Sakurai Y: Law, Autonomy, and
Vulnerability

Law, Autonomy, and Vulnerability

Supporting and Protecting Older Adults in Japan

With disruptive technologies on the horizon, traditional employment models are becoming outdated. How will your organization adapt to the evolving landscape of work?Business is on the cusp of a profound transformation. Conventional work models are failing to adapt to the evolving needs and expectations of the modern workforce. Simultaneously, the emergence of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, coupled with web3 innovations, including the metaverse and decentralized work models, is unlocking a new realm of possibilities. It raises the question: Is the era of traditional employment over? The tools of tomorrow will amplify human potential, from collaborating in virtual spaces through digital avatars, to managing transactions transparently on blockchain. Those who embrace these technologies--and the ways people want to work--will unleash unprecedented levels of productivity and innovation. But those who don't risk losing out on the best talent, and even becoming obsolete.Employment Is Dead ventures into unexplored territories to reveal how these innovations can transform work into more democratic, human-centric, and empowering work experiences. Deborah Perry Piscione and Josh Drean bring to life the seismic shifts occurring in the workforce, propelled by employees' growing demand for autonomy, flexibility, and a sense of purpose in their work. The authors challenge leaders to embrace these changes, offering vital insights into navigating this new landscape. With compelling case studies and cutting-edge examples, this book is an essential read for those aiming to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital environment and harnessing disruptive technologies to redefine the future of work.

"An indispensable handbook for living in the dark times. Study it, engage with it, and most of all, live by it" Nicholas Mirzoeff, author of To See In the Dark

"A combative book aimed at disarming societal violence while weaving new fabrics of life" Ana Esther CeceÒa, Institute for Economic Research, National Autonomous University of Mexico

"A collective ethnography, a workbook, and a toolkit for convivial research that makes us want to study assembly and create the councils of care" Gerald Raunig, Zurich University of the Arts

We are living through what the Zapatistas call the "Fourth World War"-a war waged by the forces of colonialism and racial patriarchal capitalism-that insists we forget our victories, relinquish our practices of care, and abandon our struggle. For communities targeted and ravaged by policing and militarization, safety is a paramount concern. But where do we turn? To the state, with its warped ideas of security and all its attendant violences?

Drawing on more than a decade of "convivial research and insurgent learning," alongside struggles across the San Francisco Bay Area, and in dialogue with struggles across the Global South, the authors argue for self-organized, locally rooted insurgent conviviality. This book aims to re-enchant the world through a focus on life; to share and generate tools, strategies, and theorizations that build from below in order to cross-pollinate struggles everywhere.

Manuel Callahan and Annie Paradise are part of the Center for Convivial Research and Autonomy (CCRA), a small transterritorial collective based in the San Francisco Bay Area. CCRA also facilitates Universidad de la Tierra, Califas.

A sweeping history of the rise of personal choice in the modern world and how it became equated with freedom

Choice touches virtually every aspect of our lives, from what to buy and where to live to whom to love, what profession to practice, and even what to believe. But the option to choose in such matters was not something we always possessed or even aspired to. At the same time, we have been warned by everybody from marketing gurus to psychologists about the negative consequences stemming from our current obsession with choice. It turns out that not only are we not very good at realizing our personal desires, we are also overwhelmed with too many possibilities and anxious about what best to select. There are social costs too. How did all this happen? The Age of Choice tells the long history of the invention of choice as the defining feature of modern freedom.

Taking readers from the seventeenth century to today, Sophia Rosenfeld describes how the early modern world witnessed the simultaneous rise of shopping as an activity and religious freedom as a matter of being able to pick one’s convictions. Similarly, she traces the history of choice in romantic life, politics, and the ideals of human rights. Throughout, she pays particular attention to the lives of women, those often with the fewest choices, who have frequently been the drivers of this change. She concludes with an exploration of how reproductive rights have become a symbolic flashpoint in our contemporary struggles over the association of liberty with choice.

Drawing on a wealth of sources ranging from novels and restaurant menus to the latest scientific findings about choice in psychology and economics, The Age of Choice urges us to rethink the meaning of choice and its promise and limitations in modern life.

'Glitters with menace' LUCY ROSE'Visceral and affecting' EMMA VAN STRAATEN'Hypnotic and deeply unsettling... both tender and terrifying'CELIA SILVANI'Utterly unique, experimental and, simultaneously, a page-turner with the sly, creeping pace of a horror film' HEATHER O'NEILLAn extraordinary literary horror debut from a rising star.My eyes snapped open and I saw something else in the mirror, something else that wasn't me...In the wake of an ill-omened romance with a horror cinephile, Brooke arrives in Vancouver to care for her sister, Izzy, who is facing reproductive surgery. But Izzy's rapidly decaying apartment building, its hallways stalked by an ominous crone known only as Medusa, offers little refuge to the sisters.Seeking solace in the films her ex-girlfriend loved, Brooke soon finds traces of horror bleeding from the screen into her life. Old wounds reopen and new frictions surface, and when Brooke begins to exhibit strange symptoms of her own, Izzy's concern spirals into obsession. The line between self and sister blurs until only one question remains: who, or what, will survive when all unravels?Through the dual lenses of art and horror cinema, Emma Cleary brilliantly dissects loneliness, motherhood and the body's threatened autonomy. Eerie and threaded with yearning, Our Monstrous Bodies is a haunting literary debut that blooms with the dark desires we suppress or to which we surrender.
