Tesla, Inc. Strategic Expansion and Value Creation through the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg

Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1,0, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: This study investigates the impact of environmental, social, and governance integration on private equity fund performance, as measured by the UN Principles of Responsible Investment signatory status of the general partner. Using a comprehensive dataset of 3,127 private equity funds from the Preqin database and ESG information from the UN Principles of Responsible Investment directory, I find that funds managed by fund managers who signed the UN Principles of Responsible Investment exhibit a negative association with financial performance.Since the 1980s, the private equity (PE) asset class has developed from an alternative investment niche into a major player in the global financial industry. With assets under management (AuM) growth rates that far outstrip most other asset classes, PE plays an increasingly important role. For example, authors from the Harvard Busi-ness Review expect global PE assets to exceed $11tn in 2026 and state that, already today, around 10,000 PE firms are responsible for 20mn employees in approximately 40,000 portfolio companies. Simultaneously, integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into investment decisions has gained considerable momentum in recent years. Driven by growing awareness of climate change, social ine-qualities, and corporate governance issues, investors increasingly recognize the im-portance of incorporating non-financial factors into their investment analysis and portfo-lio selection. Speaking in numbers, at the beginning of 2020, the total value of sustainable investments across major asset classes in developed markets rose to $35.3tn, representing a growth of 15% between 2018 and 2020. This results in 35.9% of total AuM during this period.The social relevance of the climate challenge and the associated increasing investment in the sustainable transformation of the global economy has thus logically found its way into the academic world. For example, annual academic publications on environmental finance have grown more than 17-fold, from 13 in 2010 to 223 in 2019. Nevertheless, less than 1% of academic litera-ture on PE or venture capital (VC) between 1960 and 2020 deals with sustainability issues.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2021 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: Distinction (4.81), Wilberforce Island (Post Graduate School), course: Banking and Finance, language: English, abstract: The study examines the determinants of access to and usage of financial services in sub-Saharan Africa. The study employed panel data spanning 2006 to 2018 from 12 sub-Sahara African countries. The ex-post facto research design and econometric techniques were employed to explain the determinants of financial inclusion. The descriptive statistics was employed to describe the nature of the data. The LLC and IPS tests of stationarity indicated that all the variables were stationary at first difference. The Pearson pairwise correlation test revealed that the strength of association among the regressors were weak. The panel data was estimated using Pooled OLS, Fixed Effects, and Random Effects panel estimation techniques. The findings show that aside GDP per capita and political stability that had insignificant effect on access; money supply and regulatory quality had a significant effect on access to financial services. Furthermore, the findings suggest that aside from regulatory quality and deposit rate, GDP per capita and automated teller machine exerts a significant effect on financial usage. The study further reveals that money supply and lending rate significantly stimulates usage of loan accounts, while regulatory quality was insignificant. The study concludes that a combination of macroeconomic, institutional, and bank-level factors determine the level of financial inclusion in sub-Saharan Africa. The study recommends that regulators should encourage a conducive environment that spurs competition and innovation in the private sector. This may encourage financial access and usage due to economic growth and rising GDP per capita levels. Regulators should adopt policies like Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) in order to enhance the regulatory quality and boost public confidence. Regulators and banks should encourage the expansion of the number of functional point of service outlets in the region. Finally, government agencies should formulate policies that would encourage socio-political stability for the financial service industry to strive in the region.

The main objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the key, systemic and underlying trends in these three underlying disciplines and to identify potential areas for regulatory action.This paper finds academic evidence in the area of public equity offerings that regulatory initiatives can be effective and tilt the balance between private and public equity finance towards more regulated and transparent markets. It is also essential to acknowledge that this rebalancing was supported by financial innovation and it remains doubtful whether the JOBS Act can be as effective in the absence of similar innovation at the core of the IPO product, which remains locked between excessive underwriting fees and unresolved conflicts of interest in the analyst community, a key support function.
