During the Seven Years' War (1756-63) the Caribbean region became the setting for major naval and military operations in which Britain engaged its imperial rivals, France and Spain. This book focuses primarily on the context of British recruitment of slaves in its Caribbean colonies and illustrates the significant contribution that these colonies made, beyond supplying slave labor, to the conquests of Guadeloupe and Martinique and of Havana in Cuba in an important theatre of the conflict.

To assist military forces that were sent out to the Caribbean in operations against French and Spanish targets, Britain endorsed the recruitment of slaves from its sugar colonies of Barbados, Jamaica, and the Leeward Islands.This book focuses primarily on the context of British recruitment of slaves in its Caribbean colonies and illustrates the significant contribution that these colonies made, beyond supplying slave labor, to the conquests of Guadeloupe and Martinique and of Havana in Cuba in an important theatre of the conflict – a war that helped turned secure Britain’s imperial hegemony for the best part of two further centuries.

After the German and Italian attack on Yugoslavia, Croatian fascists - the Ustasha - declared the independence of Croatia in April 1941. This short-lived state became one of the most significant theatres of genocide of wartime Europe, with these independent nationalists committing acts of violence against Serbs, Jews, and Roma.

Intertwined Genocides explores the patterns and the internal logic of the genocides carried out by Croatian fascists - the Ustasha - against Serbs, Jews, and Roma during the Second World War. Korb argues that the Croatian fascists were not German puppets, but strong-minded and largely independent agents, despite the German and Italian occupation of their country. They tried to transform their short-lived wartime Croatian state into a mono-ethnic nation-state by force. Whilst pursuing their violent agenda, they soon lost control over much of their territory owing to the armed resistance of their victims. What followed was an escalation of multiple layers of collective violence: local genocide, the German Holocaust, the occupiers' war against partisans, and an escalating civil war, all inextricably intertwined.

Because of this mix of perpetrators and their competing agendas, and because of the dynamics of violence and counter-violence, resistance and revenge, aggression and fear, Croatia became one of the most violent venues during the Second World War. Intertwined Genocides shows that South-eastern European nationalists carried out genocide independently of the Germans. Moreover, Alexander Korb brings critically important insights to the histories of violence, genocide, and its perpetrators: in a multi-ethnic society, genocide cannot be studied as an isolated phenomenon. Its dynamic escalation had dramatic effects on every ethnic group, and the victims' responses had a significant impact on the course of events throughout the Second World War, and into the latter half of the twentieth-century.

Not since Antonia Fraser's major biography (1975) has there been a life of Cromwell so sympathetic to its subject and based on so many years of scholarship and research. As General Editor for Oxford University Press of the five-volume edition of all the recorded words (writings and recorded speech acts) of Oliver Cromwell, Professor Morrill is perfectly equipped to write this biography. He argues that Cromwell has been seriously misinterpreted by historians, not least by left-wing thinkers such as Tony Benn, who claim Cromwell as their own and thus misunderstand the nature of Cromwell's political thought. This was a product of his religious ideas, and, argues the author, in this Cromwell was entirely sincere. After the Siege of Drogheda he murdered 3,000 people and Catholic clergy and the religious were killed on sight. He cast a long shadow over Irish history which appears to many to verge on genocide, but with this and the signing of the act of execution of Charles I, Cromwell never doubted that he was doing God's will. Morrill's book sheds exciting new light on Cromwell, both political and religious, and is based on the latest scholarship of the highest quality. Morrill argues against contemporary critics and claims that Cromwell was a man of fundamental sincerity and devotion to high Puritan principles.

This study is a vital reassessment of neglected medieval ruler King Carloman, who is so often found in the shadow of Charlemagne. Te information we have about him, transmitted by the Carolingian narrative texts or documents, has rarely been investigated before now. Marco Stoffella draws on a wide range of sources including letters, charters and diplomas to show that Carloman played a central political role in the Frankish kingdom which he ruled for three years. Stoffella suggests that it was Carloman, not Charlemagne, who was the Frankish king who married Gerberga, the Lombard princess. This emerging hypothesis leads to a reconsideration of further aspects of both Carloman's and Charlemagne's early careers. Evidence from minor annals that have been relatively disregarded until now, together with a fresh scrutiny of Pippin's and Carloman's diplomas, suggests that it was possibly Carloman rather than Charlemagne who was Pippin's first-born son. Following this interpretation, Carloman, Charlemagne and Dynastic Rivalries in the Eighth Century reflects on the extent and successfulness of Carolingian royal and imperial propaganda which re-shaped the early stages of Charlemagne's career, stressing his authority and blaming Carloman and his followers for the conflicts that emerged in Francia and in Italy between 768 and 771. The pro-Charlemagne sources even obscured the fate of the young king, and completely ignored the destiny of his wife and children. These new findings and arguments are expertly framed here and are of huge significance to our understanding of Charlemagne's conquest of the Lombard kingdom and policy south of the Alps.
