters. Yet most voting rules are unreliable and can lead to unfair outcomes. And, while a large body of academic literature describes the flaws and limitations of standard voting methods, little is known about why they occur.

In Fair Voting Methods, Donald G. Saari explores the difficulties that have plagued social choice theory for over seventy-five years. Focusing on ranked choice voting and group decision-making, Saari expands on Arrow's impossibility theorem and presents a more precise statement: all standard voting rules either fail to always rank the candidates to determine who is preferred to whom, or the voting outcomes can result in inferior choices that are not what the voters wanted. Saari then identifies and resolves the structures that negatively impact voting systems. While Arrow's seminal result asserted that the problems of standard voting systems are unavoidable, Saari makes a bold and compelling case that there are indeed usable fair voting methods. He introduces one such method that achieves Arrow's objectives of always ranking candidates with outcomes that reflect voters' intent. The book concludes by applying insights from voting theory into other topics where parts are also assembled into wholes, including judgement aggregation, corporate structures, crime prevention, the US Electoral College, and standard scientific procedures.

Historische Geschlechterforschung

Contextualizing Art Markets

Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. After an extended historiographical introduction, the volume presents case studies and trends from 1860-1940, including: Jewish family businesses in Western Europe; the role of Jews as mediators of art from East Asia; the antisemitism and suspicion faced by Jewish dealers; Jews as theorists, exhibition makers and promoters of modern art ; and the geographical mobility and professional reinvention of Jewish dealers in times of economic and political crisis. With a wide variety of illustrations, including paintings, decorative arts, historic photographs and archival material, the volume adopts a mix of methodological approaches to analyse a key chapter in Jewish cultural history and in the history of the international art market. Includes Afterword by Charles Dellheim, author of Belonging and Betrayal: How Jews Made the Art World Modern (2021).

'An indelible and enthralling work of moral witness' PATRICK RADDEN KEEFE 'These questions of memory and impunity are forever timely' FINANCIAL TIMES 'An extraordinary achievement . . . I read with open mouth and thumping heart' STEPHEN FRYThe house at 38 Londres Street in Santiago, Chile, is home to the legacies of two men whose personal stories span continents, nationalities and decades of atrocity: Augusto Pinochet, President of Chile, and Walther Rauff, a Nazi SS officer responsible for the use of gas vans. In 38 Londres Street, Philippe Sands blends personal memoir, historical detective work and gripping courtroom drama to probe a secret double story of mass murder, one that reveals a shocking link between the horrors of the 1940s with those of our own times. In so doing, he reveals an untold and astonishing tale of the legacy of unchecked criminality and the road to impunity.'Combines the tone of the thriller with an astute and dramatic account of a most complex and fascinating legal case. The material assembled in this volume offers a deeper insight into Walter Eucken's attitudes, thought, and actions during the darkest years of Germany's history: the period of National Socialism. Although Eucken, like his associates, destroyed potentially incriminating documents after the failed assassination attempt by Count Stauffenberg on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, the surviving texts mark key stages in a process that ultimately led this determined opponent of the Nazi regime - an opponent from the very beginning - into active resistance against Hitler.

What rendered Eucken immune to National Socialism from the outset was his philosophically grounded abhorrence of the dissolution of the free individual into the collective, as is inherent in all totalitarian, especially
 völkisch
(ethno-nationalist) ideologies. His systematic opposition to the Nazi regime began with refusal, open protest, and confrontation, particularly in response to the rapid
 Gleichschaltung
(forced coordination) of the universities, Martin Heidegger's rectorship, and the dismantling of academic freedom by the Nazis. Following Germany's invasion of Poland and several ultimately unsuccessful attempts to exert positive influence on the centers of power in Berlin, his resistance culminated in a - necessarily cautious - participation in conspiratorial activities as an advisor and confidant to the plotters.

The texts in this volume include notes and sketches of ideas, completed manuscripts that remained unpublished during his lifetime, published essays, a transcript of the lecture "Kampf der Wissenschaften," the record of a public discussion with a Nazi district leader, an expert report commissioned by the Reich Ministry of Economics on possible "sources of war financing" at the end of 1939, the academically significant essay "Wettbewerb als Grundprinzip der Wirtschaftsverfassung" prepared within the Academy for German Law, the chapter Eucken authored for the "Primer of Economics" initiated by Carl Goerdeler, as well as the appendix he co-authored to the memorandum "Wirtschafts- und Sozialordnung" of the Bonhoeffer Circle. This memorandum was prepared on behalf of the Confessing Church with a view to a future world church conference planned for the time after the war and the hoped-for overthrow of Hitler. Retrospective additions include, among other things, Eucken's "Notizen über die Haltung der rechts- und staatswissenschaftlichen Fakultät in Freiburg während der Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus," his funeral oration for his prematurely deceased colleague Adolf Lampe, and drafts for an obituary of Hans Großmann-Doerth, with whom, together with Franz Böhm, Eucken had launched the research program of the Freiburg School: the development of a legal order conceived as an economic constitution, whose fundamental principle would be competition.

These materials make it possible to trace how Eucken, precisely through his confrontation with the rapidly escalating regime of injustice - with the enforced
 Gleichschaltung
, the increasing move toward a planned economy, the persecution of the Jews culminating in genocide, the other atrocities of the dictatorship, and the devastating Second World War - was able to sharpen his conception of a "humane and functional order," diametrically opposed to such a cataclysm. Eucken's theoretical design of a competitive order would later provide direction in the postwar years for the establishment of a social market economy in the young Federal Republic of Germany.

A revelatory and powerful testament of protest, courage and imprisonment in America's deportation regime. 'A searing account' - The Guardian 'A quietly shattering memoir' - New York Times 'Compelling and deeply human' - Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe 'An extraordinary book that everyone should read' - Kamila Shamsie 'Already a classic of dissident literature' - Pankaj Mishra 'This book will light a fire under you' - Mona Chalabi 'Are you Mahmoud Khalil?' With this question, ICE took the Palestinian student and US legal resident from his pregnant wife and home in New York City, transported him across the country and locked him up in a Louisiana detention camp under threat of deportation. His 'crime': exercising his right to free speech at Columbia University, where he emerged as a leading voice against the slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. No Land to Stand On is his indelible account of becoming the target of a lawless regime shredding basic rights. Drawing on his prison diary and writing in vivid, shocking detail, Mahmoud Khalil conjures the despair and cruelty of ICE detention, where prisoners can vanish overnight and visiting families risk their own deportation. In tandem, he tells the multigenerational story of a family expelled from Palestine to a Syrian refugee camp, of his flight from Assad's regime to Lebanon, of arrival in an America that promised permanence and protection, and of the enduring struggle for Palestine. An era-defining account of the cost of dissent and a work of immense courage, resistance and moral clarity, No Land to Stand On is a call to all of us to defend our right to safety, freedom and a place to call home. 'A defining document of our age' - Peter Beinart 'A rare chance to read history as it unfolds' - Yasmin Zaher ' A tale of courage in the face of unbelievable wickedness' - Benjamin Moser 'An unflinching account of what it costs to insist on one's dignity' - susan abulhawa

Protest, Palestine and Being Unfree in America

No Land to Stand On

For more than two decades, Marwan Barghouti has been held in an Israeli prison cell, much of that time in total isolation. Yet his voice has never been forgotten.Described by the Economist as 'the world's most important prisoner' and often referred to as Palestine's Mandela, Barghouti remains the most widely supported Palestinian political leader. As a long-standing advocate of peace grounded in justice and equality, he has become an enduring symbol of unity and hope - even from behind bars.Unbroken brings together, for the first time, a powerful and intimate portrait of Barghouti's life and struggle for a free Palestine: private letters to his family, personal writings, correspondence with global public figures, press interviews, public statements and rare personal photographs. This is his story, in his own words. Unsilenced, unbroken.
