How visual fantasies of violence, animality, and political agency offered an alternative image of masculinity during the Enlightenment &nbsp; Centering on animal bodies and assertive masculinity, the visual strategies of hunting art may appear incongruent with our understanding of Rococo aesthetics and the early Enlightenment. But these themes, embraced with enthusiasm by artists and patrons, inspired artworks in every genre and medium in eighteenth-century France. As the country expanded its colonial empire, the absolute monarchy existed in tension with ambitious elites, and the Enlightenment eroded old certainties about selfhood and society, hunting art provided a visual language of personal and national sovereignty written with bodies of men and animals. Amy Freund revises our received notions of eighteenth-century French art and culture, confronting us with a visual culture of animality, violence, and death: a Rococo of dogs and guns. &nbsp; Noble Beasts highlights the work of François Desportes, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and others who, operating from the heart of institutions such as the Royal Academy and the Gobelins manufactory, produced an astonishing volume of highly accomplished work. The book draws on the critical frameworks of human-animal studies and on Enlightenment philosophical debates to explore how and why hunting art’s aesthetic and political claims blurred the lines between human and animal.

A reconsideration of Filippino Lippi’s transformative Roman period and the ensuing evolution of his innovative style, as reflected in his Holy Family tondo in Cleveland—a masterpiece that exemplifies this pivotal phase in his career &nbsp; Between 1488 and 1493, leading Florentine artist Filippino Lippi (ca. 1457–1504) relocated to Rome to complete his celebrated frescoes in the funerary chapel of Neapolitan cardinal Oliviero Carafa in the major Dominican church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. During this time, Filippino also painted a magnificent tondo for Carafa: The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Margaret. Focusing on this seminal work in his oeuvre, Filippino Lippi and Rome traces the arc of the painter’s artistic practice before, during, and after his Roman period, illuminating the evolution of his processes and iconographic ingenuities. This in-depth study presents new scholarship on the inspiration Filippino found in the Eternal City and how The Holy Family tondo—the only known independent work produced by Filippino in Rome—influenced artists from Raffaellino del Garbo to Jan Gossaert to Leonardo da Vinci. Moreover, the essays and catalogue entries in this volume draw on recent technical analyses that had, for the first time, revealed the tondo’s underdrawing and pentimenti, shedding new light on Filippino’s painting techniques. The Scharf Collection is a German private collection of French art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and international contemporary art. Proposing the new term - artistic provenance research - the contributors to this innovative book illuminate art's capacity to expand provenance research in critical and provocative ways. Presenting in-depth examination of fascinating historical and contemporary examples, contributors to Artistic Provenance Research investigate knowledge-imagination dynamics, and questions of materiality, experimentation and speculation. They probe relationships between presences and absences, the aesthetic and the ontological, the scientific and the curatorial. The cases address a wide range of pressing issues of contemporary heritage research and practice, including those of colonialism and decolonization, ownership and art-markets, institutionalization, human remains, return and restitution.
