This book provides a comprehensive contemporary and timely account of the protection of indigenous knowledge in Africa by examining issues such as the nature of indigenous knowledge as part of indigenous property and as the fulcrum of indigenous communities in Africa. Acknowledging the centrality of the members of communities of origin in the production and reproduction of indigenous knowledge, this book discusses options to manage the tension between members of the community, communities of origin and their political community.Furthermore, the book abandons the conceptual distinction between ‘negative’ and ‘positive’ protection and turns towards a subject consideration of indigenous Scientific and Technical Indigenous Knowledge (STIK); indigenous heritage; indigenous designs; indigenous music; indigenous audio-visual, indigenous signs expressions and terms as well as the indigenous literary works that are examined within the context of case studies of the indigenous knowledge human and peoples’ rights. The book concludes that Africa’s modest record of the protection of indigenous knowledge must factor in its extensive use as the foundation of Africa’s entertainment industry and recommends a tripod of ‘community’ ‘participation’ and ‘reward as principles of effective protection.Building on the 2017 title of ‘The Protection of Traditional Cultural Expressions in Africa” this book adopts a mixed method of a legal pluralistic account of indigenous knowledge; using intellectual property as a lens to view indigenous knowledge and a cultural production account of indigenous knowledge and will be useful to intellectual property lawyers; sociologists; economists; Africanists; innovation law and policy specialists and legal practitioners.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Mental Health, Crime and Justice&lt;/em&gt; brings together original and state of the art contributions from theoretical, empirical, and policy-related scholarship concerned with the ways people with mental health illnesses are understood, ‘managed’, ‘controlled’ and responded to. Drawing on critical scholarship from a variety of disciplines, the collection pays careful attention to the controversial relationship between mental health and crime, as well as key issues relating to justice and social harm. It presents a synthesis of discipline-specific approaches, from law, psychiatry, sociology, and criminology, but will also bridge together developments in both theory and practice.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The book explores the relationship between mental health and crime by deconstructing and analysing two important facets of the justice system: (1) the various ways in which people with mental disorder navigate and are navigated through the criminal justice (and forensic mental health) system(s); and (2) how so called ‘problematised populations’ are governed, with a particular emphasis on mental health as an unfolding dimension of social harm.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Unique to this volume, well-rehearsed debates are cross-examined with contemporary critiques about social harm and justice. By considering the multifaceted dimensions of violence to include ‘gendered’, ‘structural’, and ‘systemic’, this book provides a nuanced insight that exposes the controversial relationship that is said to exist between mental health and crime. This book attempts to understand and address the psycho-social dynamics behind South Africa’s moral crisis. It describes South Africa as afflicted by state capture, violence, corruption, and the looting of state infrastructure thirty years after the establishment of democracy. It then provides a holistic, social diagnosis of this problem that integrates the findings of different disciplines into an overall picture of the forces at work in South Africa's collective moral decline.

Ultimately, this book engages with the deeper psycho-social phenomena behind South Africa’s moral decline, arguing that the diagnostic question of why this moral decline has taken place must be answered before turning to the normative question of what ought to happen in this situation. Accordingly, this book explores themes regarding the innate moral capacities of the human person, the effects of need pressures and systemic pressures on ethical decision-making, and the phenomena of distorted motivational drives and distorted behavioral responses. It shows how the framing of virtue-centered moral identities might act as buffers against moral disengagement strategies and assist in promoting pro-social behavior. It then specifies the macro-social changes required to create such an ethical-social climate.

The book is of interest to social scientists, ethicists, behavioral scientists, educators, theologians, and moral philosophers. In the end, this case study of South Africa shows us more broadly how maintaining public morality and social cohesion is a challenge that most modern societies face.

This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other.&nbsp;It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically. Patrick Bond is a political economist and professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent more than two decades teaching at the Wits University School of Governance in Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban. During the late 1980s he pursued doctoral studies in economic geography at Johns Hopkins University, while learning politics in the anti-apartheid, labour, student and community movements. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry in President Nelson Mandela’s office, drafting the democratic government’s first White Paper and a dozen other major policy documents. He appears more than 100 times a year on South African and international broadcast media, and usually gives more than 50 guest lectures annually.

‘Whiteness’ is an omnipresent term within research on race and racism. This book differs from existing conceptualizations by adopting a psychoanalytic line of approach and by directing its attention to a particular socio-historical instantiation of whiteness—the investments, fantasies and fears apparent within (post) apartheid South African contexts. It foregrounds the notion of ‘white anxiety’, which is conceptualized not only via notions of psychical temporality, but with reference to the dystopian visions of the future, ideas of inter-generational guilt, and fantasies of demise. To posit an imagined ‘end to whiteness’ is not, of course, an uncontroversial gesture; the closing section of the book surveys the key themes—antisemitism, white Nationalism, the trope of the race traitor—in online attacks the author was subjected to. This compelling work will appeal to all those with an interest in psychoanalytic approaches to race and racism, and to anyone working in the areas of critical race and whiteness studies.
