Waste is omnipresent, with consequences that are increasingly visible. Despite considerable efforts by the waste-management sector to keep waste out of sight and out of mind, current waste levels pose a challenge to the welfare of today and tomorrow, from the squandering of resources to lasting environmental harm.Understanding Waste provides a multidisciplinary introduction to the diversity of waste, including its definitions, physical properties and governance. It describes the spatial rationales for waste from local to global levels, stressing the injustices that characterise how waste is collected and processed. Dans un contexte où les industries agroalimentaires sont confrontées à des exigences croissantes en matière de durabilité, la problématique centrale vise à déterminer comment valoriser efficacement les drêches afin de réduire leur impact environnemental tout en générant une valeur ajoutée économique. Pour répondre à cette question, une démarche méthodologique intégrée a été mise en oeuvre, combinant revue de littérature, caractérisation physico-chimique, observations terrain, enquêtes auprès des acteurs, ainsi qu'une série d'outils de diagnostic (SWOT, diagramme d'Ishikawa, grille 3P, analyse multicritères) permettant d'évaluer les pratiques existantes et les perspectives de valorisation. Les résultats montrent que les drêches constituent un coproduits à fort potentiel, riche en protéines, fibres et matières organiques, mais dont la valorisation demeure limitée à l'alimentation animale brute. Cette filière, bien que dominante, souffre de contraintes technologiques (forte humidité, absence de séchage), logistiques (coûts de transport, périssabilité), économiques (faible valeur ajoutée) et institutionnelles. L'analyse multicritères révèle que des options alternatives telles que la pelletisation, la production de matériaux composites, ou encore des applications agroalimentaires offrent des perspectives de valorisation plus performantes sur le plan environnemental, technico-économique et stratégique.

The problem of economic development in the Global South was recognized as one of the defining challenges of the twentieth century.
