Capital by Karl Marx is a foundational theoretical text in materialist philosophy, economics and politics. Commissioned by the Communist League and originally published in London just as the revolutions of 1848 began to erupt, the Manifesto was later recognised as one of the world's most influential political documents.&#13;Wage Labour and Capital is an essay on economics by Karl Marx, written in 1847 and first published in articles in the Neue Rheinische Zeitung in April 1849. This essay has been widely acclaimed as the precursor to Marx's important treatise Das Kapital.&#13;Value, Price and Profit was a speech given to the First International Working Men's Association in June in 1865 by Karl Marx. The central idea of the first approach is isonomy: the exclusion of any discrimination on the basis that legal rights are afforded equally to all people. The central idea of the second approach is rather to acknowledge and address a broader spectrum of known inequalities. Such an approach, Bellanca argues, allows the pursuit of pluralism as well as a more realistic and complex view of what equality is. In the contexts of legal interpretation and legal reasoning, the two most important intellectual tools employed by lawyers, &lt;i&gt;ratio&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;legis&lt;/i&gt; would seem to offer an extremely powerful argument. Declaring the &lt;i&gt;ratio&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;legis&lt;/i&gt; of a statute can lead to a u-turn argumentation throughout the lifespan of the statute itself – in parliament, or in practice during court sessions, when it is tested against the constitution.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Though the &lt;i&gt;ratio&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;legis&lt;/i&gt; argument is widely used, much about it warrants further investigation. On the general philosophical map there are many overlapping areas that concern different approaches to human rationality and to the problems of practical reasoning. Particular problems with &lt;i&gt;ratio&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;legis&lt;/i&gt; arise in connection with different perspectives on legal philosophy and theory, especially in terms of the methods that lawyers use for legal interpretation and argumentation. These problems can be further subdivided into particular aspects of activities undertaken by lawyers and officials who use the &lt;i&gt;ratio&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;legis&lt;/i&gt; in their work, and the underlying theories. In short, this book examines what &lt;i&gt;ratio&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;legis&lt;/i&gt; is, what it could be, and its practical implications.&lt;/p&gt;

The book’s central claim is that liberal institutions ultimately weaken their social groups in the evolutionary process of inter-group competition. In this sense, institutions relying on the liberal satisfaction of preferences reveal maladaptive tendencies. Based on the model of multilevel selection, this work appraises the capacity of liberal democracy and free markets to satisfy preferences. In particular, the book re-evaluates public choice theory’s classic postulate that free markets are a suitable alternative to the shortcomings of western liberal democracies regarding preference satisfaction. Yet, the book concludes that free markets are not a solution to the problems of liberal democracy because both market and democratic liberal institutions rest on the liberal satisfaction of preferences, an ethic which hurts group evolutionary fitness.
