The Millowners' Association Building in Ahmedabad, designed by Le Corbusier and completed in 1954, has rarely been published, but is nevertheless considered an important milestone in the architect's work. In particular, the building influenced his later work, such as the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard. This book documents the building and relates it to Le Corbusier's theoretical work, especially Vers une architecture. The significance of key figures such as Paul Valéry and John Ruskin for Le Corbusier's work is explained. Characteristic design elements such as the promenade architecturale and the use of brise-soleils are explored. In addition to numerous scaled drawings, newly produced models clarify the most important design aspects of the building. Sustainable Urbanisation in the Caribbean critically examines the socio-geographic context of island states, prioritising the nuanced experiences of Caribbean island states and territories that are largely considered small island developing states (SIDS), against the backdrop of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Increases in urban density place enormous pressure on existing infrastructures and natural resources, exacerbating social inequalities and environmental risks. While the UN SDGs aim to mitigate these risks, the reality of implementing these goals in the context of SIDS is complex. Whereas Sustainable Urbanisation in the Caribbean does not claim to be a comprehensive assessment of policy responses to the SDGs, this edited volume seeks to generate problem-focused, policy-relevant, demand-driven research, thereby permitting the geographical contexts of island states to contribute to the development of proper causal theory about sustainable urbanisation.This book will be of interest to students of public policy, urban sustainability and climate change, as well as government policy analysts, development practitioners, urban planners and UN agencies working in SIDS.

The dominant discourse views the Indian economy's transformation over several decades as a progression towards a grand, unified, and dynamic market economy. Critiquing this discourse, The Nonfarm Economy illustrates the prevalence and intensification of 'structural dualism'. Using both theoretical and empirical perspectives, Bhattacharjee, Chakrabarti, and Rajeev analyse the origins of this persistence and the deepening of a dualistic developmental pattern. By studying the Indian rural economy and parts of the rural Global South, they demonstrate how the contemporary capital-centric growth process itself has induced the intensification of dualism, alongside factors such as population growth and land fragmentation. Only a limited segment of the impoverished population can integrate with the expanding circuits of capital using their skills, resources, and networks; a large mass of people is thus pushed towards dispossession and exclusion. The book further examines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on this development pattern, demonstrating how it has intensified the phenomenon of structural dualism. Contrary to the current prescriptions fixated on formal sector growth and policies extending government support, the authors posit a labour-focused (cluster-based) development model and offer constructive policy recommendations for achieving inclusive growth.

This book is a memorial to Professor Paul Benneworth who died in 2020 at the age of 46, but also a review of the current state of the art in work on universities and place, identifying important new directions for research. The book showcases Paul's contribution, authored by those who worked with him, engaging with key ideas that Paul pursued and on which he was actively working.The chapters are grouped around three main themes. The first theme is focused on universities, cities and regions and examines the ways in which universities are embedded in place, with a particular emphasis on the governance of university-place relations and an international set of examples and case studies. This includes cross-institutional partnerships and also the physical consequences of university locations. A second theme is around local and global networks including the knowledge exchange process involving the university and business. These networks include social dynamics and social enterprise, as well as the role of academic diaspora in international knowledge exchange. The third theme then looks at regions and leadership and the strategic role of different stakeholders in place development. The book also includes a summary of Paul's life and work and a list of his writings.

Universities, Knowledge and Places

A profound social change can be observed in the areas of mobility, work and trade, as well as in the practice of faith, especially in cities. As a result, certain building typologies such as petrol stations, offices, shopping centers, cinemas and churches are being used less, thus becoming increasingly obsolete and contributing to the obsolescence of the city.
