How games create beauty and meaning, and how we can use them to explore the aesthetics of thought. Are games art? This question is a dominant mode of thinking about games and play in the twenty-first century, but it is fundamentally the wrong question. Instead, Frank Lantz proposes in his provocative new book, The Beauty of Games, that we think about games and how they create meaning through the lens of the aesthetic. We should think of games, he writes, the same way we think of literature, theater, or music—as a form that ranges from deep and profound to easy and disposable, and everything in between. Games are the aesthetic form of interactive systems, a set of possibilities connected by rules of cause and effect. In this book, Lantz analyzes games from chess to poker to tennis to understand how games create beauty and evoke a deeper meaning. He suggests that we think of games not only as hyper-modern objects but also as forms within the ancient context of artistic production, encompassing all of the nebulous and ephemeral qualities of the aesthetic experience.

Aesthetics and Contemporary Art

James Hyde, a practicing painter, boldly revises the concept of space in the European history of art. He presents it as a concept bound to historical circumstance, developing -sometimes contentiously-in philosophy, mathematics and science, and finally emerging in 20th century theorizations of art. Using primary documents, Hyde exposes what many will find surprising-that space only becomes part of the descriptive and analytic apparatus of art and architecture at the turn of the 20th century, not earlier. Hyde examines narratives that have shaped our understanding of the history of art and their explanatory efficacy in the context of the transformations of 13th and 15th century Italian art. He offers insights into the relationship between painting, architecture, icons and narrative pictures, the effects of St. Francis's miracles on painting and the essential diagrammatical nature of Renaissance perspective. The arrival of space into discussions about art introduces Kant, Leibniz, Apollonaire and Adolf von Hildebrand into the story. Hyde considers how and why artists and historians appropriated space at the end of the 19th century, as well as how space moved from the discourse of Neoclassical sculpture and Cubism to its prominence in discussions of art today. Hyde's original reading of the definition of space and the cultural forces that shaped it provides a re-envisioning of the foundations of art history and the philosophy of art.

Through a focused analysis of work made from textile, ceramic, metal, paper, wood and glass, this book explores how contemporary craftspeople, artists and other creatives identifying as LGBTQ+ use a range of craft materials and processes to explore their identity and queerness. Queer Crafts demonstrates how methods of crafting offer particularly fertile ground for exploring themes of queerness because of their longstanding gendered associations, physical malleability, metaphorical capaciousness and craft's historic position as an 'amateur' form of making. International case studies include the work of well-known and emerging creatives such as Athi-Patra Ruga, LJ Roberts, Nicki Green, Rose Schmits, Khairullah Rahim, Hansel Tai, Troy Michie, Antonius Bui, Raul De Lara, Caroline Woolard, Tim Tate and Hamad Butt. Featuring interviews and oral histories, and richly illustrated throughout with an array of works which refuse binaries and the boundaries of traditional craft practices, contemporary art and design, this book sheds an important light on contemporary LGBTQ+ crafting.
