Why Modern States Should Abolish the ¿ud¿d Punishments

Beacon Islamic Studies Series

Us¿l ash-Sh¿sh¿ is a foundational text on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (us¿l al-fiqh) in the ¿anaf¿ school. Written over 800 years ago, it remains widely taught in South Asian seminaries and on the Dars-e-Niz¿m¿ syllabus. It deals with the salient themes and contentions in Islamic legal theory, such as the interpretation of primary Islamic sources, the resolution of conflicting Prophetic practices, and the classification of Islamic legal rulings.
This translation by Tahir Mahmood Kiani is notable for its concise explanations, extensive footnotes and relevant examples that highlight the core principles of ¿anaf¿ jurisprudence. As part of the Beacon Islamic Studies Series, the coursebook has been designed for educational institutions, with features such as lesson break icons, points-to-note boxes and end-of-chapter questions.

A Coursebook on the Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence According to the Hanafi School (Us¿l ash-Sh¿sh¿)

Written by the renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan and translated into elegant English by Prof. Farida Khanum, this edition serves as both an introduction for new readers and a source of deep reflection for serious students of Islam.

Islamic Creed based on Qur'an and Sunnah

Islam began as a call to conscience-the Qur'an spoke of justice, mercy, and human dignity long before anyone wrote a legal code. As the Muslim community grew into an empire, however, jurists, religious legal scholars, built a vast system of law to govern daily life. Over centuries, that system stopped looking like one interpretation among many. It became sacred. Final. Untouchable.
When Jurists Ruled the Faith asks a direct question: What happens to a religion when human legal decisions are treated as though they came from God?
Dr. Mark A. Gabriel traces how obedience to inherited law gradually replaced the freedom to reason and act on one's own conscience-not because Muslims chose obedience over morality, but because the system left little room for anything else. The result was a civilization in which law regulated worship, family life, commerce, criminal justice, warfare, gender relations, and relations with non-Muslims, often through claims of divine authority mediated by jurists.
Drawing upon Islamic history, Qur'anic interpretation, jurisprudence, and modern human-rights thought, this book examines how juristic authority became embedded in Muslim institutions and why meaningful reform continues to face resistance.
This is not an argument against Muslim faith or against Muslims. It is a serious examination of the human institutions that claimed the power to speak in God's name. By distinguishing revelation from the legal structures later built around it, When Jurists Ruled the Faith opens a path toward intellectual honesty, moral responsibility, freedom of conscience, and genuine reform.

How Islamic Law Replaced Conscience with Obedience

When Jurists Ruled the Faith

The Glorious Caliphate by S. Athar Husain presents a detailed historical and administrative study of the Khil¿fat-e-R¿shidah (11-40 A.H. / 632-661 A.D.), the formative era of Islamic governance following the passing of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Drawing upon classical Islamic sources and historical accounts, the work examines the lives, policies, and reforms of the first four Caliphs-Ab¿ Bakr, ¿Umar, ¿Uthm¿n, and ¿Ali (may Allah be pleased with them). The book situates their leadership within the broader framework of Qur'¿nic guidance and Prophetic Sunnah, highlighting the ethical principles, legal foundations, and administrative structures that shaped the early Islamic polity.
Part One narrates the life and achievements of each Caliph, tracing the transition from Prophetic mission to institutionalized governance. Part Two analyzes the administrative systems established under their rule, including civil administration, financial policy, judicial organization, military structure, and public works.
Particular attention is given to the development of the Bayt al-M¿l (State Treasury), taxation policies (Zak¿t, Khar¿j, Jizyah), judicial appointments, advisory councils, and military regulations. The study demonstrates how ethical restraint, accountability before Allah, and commitment to justice remained central to early Islamic governance.
Written in clear English and supported by references to classical authorities, this volume is suited for scholars, students of Islamic law and history, and institutional libraries seeking a structured presentation of the early Caliphate as a model of principled statecraft.

The Glorious Caliphate

A thoughtful and timely response to the many questions surrounding the place of women in Islam, this book offers clarity without defensiveness, depth without complexity, and truth without polemics. Written by a respected academic, it draws from both authentic Islamic sources and the realities of contemporary society, making it especially relevant for students, educators, and readers interested in faith, gender, and justice.
The chapters explore a woman's spiritual standing, legal rights, role in the family and society, and contributions throughout history, dispelling myths and addressing misconceptions along the way. The tone is balanced and direct, avoiding over-idealization while refusing to accept distorted narratives.
This is not a book about comparison or critique of other cultures-it is an invitation to understand how Islam sees women as honored, responsible, and capable, not despite their identity as women, but because of it. For Muslim readers, it may serve as a gentle reminder; for others, it may offer a new lens through which to view a faith often misrepresented.
Dignity, agency, and purpose-these are the cornerstones of the portrait drawn here.

A Woman in Islam with her Rights and Dignity

The Rise and Fall of the Muslims is an analytical and critical study of Islamic history examining the moral, spiritual, and political factors that shaped the trajectory of Muslim civilization. Authored by Maulana Saeed Akbar Abadi, the work traces the formative period of Islamic governance from the era of the Khulaf¿¿ al-R¿shid¿n through the Umayyad, Abbasid, Ottoman, Andalusian, and Mughal periods.
The book situates political authority within the Qur'¿nic framework of taw¿¿d (Divine Unity), taqw¿ (piety), justice, and public accountability. It highlights how adherence to revelation, ethical governance, and supervision of authority contributed to early Muslim ascendancy, while internal dissension, moral decline, administrative corruption, and weakening of religious commitment are identified as causes of deterioration.
Major themes include:The Caliphate and its juristic foundations
Governance under Banu Umayyah and Banu Abbas
The Ottoman (¿l-e-¿Usm¿n) polity and its decline
Muslim rule in Andalusia and India
Spiritual and intellectual vitality as civilizational foundations
Causes of degeneration in political and moral life

The work adopts a reflective historiographical method, combining narrative history with moral analysis. Rather than presenting political theory in modern ideological terms, it frames Muslim ascendancy and decline through adherence to, or departure from, Qur'¿nic principles and prophetic guidance.
This volume is suitable for scholars, students of Islamic history, and institutional libraries seeking a comprehensive interpretive account of Muslim political civilization within its classical religious framework.

Role of hadith in the promotion of Islamic Climate and Attitudes

This comprehensive work explores the spiritual, social, and intellectual dimensions of the four foundational acts of worship in Islam-Salat (prayer), Zakat (almsgiving), Saum (fasting), and Hajj (pilgrimage). Going far beyond mere ritual, the author examines the deeper wisdom, moral vision, and civilizational relevance of these duties, drawing from Qur'anic texts, Prophetic traditions, and classical Islamic scholarship.
Rather than treating these acts as isolated obligations, the book reveals how they form an integrated framework that shapes both individual character and community life. With clarity and precision, it highlights their inner meanings, transformative effects, and ethical implications, while also addressing how these duties have been misrepresented or diluted under modern pressures.
The author's approach is not only rooted in classical sources, including Shah Waliullah's seminal insights, but is also mindful of contemporary challenges. This makes the book particularly useful for readers who seek to reconnect with Islamic practice without losing sight of spiritual purpose or social integrity.
The final chapters provide a comparative reflection on worship in other faiths, offering a broader perspective on what distinguishes Islamic devotion in both form and spirit.
Essential for educators, students of Islamic thought, and anyone seeking a richer understanding of faith-based practice, this book is both a resource and a renewal.
