Since their inception in 1930 as the British Empire Games, the Commonwealth Games have developed into one of the world’s major sporting mega-events, with 5,000 athletes competing in Glasgow 2014 representing countries covering one third of the world’s population. This is the first book to survey the entire history of the Commonwealth Games and to explore their significance in the context of sporting political history. It examines the relationship between the Games and the Commonwealth organisation more generally; evaluates the development of the Games themselves, and analyses the key issues which have shaped their political and historical development.

Contrary to the widely-held view that it was not until the late 1960s that Japan expanded its overseas investment, Japanese companies in fact had very extensive overseas interests, both portfolio and direct investments, in the early part of the twentieth century. Based on extensive original research, this book explores the causes, nature, characteristics, extent and impact of Japanese overseas investment before and during the Pacific War of 1941 to 45. The book shows that foreign investment was a major component of Japan's international expansion after the Meiji restoration, that in this period Japan was a lender rather than a borrower overseas, and that during the 1930s there was a massive outpouring of Japanese funds into the development of Manchuria, Korea, Formosa, and, to a lesser extent, Sakhalin and the mandated islands. The book examines Japanese investment in all of these areas; assesses the value of international business theories for understanding early Japanese foreign investment; and discusses the impact of the resources and profits procured on Japanese economic growth and the impact of the investments on the rapid post-war development of East Asia's 'newly industrializing countries'.

In 1946 and 1948, James Conway Davies published volumes one and two of his Episcopal Acts and Cognate Documents Relating to Welsh Dioceses 1066-1272. A notice in the front of volume two indicates that volume three - promised for publication in 1950/1 but never released - would have contained inter alia the acts of the dioceses of Bangor and St Asaph and an index of the acts contained in all three volumes. The editor left behind a massive card index and the galley proofs of the acts of St Asaph and Bangor, and it is these that form the basis of the present volume. It therefore completes what is both a monumental study on and source of information for the Church in medieval Wales.

These volumes included over 400 pages of introduction (on such topics as sources, the Norman conquest and its impact on the church in Wales, the formation of the bishoprics, diocesan boundaries, the status of St Davids, the structure of the church, etc.) and in calendar form the acts of the dioceses of St Davids and Llandaff. A notice in the front of volume two indicates that volume three would have contained inter alia the acts of the dioceses of Bangor and St Asaph and an index of the acts contained in all three volumes. Volume three was promised for publication in 1950/1, but for some reason never saw the light of day. The editor left behind a massive card index and the galley proofs of the acts of St Asaph and Bangor and it is these that form the basis of the present volume. It therefore completes what is both a monumental study on and source of information for the Church in medieval Wales.
