NEW WORLDS FOR OLD

Enriched edition. A Plain Account of Modern Socialism

In "Criminal Man, According to the Classification of Cesare Lombroso," Gina Lombroso intricately explores the controversial theories of her father, Cesare Lombroso, who is often hailed as the father of criminology. This groundbreaking work, framed within the context of late 19th-century scientific thought, examines the biological and psychological traits purportedly distinguishing criminals from non-criminals. With a meticulous literary style that balances empirical research and vivid case studies, Gina Lombroso elucidates her father's classification system, drawing upon morphological features, behavioral patterns, and social conditions that characterize criminality in an attempt to legitimize or critique the deterministic notions of her time. Gina Lombroso, an accomplished psychiatrist and a prominent figure in feminist criminology, was significantly influenced by her father's pioneering theories and the sociopolitical landscape of her era. Her background in the evolving fields of psychology and sociology, combined with her commitment to addressing the complexities of crime and morality, provided her with a unique vantage point to revisit and critically assess Lombroso's longstanding ideas, as well as their impacts on justice and society. This compelling examination is essential for scholars, criminologists, and general readers interested in the intersections of psychology, sociology, and criminal justice. Gina Lombroso's work invites readers to reflect on the implications of scientific theory on social norms and justice, making it a profound addition to the discourse surrounding crime and its understanding.

Criminal Man, According to the Classification of Cesare Lombroso

Karl Marx's monumental work, 'Capital,' in its complete 3 volume edition, revolutionized the field of political economy and continues to shape discussions on capitalism and socialism. In this groundbreaking text, Marx delves into the inner workings of capitalist society, exploring the mechanisms of production, exploitation, and class struggle. Written in a rigorous and analytical style, 'Capital' presents a thorough critique of the capitalist system, highlighting its inherent contradictions and injustices. The work is a cornerstone of Marxist theory, influencing generations of scholars and activists in their quest for social change. Karl Marx, a German philosopher and economist, was deeply troubled by the social inequalities and injustices of his time, leading him to develop his critique of capitalism in 'Capital.' Drawing on his research and observations of industrial society, Marx sought to expose the economic forces that shaped the lives of the working class. His analytical approach and theoretical insights have made 'Capital' a seminal text in the fields of economics, sociology, and political theory. For readers interested in understanding the roots of modern capitalism and exploring alternatives to the current economic system, 'Capital' by Karl Marx is a must-read. This comprehensive work offers a critical analysis of capitalism and provides valuable insights into the dynamics of class struggle and exploitation. Whether you are a student of political economy or a concerned citizen seeking to challenge the status quo, 'Capital' remains a relevant and thought-provoking study of the capitalist mode of production.

CAPITAL (Complete 3 Volume Edition)

Capital by Karl Marx is a foundational theoretical text in materialist philosophy, economics and politics. Marx aimed to reveal the economic patterns underpinning the capitalist mode of production, in contrast to classical political economists such as Adam Smith, Jean-Baptiste Say, David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill. Marx did not live to publish the planned second and third parts, but they were both completed from his notes and published after his death by his colleague Friedrich Engels. Capital is the most cited book in the social sciences published before 1950.Karl Marx (1818–1883) was a famous German philosopher, economist, historian, political theorist, sociologist, journalist and revolutionary socialist.

The Capital

Law and Criminology (R0)

The book is dedicated to the theoretical problems concerning ratio legis. In the contexts of legal interpretation and legal reasoning, the two most important intellectual tools employed by lawyers, ratio legis would seem to offer an extremely powerful argument. Declaring the ratio legis of a statute can lead to a u-turn argumentation throughout the lifespan of the statute itself – in parliament, or in practice during court sessions, when it is tested against the constitution.

Though the ratio legis argument is widely used, much about it warrants further investigation. On the general philosophical map there are many overlapping areas that concern different approaches to human rationality and to the problems of practical reasoning. Particular problems with ratio legis arise in connection with different perspectives on legal philosophy and theory, especially in terms of the methods that lawyers use for legal interpretation and argumentation. These problems can be further subdivided into particular aspects of activities undertaken by lawyers and officials who use the ratio legis in their work, and the underlying theories. In short, this book examines what ratio legis is, what it could be, and its practical implications.

How should a free society protect privacy? Dramatic changes in national security law and surveillance, as well as technological changes from social media to smart cities mean that our ideas about privacy and its protection are being challenged like never before. In this interdisciplinary book, Chris Berg explores what classical liberal approaches to privacy can bring to current debates about surveillance, encryption and new financial technologies. Ultimately, he argues that the principles of classical liberalism – the rule of law, individual rights, property and entrepreneurial evolution – can help extend as well as critique contemporary philosophical theories of privacy.

Chris Berg

The Classical Liberal Case for Privacy in a World of Surveillance and Technological Change

The book shows the ideological underpinning of the economist’s work, and the ideological perspectives are those that have largely prevailed in the last couple of centuries: liberalism, nationalism and socialism. It is on the ground and strength of these ideologies that systems of political economy have been built. Roselli explores the connections between theory and value judgements to identify the philosophical premises behind the economic reasoning of economists as diverse as Smith, Ricardo, Marx, Pareto, Keynes, Hayek, among others.

Liberalism originally leaned towards an unhindered laissez-faire, then towards a wider role of the State in the economic system, under the influence of socialist ideology, then again it has relied on an individualistic approach to issues of wealth production and distribution; more recently the unrealiability of this approach has been revealed by systemic crises, suggesting new reflections and uncertainties about the coherence of economic reasoning with the liberal idea: an institutional and historical perspective may open new spaces to the understanding of a liberal and capitalistic economy.

The vicissitudes of economic nationalism, its statist and protectionist features, its decline and recent resurgence are examined, being unclear what shape it is currently taking from an economic and political viewpoint. This is particularly obscure in the case of that specific form of nationalism called populism.

The decline and fall of Marx’s historical materialism cannot hide the inherent contrast of interest between the two sides of a labour contract. The lasting legacy of socialism is the enduring and multiform relevance – from a cowed labour force to environmental issues - of social themes in modern economies.

Liberalism, Nationalism, Socialism: Do They Still Matter?

Economic Philosophies

America’s most canceled intellectual presents a scorching defence of free thought and a devastating indictment of a left that has lost its way.
Norman Finkelstein made his name debunking Israel’s apologists and exposing the cynical weaponization of Jewish history. In this work, Finkelstein trains that same forensic eye on identity politics writ large.
After methodically parsing the canonical identity-politics texts, Finkelstein concludes that they’re lacking in intellectual substance. Instead, the real purpose of identity politics is to derail a class-based movement bent on radical change.
Finkelstein shows how the cult surrounding Barack Obama used identity politics to burnish a status quo president’s radical sheen. When a truly progressive movement cohered around presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, these “woke” liberals mobilised identity politics to discredit him.
Along the way, Finkelstein recalls his own life in radical politics and his close encounters with cancel culture, which left him unemployed and unemployable. He situates his personal story within broader debates on academic freedom and poignantly concludes that, although occasionally bitter, he harbors no regrets about the choices he made.
“If I can’t laugh, I don’t want your revolution,” Finkelstein declares. Laced with his signature wit, readers of this book will get to laugh along with him.
This revised edition of Finkelstein’s instant classic features a new chapter dissecting the Supreme Court's landmark decisions on affirmative action. In a bracingly original analysis, Finkelstein shows the stark limits of affirmative action discourse in the face of an economic system that is fundamentally rigged.
